The male is easily distinguished from the female by the dark markings on its forewings. Note the distinctive "double-dotted" spots - these are characteristic of a Gatekeeper

The female has some resemblance to a female Meadow Brown, but is distinguished by the orange colour on the hindwings and, of course, by the double dots

The underwing is almost identical to that of the Meadow Brown but, once again, the double dots provide the clue, together with the white dots which Meadow Browns lack
