Persistent and repeated recent news reports describe the health effects
of alcohol taken in moderation, but consistently fail to note that another
of alcohol's well-established properties is an addictive quality, known
to be responsible for tens of thousands of deaths and untold social problems
annually, so that were that segment of the population not already drinking
in moderation to attempt it, far more negative than positive effects on
the populace as a whole could be expected. One awaits similarly balanced
reports on the benefits - unexplored but possibly real - of cocaine or
heroin, used in moderation - of tobacco, of glue-sniffing - and of the
social benefits, undoubtedly real in special cases, of prostitution, theft,
and murder.
