This metagallery of imagery,
web links and resources is devoted to contemporary marvelous art. Some
related books and video are at the Surreal World
Bookstore.
The incredible Alex Grey.
Click the picture [copyright Alex Grey] to visit
a gallery of his work with a very short, clinical/anti-clinical auto-bio.
His wife Allyson also does interesting paintings,
a small gallery of them here.
Both these galleries are hosted by the interesting AfterNoon
site.

The astounding Allen Toney, upon whose armature
the clay of photographs at last becomes prehensile.
Click the picture [copyright Allen Toney] to
visit his galleries. The iris prints of his images, for sale there, must
be fantastic - I'd love to see these images in proper detail. Appallingly,
no books of his work seem to exist!
Also recommended are his extraordinary pages
at
the threshhold of anxious dreams.
The mind-boggling H. R. Giger.
Click on the picture [or its outline] [copyright
HRGiger] - to go to one of his official sites, where you can
get prints, originals, and books. The galleries associated are even more
extraordinary for the wonderful images by other artists, many of whom I
am otherwise a stranger to.Giger's official online galleries are very limited
and a better idea of his work can probably be gotten from some of the unofficial
galleries of his work posted by admirers, but his oversize books provide
the finer resolution his detailed canvases deserve. You can buy the following
books by clicking on the titles: Necromonicon,
the sequel Necromonicon
II, and Biomechanics
are all marvelous, in the way nightmares can be marvelous. The machine
gods are apparently not very wholesome.
De Es has a small gallery you can link to by clicking the picture [copyright
De Es] . You can buy his book Heavy Light from his publisher Morpheus
International's site, which has other galleries and info of interest,
or by clicking
here
Click on the picture [copyright Bob Venosa] to
go to Robert Venosa's site, where you can view some galleries or purchase
limited edition prints, posters, etc. Here perhaps even more than is usually
the case, however, the low res online images fail to more than hint at
the beauty of work whose power derives in part from its detail . Much higher
resolution images are available in his books, unfortunately apparently
out of print.
J. K. Potter is another, like Allen Toney, who subverts photographs,
discarding their superficial objectivity like bloody wrapping paper . To
visit an online gallery, click the picture [copyright
J. K. Potter] .Other online galleries are hereand
here.
To buy his book click here.
Click on the above image [copyright MkdzK]
to visit MkdzK, an extraordinary and beautifully designed site I've followed
through many transformations over the years. The artist is very prolific
and the enormous site changes frequently. I'm unaware of any print versions.
A personal favorite [with Allen Toney's site] of truly html art.

Click on the picture [copyright Nick Hyde] to
go to Nick Hyde's site,
where you can buy originals and prints, get info, and view galleries [Nick
Hyde is another painter of fine detail and the gallery images on his site
don't give much a full idea of their extraordinary beauty].

to
visit Christophe Vacher's site with a nice gallery, bio and exhibition
info, etc. Mr. Vacher has some work for sale through the Giger
site above.
The mysterious and astounding Vonn Stropp is hard to see. A few images
are scattered around on old magazines like Raw Visions and Art Alternatives
[or was it Juxtapoz,
the Robert Williams-associated magazine?] and at Henry
Boxer's gallery, through whom one can purchase Vonn Stropp and other
extraordinary originals. A few of his works are included in the very interesting
anthology, many of its artists seemingly Art Brut [see the Derangement
of the Senses gallery], "The End Is Near!".
The bookseller has up an excellent gallery of work from it from a lot
of the artists; you can visit it by clicking on the picture [copyright
Vonn Stropp] [7/21/00 The Gallery page seems to be down]. The book
can be purchased through that site or by clicking here.
Click the picture [copyright XNO] to go
to where Bess Cutler has posted a small gallery of possible eidetic imagery
by XNO and where you can buy posters and photos by other artists as well
as XNO.
Click the picture [copyright Mark Ryden]
to go to Mark Ryden's galleries. You can buy prints and other merchandise
and get info at his site.
Click the image to go to Wr-eye-tings Scratchpad, with links to concrete
and visual web poetry including java and flash implementations.
Click the logo to visit the KCRW page of Joe Frank, many of whose brilliant
radio shows are available on streaming audio and audio cd.
Other artists I'd like to include, but who seem to lack both books in
print and decent web galleries, include Ernst Fuchs, M. C. Escher, Mati
Klarwein, Arnulf Rainer, Mark Beyer, Georganne Deen, Rich Rethorn, Mad
Geoerge,and Paul
Laffoley. [Well, Paul Laffoley does have some nice images at the same
"The End Is Near!" site]. Coming: Ralph Steadman's polaroid work, Todd
Schorr, Joe Coleman, Robert Williams.
This gallery is still under construction.
