Water Voles

Although water voles are not uncommon in the waterways of England they are under serious threat due to habitat loss and disturbance. We were thus very happy to find they had colonised our pond once it became established.
We suspected they might be about because we had seen foliage cut at a distinctive 45degree angle and holes in the bank which we assumed might be burrows. This was soon confirmed when they were seen swimming about - great to watch when drinking afternoon tea!
Unfortunately, one of the major sources of habitat disturbance is cats, of which there are many in our location (and we must plead guilty ourselves, currently having three!). This, and the unpredictability of the water-level in the pond, is probably the reason why we have not seen water voles for some years now.
