1999 CFOD PLAYOFFS PREVIEW Round 1 - Sacramento Fish (89-73) at California Coneheads (102-60) The perennial champion vs. the young'un upstarts. After a few years of getting knocked out in the playoffs, California came back with a vengence in '98, clinching another title. In '99 the Coneheads are back on top, clinching their 8th division pennant and are gunning for their 6th CFOD championship. Pre-season acquisition Randy Johnson lived up to expectations, posting a tiny 2.77 ERA with 15 wins and 333 strikesouts. Rookie Tim Hudson was a model of efficiency, going 16-1 in just 24 starts. Closer Mariano Rivera was dominant once again, saving 37 games and posting a 1.69 ERA. Craig Biggio wasn't missed all that much, as 2B Ray Durham scored 131 runs and stole 41 bases. Juan Gonzalez and Mike Piazza were the big bats in the middle of the lineup, each hitting an average of 45 homers and driving in 140 runs. Frank Thomas overcame a brief slump to put up a decent year, hitting .330 woth 102 runs scored, and OF Shannon Stewart scored 100 runs while stealing 33 bases. Piazza, Durham, Johnson and Rivera made the all star team. For the Fish, it's been a long time coming. They last made the playoffs under a different name in '91, when they were led by (even then) oldster Nolan Ryan. For the past several seasons, the Fish have been on a major youth movement, (average age on the '99 roster: 25.7 years). This year it's paid off, resulting in a trip to the playoffs. The big star of this team is Vladimir Guerrero, who should be an all-star for years to come. Guerrero notched 40 homers, 125 runs scored and 147 runs driven in. Paul Konerko slugged .536 with 90 runs scored and 96 RBI. Adrian Beltre drove in 95, and OF Ben Grieve scored 93 runs while slugging .514. The pitching staff is anchored by about the only two veterans on the team, John Smoltz and David Cone (and they were acquired mid-season). Smoltz is the team ace, who went a combined 14-9 and had a 3.43 ERA with the Fish. Cone went 5-3 in 13 starts for the Fish with a 5-3 record. Eric Milton was with the team all season, and pitched pretty well, going 13-9 with a 3.39 ERA. There wasn't much of a bullpen this year, with the closer for the first part of the season being young phenom Rick Ankiel with a 6-2 record and 13 saves. Guerrero and Milton made the all-star team this year. The Coneheads won the season series 5-4, and have home field advantage. ****************************************************************** GAME ONE -- Fish (Smoltz) at Coneheads (Johnson) Battle of the staff aces. Bruce Aven tagged Randy Johnson early, hitting a solo homer in the 1st. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Conehead machine went into gear, as Ray Durham hit a 2-RBI triple against John Smoltz, and later scored on a Frank Thomas RBI single. 3-1 Coneheads. But the Fish (and Bruce Aven) were not done yet. In the 6th, Aven proves to be Mr. Clutch, cranking a 3-run homer against Johnson. Johnson stymied most of the Fish, K'ing 10 of them, but Aven just had his number. The Fish buckled down for the rest of the game. Guillermo Mota got pinch hitter Mark Sweeney to hit into a double play to end the game. Bruce Aven is the hero for the Fish, who take home field advantage away from the Coneheads in the 4-3 squeaker. After losing game one, the Coneheads were looking for revenge. In the bottom of the 3rd, with 2 outs and the bases loaded, Frank Thomas hit a 2-RBI single for the 2-0 lead. In the next inning, Preston Wilson cranked out a 2-run dinger for the 4-0 Coneheads lead. David Cone lasted 4 innings, giving up 4 runs. The Fish scored their first run of the game in the 6th on a Adrian Beltre groundout scoring Ben Grieve from 3rd. The Fish made it 4-2 in the 8th on a Becker homer. But coming into the 9th, the Fish were still down 4-2, with just 3 outs left. Starting the 9th inning was the Coneheads' premier closer, Mariano Rivera. The first batter, Beltre, struck out. The next, Edgar Renteria, hit a double. Rivera threw a wild pitch, moving Renteria over to 3rd. Pinch hitter Ben Petrick walked, and was replaced at first by pinch runner Tim Bogar. Rivera was wild once again, throwing another wild pitch, scoring Renteria from 3rd and moving Bogar to 2nd. 4-3 Coneheads. Redmond up to the plate, and he walks. Pinch hitter Jeremy Giambi up to bat, with 1 out and runners on 1st & 2nd. Base hit! Bogar scores, and Juan Gonzales throws the ball home to Piazza .. and the ball sails over his head. The error lets Mike Redmond score as well. The Fish have done the unthinkable and have knocked closer Mariano Rivera for 3 runs and have taken the 5-4 lead. Now the pressure was on the Coneheads. They had the bottom of the 9th to overcome the 1 run deficit. Coming onto the mound for the Fish was closer Guillermo Mota. Up first was Dave Dellucci, who singled. Shannon Stewart hits a grounder to Beltre, who makes the out at second. 1 out, runner on first. Up next was Aaron Boone, who flied out. 2 outs. Not looking good. At bat was Darrin Erstad, who was a reserve this year who hit .219. But Erstad regressed to his rookie form .. which was actually pretty good. Erstad singles, putting runners on 1st & 2nd with 2 outs. Up next was Ray Durham. Durham singles, loading the bases with 2 outs. The next batter was Corey Koskie. This was the at bat to decide the game. Mota vs. Koskie. Would Koskie blow the at bat, and put the Coneheads down 0-2 in the series? No. Koskie gets the clutch hit, hitting the ball into the outfield. 2 runners cross the plate, and the Coneheads win game two in their last at bat for a 6-5 ballgame. SERIES TIED 1-1. The Fish scored early on their home turf, scoring on RBI's by Konerko and Redmond in successive innings to make it 2-0 Fish in the 2nd. The Conehead machine shifted into gear in the 3rd, when Durham scored after hitting a triple, and Preston Wilson cranked out a 3-run homer. Instantly it was a 4-2 Coneheads game. Then, "the moment" happened. Alex Ochoa doubled, and Bruce Aven (IE-that @#$*@# Fish guy) came up to bat with 2 outs. Aven grounded one to Scott Rolen, who threw it to first .. or tried to throw it to first. The ball sails over Thomas' head, Ochoa scores, and Bruce Aven winds up at 2nd. Konerko hits an RBI single to score Aven. Tie ballgame. Up next was Vladimir Guerrero, who up to this point hasn't done too much ... until now. Guerrero smacks a 2-run homer, putting the Fish up 6-4. Edgar Renteria singles, and Adrian Beltre hits an RBI double. 7-4 Fish, and 5 of those runs are unearned. We move to the top of the 9th, the Coneheads still trailing 7-4. Guillermo Mota on the mound for the Fish. First up is Frank Thomas, who flies out. 1 out. Ray Durham walks. Corey Koskie, hero of game two, is up next. Would Koskie save the day in his 2nd consecutive game? Not quite, he grounded out but advanced Durham to 2nd. 2 outs. Up next was pinch hitter Dave Hansen. Would Hansen play the role of hero? YES. Hansen cranks the ball out of the park to whittle the Fish's lead to 1 run. Mota was done, and up to the mound came Bruce Chen to face Shannon Stewart. Chen buckled down and got things done, striking out Stewart to end the inning. Sacramento wins a wild one, 7-6 to take the series lead. FISH LEAD 2-1. Ray Durham singled in the 1st inning, stole second, and scored on Corey Koskie's single. The Coneheads made it 2-0 in the 3rd on a Koskie RBI double. Meanwhile, Mike Sirotka was just chugging along, throwing 7 shutout innings (yet giving up 10 hits). Mariano Rivera came on in the 9th with a 2 run lead and got 3 quick outs. Both pitchers lived up to their potential, baffling the opposing hitters for most of the game. The Fish finally scored in the 6th when Alex Ochoa hit a solo homer, which was just Johnson's 4 hit given up. The score would remain 1-0 at the top of the 9th, when the Coneheads had just 3 outs to score at least a run, and they would face Bruce Chen. First batter up was Mike Lansing, who struck out. Next up was Shannon Stewart, who reached first base on an error by Edgar Renteria. Chris Gomez strikes out for out #2. 1 out left. With Darin Erstad at bat, Shannon Stewart stole second to move into scoring position. Erstad ended up walking to put runners at 1st & 2nd with 2 outs. Ray Durham came up to bat, and he walked as well. Bases loaded, 2 outs. Bruce Chen was done, and Brad Rigby came on the mound for Sacremento. Up to the plate was Corey Koskie, who has been hot this series, but was 0-4 today. Would Koskie save the day again with the last AB of the game? No. Koskie strikes out, and Sacramento wins a bonafide pitcher duel. John Smoltz goes 8 shutout innings and Johnson gives up 1 run and strikes out 13 in 7 2/3 innings in the 1-0 Fish victory, and Sacramento is 1 game away from advancing to the RY conference finals. This was a must-win game for the Coneheads, who find themselves down 3-2 in series play. The mid-season deal that brought John Smoltz and David Cone to the Fish was validated as a good one, as Cone threw 6 shutout innings. Tim Hudson was on the ball for most of the game as well. Well, at least on the mound. In the 3rd inning, with runners on 1st & 3rd, Vladimir Guerrero hits a grounder to Frank Thomas. Thomas throws the ball to Hudson at first, but the throw is behind Hudson's back. Hudson can't come up with it, Vladimir Guerrero reaches first base safely, and Mike Redmond scores from 3rd base. Hudson would pitch 7 (almost) shutout innings. The Coneheads were being blanked at the plate all game, and they found themselves down 1-0 with only 3 outs left. If they didn't score in this inning, there would be no next game, it would mean the end of their season. Fish closer Guillermo Mota was on the mound. First batter up was Mike Piazza, who walked on 4 straight pitches, and was replaced at first by pinch runner Preston Wilson. Up next was Juan Gonzalez. Gonzalez has been punchless all series. A homer here would instantly win it for California. Does he come through? Nope, Gonzalez gounds out, moving Wilson to 2nd. 1 out. Dave Dellucci up at bat. Dellucci flies out. 2 outs, but Preston Wilson is moved to 3rd. The next batter up was Shannon Stewart, who was 1 for 20. It was all up to Shannon Stewart. A hit would tie up the game, a homer would win it, and anything else would mean the end of the Coneheads' season. Moment of truth time. If there was ever a situation that defined clutch, it was this. The Fish were 1 out away from upsetting the Coneheads and advancing to the RY conference finals, and the Coneheads were 1 out away from a done season. Did Stewart come through? YES! Stewart hits the single up the middle, and Preston Wilson scores. 1-1 ballgame, and the Coneheads live for another inning. We would go to extra innings. We move now to the bottom of the 10th. The Fish failed to score, so it was a 1-1 ballgame. Mota was still on the mound, and the first up to bat was pinch hitter Pat Hansen. Hansen wasn't much for dramatics, as the 2nd pitch from Mota was blasted of of Hansen's bat .. over the infield .. over the outfield .. past the warning track .. and over the wall! California came out swinging in game seven. Down 0-1, with 2 runners on base and 2 outs, Omar Daal takes matters into his own hands by smacking a 3-run homer. Piazza added a solo shot in the 3rd and a 2-run shot in the 5th for a 6-1 lead. After that, California never looked back. Sacramento put up a heck of a fight for the first six games but simply ran out of gas. California wins game 7 by a 7-2 score, and go on to face the Road Warriors in the RY conference finals. CONEHEADS WIN 4-3.
