The sexes are similar, though the white markings round the wing spots are larger on a female than on a male. The example on the left is therefore a male, while that on the right is a female

The underwing pattern shows the same differentiation - this is a male, therefore

And here we have a female. Note in particular the much more distinct spots on the hind-wing

We are all encouraged to smile when having our picture taken, but I didn't realise it applied to butterflies as wel!
