Both sexes could be confused with a male Meadow Brown but the multiple circular markings, especially on the female (to the right here), are the distinguishing feature. The white wing-border is also much more pronounced, particularly when in flight. The wing markings on the male are less prominent than on the female, often with fewer "roundels"

The underwing has the very distinctive "targets" which give the Ringlet its name. The brown colour also means that there is no orange visible when it is in flight - another feature which distinguishes the Ringlet from the Meadow Brown.

The underwing patterning is very variable however - here is a particularly distinctive striped variant

And a very pale one - a female

Seems to be equally attractive though, as here we have a "pale" mating pair - male above, female below
