| The male is easily distinguished from the female by the dark markings on its forewings. Note the distinctive "double-dotted" spots - these are characteristic of a Gatekeeper | The female has some resemblance to a female Meadow Brown, but is distinguished by the orange colour on the hindwings and, of course, by the double dots | The underwing is almost identical to that of the Meadow Brown but, once again, the double dots provide the clue, together with the white dots which Meadow Browns lack |
