New Year's Day Polar Bear Plungers Race Into Evergreen Lake Jan. 1, 2008 - Evergreen, CO

Although water temperatures were barely above freezing, more than seventy brave participants took the plunge on a beautiful New Year's day. This event is a fund raiser for Drive Smart Evergreen/Conifer and the Evergreen Parks and Recreation District Special Needs Program. Participants purchased a $25 ticket in order to take a dip. Others wanting to donate but not willing to take the plunge themselves were able to bid against each other to see how much could be raised in order to watch a few Evergreenites being pushed in. Jefferson County Sheriff personnel and Evergreen Fire and Rescue volunteers were on hand to supervise. Drive Smart's Executive Director, Jackie Mohr, said, "We have raised over $5000 in donations with still more expected to come in!" Drive Smart hosts the New Year's Eve Skate the Lake winter festival as well as the Polar Plunge as it's main source of revenue for the year.
