1932 Duesenberg Model J Boattail Roadster by Murphy

return to U.S.A. Miscellaneous Menu

One of my favorite cars, the Monogram diecast/plastic kit of a Duesenberg Model J Boattail Roadster.
After some research I found out that is was a 1932 model with a body by Murphy. And ofcourse I changed a few things.
The chrome strips on the front of the rear fenders were molded in the diecast. Instead of painting them silver, an option I really didn't like, I removed them and replaced them with self adhesive chrome strips. Much better!
The two spare wheels had originally chrome plated covers, but I decided to go for the non-chrome version. Obviously with that option I needed two more black vinyl tires and two sets of chrome wheels. But with two Duesenberg scrap kits in the parts box I had all the parts I needed. The rear view mirrors had to be mounted on the chrome covers, but without these covers I had to make a ground plate for the mirrors so they could be fixed on top of the spare tires. A small paper strip, painted brown to simulate leather was used to mount the mirrors on the tires. Exactly like the original mirrors. And that's about it.
Oh, and I changed the proposed paint scheme. The top of the body is painted black, but it was suggested to polish it. Nice idea, but the metal had several flaws in it. Besides that, I didn't like the polished look.

And while I was busy building the Duesie I also managed to save a complete chassis including engine from the two scrap Duesenberg kits. I even got a third engine together from the remaining parts.

The engine has a lot of polished aluminium parts and instead of trying to brush paint them with a silver paint, which doesn't look very realistic, I decided to spray the whole engine with Tamiya TS83 Metallic Silver. After that I brush painted the necessary paints with Humbrol enamel paint #61. A painstaking and time consuming job and I had to do that for three engines! But I do like the result.
