1925 Hanomag

return to German Cars Menu

A couple of old kits from East-Germany,  three 1925 Hanomag cars. I purchased these kits some time ago on the German Ebay site. The kits are from MK Modelle (MK=Max Kratzer) and were manufactured in the seventies by VEB Modell-Konstrukt, Leipzig. VEB stands for Volkseigener Betrieb (in English: Publicly Owned Operation). These were often former private companies in the Soviet occupation zone in 1945 in Germany, the part what in 1949 became the DDR ( German Democratic Republic).

The kits are very basic and made from some strange kind of plastic. The normal automotive grey primer caused some strange effects, but luckily I could use the Tamiya paint, sprayed directly on the plastic without any primer.

The Hanomags were simple cars, with only two seats and a small 750 CC engine.

All three kits, the cabriolet, limousine and delivery, used the same basic body, with extra parts for building the limousine and delivery.

The kits were not that bad, a much better design than that of the Dixi. The Hanomag kits even had an engine bay, but the total amount of parts in that bay was two: one for the engine and one for the radiator. No too much detail.

The basic body for all three cars went together with only a few problems. The fitting of the four separate fenders was a bit of a hassle.

The dashboards of all three cars were build alike and received some extra details:

The limousine (what's in a name...) had some extra problems. One part was missing (from what I understood that was almost normal with that kit) and the limousine door was much, much too small. I still don't understand why nobody fixed it, the door missed almost 4 millimeters at the bottom and 2 millimeters in width.

Some glass was provided with the kit for the windshield, but that was also way too small. I don't know who designed the mold for the glass, but he had definitely a bad day.

And this is how a 1925 Hanomag Limousine looks like:

The delivery version of the Hanomag had similar problems as the limousine. The glass provided for the windscreen was also too small. The two rear doors for the delivery section were also too small and had the wrong shape at the top. The mold for those parts was probably made by the same man who made the molds for the windshield glass…  I ended up scratchbuilding two new doors.

The delivery section also missed the support brackets on the underside. Lucky for me I had enough reference material so that problem was solved quickly.

The logo and lettering on the delivery box is the original as used by that company in the twenties.

The result:

The basic version of the kit, the cabriolet, had no extra parts, so no one could screw these up like they did with the extra parts for the delivery or limousine version! Ofcourse I had to replace the glass provided for the windscreen. The rest of the kit was more or less routine.
