| This immediately recognisable butterfly should technically be called the Small Tortoiseshell, as there is also a "Large" - or rather there was, as it is now thought to be extinct. Its black caterpillars congregate within very distinctive webs on nettles. The sexes are similar |
Hopefully this pair can tell the difference between male and female though! |

The underwing is mainly dark, but with a very distinctive fawn marking on the fore-wing |
The pattern around the fawn patch mimics that of the overwing, as can be seen when both are visible |
