1999 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW Ruth/Young Conference Finals California Coneheads (4-3 over Fish) vs. Road Warriors (4-3 over Thunder) A matchup between two teams who actually have quite a bit of history together. The Coneheads have been the most dominant team in CFOD history, winning their division every year except for one. Only in recent years has California seen heavy competition in their division, and that's mainly due to the Road Warriors (1st year under their new name). The two teams battled in the regular season in '96, but were both upset in the playoffs. In '97 the two met in an epic confrontation, which saw the then-named Whaleheads triumph over the Coneheads on their way to the 1997 CFOD championship. Last year the Whaleheads failed to make the playoffs and had an overhaul in the front office, while the Coneheads went on to win the 1998 CFOD championship. The Road Warriors have scored the most runs in the playoffs so far with 36. Ken Griffey Jr, OF Brian Giles and 1B Carlos Delgado have been the best all-around sluggers so far, each averaging around 6 runs and 6 RBI. 2B Jose Offerman has 5 runs scored with a .406 on base average. 3B Fernando Tatis has a poor .200 batting average, but does boast 5 runs scored. On the pitching side of things, starter Chuck Finley has had a frustrating playoff experience. Despite throwing 16 innings (9 of those from a complete game) and an ERA of 3.38, the hurler has an 0-2 record. Jose Rosado has a 3.37 ERA in 2 starts but is 0-1. If the law of averages holds, these guys will be making a major comeback. The Coneheads have not been playing up to the best of their abilities so far in the playoffs, and actually had to pull a few rabbits out of their hat (Shannon Stewart's last AB in game six, anyone?) to defeat the wildcard Fish in 7 games. Preston Wilson is the team leader in RBI with 5, despite having only 11 at bats. 2B Ray Durham his hitting .346 with 5 runs scored, while Mike Piazza is slugging .480. The rest of the team isn't doing so hot, which explains the .220 team average through 7 games. What is working for California is their pitching. Their 1.60 team playoff ERA is the best of the playoff teams. The worst ERA among starters is ace Randy Johnson, who is pitching at a 2.45 ERA clip (yet is 0-2). Omar Daal has a 2.13 ERA in 12 2/3rds innings and Tim Hudson has a miniscule 0.64 ERA, with just 1 earned run in 14 innings pitched. The Coneheads and Warriors battled to a 6-6 draw in the regular season, and the Coneheads have home field advantage. ****************************************************************** GAME ONE -- Warriors (Finley) at Coneheads (Johnson) The aces on both teams held the hitters at bay for the early innings. The first hit came in the 3rd, when Jose Offerman doubled (but did not score). The first runs of the game were in the bottom of the 5th inning. With 1 out and the bases loaded, Shannon Stewart singled, scoring 2 runs. Randy Johnson tried to score as well, but was thrown out at home. The next batter, Preston Wilson, made sure that Stewart wouldn't have to run too hard, as he cranked the ball over the wall. 2-run homer, and the Coneheads were up 4-0 in the 5th. In the 6th inning, Troy O'Leary hit a solo shot for a 4-1 game. In the top of the 9th, Johnson was still on the mound for California. The first batter of the inning, Carlos Delgado, singled. Johnson then got 2 quick pop outs for 2 outs. The next batter, Jacob Cruz, got plunked. 2 on, 2 out. Johnson was done, and reliever Keith Foulke came on board to face Difelice. Difelice didn't acomplish anything, poping out to end the game. California wins game 1 by a score of 4-1. CONEHEADS LEAD 1-0. The Warriors found themselves in a prime scoring opportunity in the 4th, when Tim Hudson walked the bases full with 1 out, but got Paul Bako to hit into a double play to end the inning without any runs scored. Still 1-0 Coneheads. In the 6th, Cristian Guzman singled, scoring Juan Gonzalez from 2nd (Juan's first run of the post-season, believe it or not). 2-0 California. In the 7th, Juan Gonzalez gets his first two RBI of the postseason with a 2-RBI single. 4-0 California. The Warriors started their comeback in the 8th inning. Ken Griffey Jr hit a solo shot off of reliever Keith Foulke, who was immediately replaced by Mariano Rivera. But it didn't seem to help as Carlos Delgado smacked the back-to-back homer for a 4-2 California game. Rivera started out the 9th inning on the mound for California, and gave up a leadoff single to Alex Rodriguez. The next batter, Troy O'Leary, nearly hit into a double play, but managed to reach first in time. Orlando Merced sacrificed O'Leary over to 2nd. 2 outs, runner on 2nd. Up next was Mike Difelice, who once again was the last possible out. The fates must be feeling cruel to Difelice, because he couldn't get anything done for the 2nd straight game. Difelice grounds out, ending the game and giving California the 4-2 victory. CALIFORNIA LEADS 2-0. But the Warriors struck back in the 2nd. With runners on 1st & 3rd, Griffey singled to right field, scoring Giles. Rodriguez ran past second base on his way to 3rd. Gonzalez tried to throw Rodriguez out at third, but the ball sails over Koskie's head, allowing Rodriguez to score from 3rd and make it a 2-1 Warriors ballgame. The Coneheads wouldn't let the Warrior lead last, though. In the 4th, Mike Piazza hit a solo shot to tie it up at 2. In the 3rd, Koskie hit a bases loaded 2 RBI double for a 4-2 game. The Coneheads never looked back. California scored 3 more runs in the latter innings to put them up 7-2 by the bottom of the 9th. The Warriors never recovered. California wins game three by a score of 7-2, and are only 1 game away from going to the 1999 CFOD World Series. CONEHEADS lead 3-0.
