The Small Skipper is distinguished from the Large Skipper by the fact that it is smaller (strangely enough!) and lacks the brown wing-markings. The male still sports sex brands though, as here

With no sex brand, the upper wings of the female Small Skipper are almost entirely plain, with just a slight veining visible

The underwing is also plain (in both sexes), but the lower wing is noticeably buff-coloured rather than orange

As with the Large Skipper, the wings are usually held in this angled manner

The Small Skipper is distinguished from the Essex Skipper by the fact that the underside of the tips of its antennae is orange rather than black - not easy to see at a casual glance but clear in these head-on views

Mating pairs - female to the right in the first image, more clearly to upper left in the second

Another pair on a different occasion, clearly showing the orange antenna tips characteristic of a Small Skipper
