Butterfly Name

Tortoiseshell
(Aglais urticae)

This immediately recognisable butterfly should technically be called the Small Tortoiseshell, as there is also a "Large" - or rather there was, as it is now thought to be extinct. Its black caterpillars congregate within very distinctive webs on nettles. The sexes are similar

Hopefully this pair can tell the difference between male and female though!

The underwing is mainly dark, but with a very distinctive fawn marking on the fore-wing

The pattern around the fawn patch mimics that of the overwing, as can be seen when both are visible
