2006 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW California Coneheads (101-61, Ruth Division Winner) vs. San Diego Termites (90-72, RY Conference Wildcard) California reclaimed the division title this year after a 1-year absence from the playoffs. Carlos Lee and Barry Bonds provided the big bats in the middle of the order, each hitting over 30 home runs with 100+ runs and RBI. Victor Martinez had a stellar year at the plate, hitting .384 with a .453 on base average, .545 slugging average, and 106 runs scored. Much of the other spots in the lineup were platooned, which was pretty effective. The team scored over 930 runs and hit .283 as a team. Pitcher Brett Myers went 16-10 as a starter, and most of the other starters were done as a group effort. Closer Takashi Saito had an amazing year at closer, sporting a 1.25 ERA with 42 saves. San Diego makes its second straight appearance as the RY conferenced wildcard. The Termites were cruising along with Paul Konerko knocking in the runs, then traded him for a pitcher mid-season and Jason Giambi. The Konerko/Giambi mix produced 151 RBI and 47 home runs between them (but obviously Konerko isn't going to be playing for them in the post-season). Carlos Guillen hit .286 with 16 home runs, 101 runs scored and 100 RBI from the shortstop position. Chris Carpenter had an ace season, going 18-7 with a 3.58 ERA. Jarrod Wasburn went 14-8 with a 3.84 ERA, and Barry Zito won 16. Acquisition Jake Westbrook finished 8-5 in 16 starts. Closing duties were spread out amongst many relievers (10 different relievers got at least one save). But in the playoffs, closer duties will be more than adequately handed by former Conehead closer Mariano Rivera, who was acquired during the season. In 13 regular season contests, California won the season series 7 games to 5. California has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Termites (Carpenter) at Coneheads (Myers). This one went back and forth throughout the game. Hank Blalock would hit a sacrifice fly in the 2nd. Jose Valentin would respond with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning. By the 4th inning it was tied 2-all, by the 6th it was tied 3-all, and by the top of the 9th it was tied 5-all. Conehead closer Takashi Saito retired the batters in order in the top of the 9th, and Termites closer Mariano Rivera held the Coneheads to a single walk in a scoreless bottom of the 9th. In the bottom of the 10th, with 2 outs and nobody on, Jim Edmonds singled. Jose Valentin proved to be the hero of the day, hitting a game winning RBI triple to off Rivera to drive in Edmonds. California wins game 1 in extra innings by a score of 6 to 5.
