This page is devoted to cellular automata, genetic algorithms,
and Alife. These images typically were derived from previous images [or
sometimes each horizontal line is derived from the one preceding it], to
every pixel of which an algorithmic set of rules was applied. They can
be thought of as snapshots, part of a sequence, as opposed to the fractals
of page 1, which are more like graphs. Therefore Alife lends
itself more naturally to animation than do fractals [which rely on color
cycling and sometimes zooming for animation], and to fully appreciate them
make sure to visit the realtime applets or better yet download some programs
and make them yourself. Other cyberdelia pages at the Surrealism Test Center
are:

Some related books, video, music and software are at the Surreal

. Click the picture to visit the Artificial
Painter GalleriesYou can also learn about Artificial Painter, and there
is an online interactive demo and movies.
Click the picture to go to the site of the amazing Rudy Rucker. This
one's not to be missed as it's full of excellent downloadable free software,
especially the wonderful Capow, and Cellab [with John Walker]. There are
galleries associated with the sections for different software. Mr. Rucker
is also an interesting writer.
Scott Draves, also a very interesting programmer of fractal programs
[http://draves.org/art.html],
is here represented by his fine free downloadable alife program, Bomb.
Click the picture to go to to his index page, from which you can download
the program, view several galleries of screenshots, and access lots of
info and links.
Click the picture to go to David Griffeath's excellent site. There
are many links
to downloadable programs and others
to view online in realtime, as well as his intersting galleries
and more.
Click the picture to visit a page with mpg's of cellular automata in
action. Other connected pages have other kinds of mathematical visualizations
and animations.
Ants
Screen Saver site has some interesting caps from a screensaver he wrote
Click the picture to visit the Temple of Alife, where you can see several
interesting applets actually run in realtime
W.B. Langdon has a realtime applet up of Conway's
life in Java. Another online cellular automata program is Cellsprings.
And mouseDown
has
some shockwave alife [?] examples online.
Dave Sag [who's also mentioned in the algorithmic music section] has
a strange and interesting [but very resource-intensive on my computer]
alife java applet, March of the Photobots, in which the alife seem to swarm
over and decompose pictures. Click the image to go there [to activate the
alife, click one of the pics at the bottom of his page].
Avida is
a freeware artificial life program downloadable from Digital Life Lab's
site.
Here's lots of downloadable programs: Topic:

Boids
(Flocks, Herds, and Schools: a Distributed Behavioral Model) has a
nice realtime applet demonstrating flocking behavior, and lots of related
info and links including to downloadable programs.. - -A couple more configurable
online java flocking applets are the interesting Floys
Martin
Reddy's Swarm Paint is an interesting realtime applet which generates
graphics through swarming behavior.
Click here to go to a fine resource with lots of info and also downloadable
programs. A more complete list of downloadable software from their old
site is still up at http://alife.santafe.edu/alife/topics/cas/ca-faq/soft/soft.html
John Mount's [?]International
Interactive Genetic Art is down as is the RndPic site. If you know
where these sites have moved please email
me.
Mark
Smucker's Evolutionary Computation and Artificial Life Page
This is a large links page mostly to info rather than graphics. It
doesn't seem to have been updated since '96 and many of its links are dead
but it still has stuff of interest.
Most [and best] free algorithmic software is for pc, but here's a page
with lots of Mac Alife software for download.
Where possible each image in the galleries links to the artist's web
site [which hosts the image] and within which may be found online galleries
to the artist's work and if available access to purchase of original art,
high quality prints, books, software, and/or information .If links to direct
purchase of books by the artist are indicated on my page they are through
amazon.com online. If I can't locate an appropriate official web site to
link to/with, I represent the artist with a low-res scan or image
of the book cover. The image copyrights are retained by their creators
and publishers and are included here in "fair use" as part of the original
review pages published by the Surreal World Metagalleries. Galleries
are permanently under construction. Publishers or authors interested in
having items considered for listing may send a review copy to:
