1999 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW Oregon Wet Sox (93-69) vs. Cincinnati Rock (97-65) The Wet Sox are no strangers to winning, having appeared in the last two world series. The core of the team, SS Nomar Garciaparra, 1B Jeff Bagwell and OF Larry Walker led the team to a league wildcard spot. Garciaparra was the MVP of the team, hitting .358 with 46 doubles, 41 homers, and 144 RBI. OF Larry Walker had 39 homers and 117 runs scored, while Bagwell scored triple digits in runs and RBI. CF Andruw Jones contines to improve, hitting 30 homers and scoring 100 runs. The Wet Sox have boasted the fire man of the year for two years running, and this year should be no different. All-star Roberto Hernandez led the league in saves with 39 and had a miniscule 1.69 ERA and 12 wins to boot. Mike Mussina and Sterling Hitchcock were a more-than-competant starting pitching duo, combining for 29 wins with ERA's in the mid 3's. Rolando Arrojo was 13-8 with a 4.31 ERA. The Rock were expected to contend this year, but they did far more than that, holding the best record in the league for the first part of the season before capturing the Koufax division pennant. Their pennant drive was rather thrilling, going on a 12-game losing streak and briefly losing the pennant lead before recovering. 3B Troy Glaus had his breakout year, hitting 40 homers with 101 runs scored and 110 RBI, and should be a star for years to come. JT Snow put up a good year, slugging .525 with 25 homers and scoring 90 runs. IF Tony Fernandez, OF Carlos Beltran and OF Brady Anderson were also members of the 90 run club. While the offense consists of highly competant hitters, the pitching boasts some fierce pitchers. in Kevin Millwood, Bartolo Colon and Scott Williamson. Colon and Millwood were very dominant in the early part of the season, being named the #1 and #2 starts for MK conference in the all-star game, while Scott Williamson was the #2 reliever for the MK conference ... behind Wet Sox reliever Roberto Hernandez. Andy Ashby was the other starting pitching workhorse, pitching 200+ innings with a 12-11 record (which is quite alright when Kevin Millwood goes 20-7!). The teams split their season series 6-6. Cincinnati has home field advantage. ****************************************************************** GAME ONE -- Wet Sox (Mussina) at Rock (Millwood) The first game between the Koufax division teams. The Wet Sox got to Millwood early, when in the 2nd Andruw Jones hit an RBI single, scoring Jeff Bagwell. Jones would eventually score in the inning on a Mike Mussina single. The Rock made it a 2-1 game in the 4th when Paul O'Neal drove in Brady Anderson. Rock reliever Scott Williamson helped himself out in the run support department in the 7th, hitting a 2 out single to score Pokey Reese at 2nd and tie up the game up at 2 all. But alas, Williamson gave up a gopher ball to Larry Walker in the 8th to make it a 3-2 Wet Sox ballgame. The Rock would have to try and win the game in the bottom of the 9th, and they would have to do it facing closer Roberto Hernandez. Paul O'Neill started things off for the Rock with a single, and was replaced by pinch runner Carlos Febles. John Flaherty sacrifices Febles over to 2nd, and Reese sacrifices Febles over to 3rd for 2 outs and a runner on 3rd. All the Rock needs is 1 run to tie the game. Up to the plate was pinch runner Mark Quinn. Quinn walked to put runners at 1st & 3rd. Up next was infielder Tony Fernandez. Would Fernandez be able to get the clutch hit, scoring 1, maybe even 2 runs? Nope. Fernandez struck out, ending the game. Oregon wins game 1 by a score of 3-2. WET SOX LEAD 1-0. Just ask the Cincinnati Rock. The Wet Sox scored a run in the 1st inning, but the Rock came right back and loaded the bases in the bottom of the 1st. Platoonie Juan Encarnacion hit a 2 RBI single, and Tony Fernandez hit a 2 RBI double for the 4-1 lead after 1 inning. The Wet Sox scored again in the 4th on a Nomar Garciaparra sacrifice fly (Larry Walker scored both Wet Sox runs). In the 5th, Pokey Reese walked, stole second, and scored on platoonie Terry Shumpert's single. Mike Stanley drove Shumpert in with a single for a 6-2 game. The Rock found themselves in a bit of trouble in the top of the 8th, when Scott Williamson faced a bases loaded situation with Dante Bichette at bat, but Bichette poped out to Tony Fernandez, ending the inning. Armando Benitez got 3 easy outs in the 9th to seal the game for the Rock. Cincinnati wins game two by a score of 6-2, and tie up the series. SERIES TIED 1-1. For two teams, their season has boiled down to one game. The winner moves on to the conference finals, and the loser just moves on. The Wet Sox scored first in the 1st when Jeff Bagwell doubled in Larry Walker. The Rock tied it up in the 3rd on team effort. Pokey Reese singled, moved to 2nd on Andy Ashby's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Tony Fernandez's single. 1-1. In the 5th, Andruw Jones doubled, and scored on Dante Bichette's single. Bichette eventually wound up at 3rd base and scored on Michael Barrett's single. 3-1 Wet Sox. In the 7th inning, the Rock made some noise. Still against Aaron Sele, with Paul O'Neill at first base, John Flaherty smacked the ball out of the park. 2 run homer, the game was tied at 3, and Sele was done for the game. We move now to the bottom of the 8th, still tied 3-3. Closer-supreme Roberto Hernandez is on the mound for the Wet Sox. First batter up was Tony Fernandez, who walked. Tony Gwynn was next, and singled. The next batter was Brady Anderson. Anderson hits a grounder just past Jeff Bagwell, which lets Fernandez score from 2nd and moves Gwynn to 3rd. This was Hernandez's first run allowed in the post-season. 4-3 Rock. JT Snow singles to drive in Gwynn. 5-3 Rock. In the top of the 9th, Armando Benitez came on board to close it out. The Rock were just 3 outs away from advancing to the MK conference finals, but they'd have to do it against Oregon's heart of the order. First batter up was Larry Walker. But Walker couldn't do anything, grounding out for out #1. Up next was Jeff Bagwell, who flied out. Out #2. 1 more out, and the Rock would have to do it vs. Nomar Garciaparra. So would Garciaparra save the day? Not this day. Garciaparra strikes out, and the Rock win game seven by the score of 5-3. Cincinnati advances to the MK conference finals, where they will face the Reservoir Dogs. ROCK WINS 4-3.
