This website contains the lyrics for some of the recordings of Taisiya Povaliy. It contains the original Russian or Ukrainian lyrics plus the English translations and transliterations and it also contains a link to the videos or audio files. Most of the videos are from YouTube but some are from other sources on the web.

The main purpose of this site is to provide transliterations so an English speaker can follow the text of the lyrics at the same time as listening to the vocals, or watching the videos.

For an English speaker, the transliteration is a big help, it allows one to follow along and distinguish words and syllables that someone not fluent in Russian or Ukrainian would otherwise have a hard time hearing.

The Ukrainian or Russian text and translations and transliterations are provided together, in columns, line by line, so the listener can hear the vocal and have all the text available at the same time.

Most of the English translations are from GOOGLE TRANSLATE but some are from other online translators. Generally Google seems to do a word by word translation from Russian or Ukrainian to English and doesn't display much understanding of whole phrases or sentences so the translations don't always convey the intention of the original Russian or Ukrainian. Human translations would be better, but there are not too many of those available on the Web. Sometimes I'll take the results of several online translators and combine them into something that I think makes more sense than the machine translation. If you have suggestions for improvements to the translations you can email them to TpovaliyLyrics at DriveHQ.com

The transliterations are also from Google Translate, but word for word transliterations seem to be almost one hundred percent accurate as far as sound of the words and syllables. Of course they still do not show the accent on syllables, and accents are essential in Slavic languages. There is a program called VymovaPro that can translate Ukrainian. It provides translations, transliterations and voice synthesis, and it also shows accents. I should eventually use the transliterations with accents from VymovaPro instead of from Google Translate.

I have all of the videos downloaded to my desktop computer and I play them with Windows Media Player. Then I can reduce the screen size of the player so I can view this site and the player at the same time. If you just play the videos from YouTube and want to see the transliterations from this site at the same time you will have to play the video in one instance of your browser and this site in another instance of your browser, then reduce the size of each browser window so you can see both browser windows on your monitor screen at the same time.

By creating this website, and thereby helping English speakers understand the Russian or Ukrainian lyrics, I hope to make the beauty of Taisiya Povaliy's singing, at least a little more available to the English speaking world.
