What? No pictures? Sorry - no. The thumbnail on the previous page was taken from the internet because my identification of the Marbled White in mid-June 2026 can only be deemed "probable" as, although it flew around the meadow (and me!) for quite some time, it didn't actually land and so I was unable to observe it at rest. However, in the several brief moments when it came close to me I clearly saw a black & white chequerboard pattern on its upper wing, and the underside was definitely slightly grey as it flew around. This alone would tend to differentiate a Marbled While from a Large White (which has an almost entirely white or slightly yellow underwing) even if a quick look at the dark upper wing markings of a female Large White might see them as chequerboard-like.
Despite the above, I was initially doubtful about the identification as the range of the Marbled White as given in my butterfly book did not include Suffolk. However, this is some years old now and the distribution map for 2019-2023 on the Suffolk Butterflies website does indicate a number of sightings close to my area. I am thus reasonably happy that it was at least possible for one to come my way. I am therefore giving it a tick, if maybe only a small one!
