1999 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 - Reservoir Dogs (93-69) vs. Somerville Sluggers (93-69) This round 1 battle features two teams that are perennial contenders. Each have had some playoff successes, but have never captured the big prize. Unfortunately, for one of these teams, they're not going to do it this year either. The Reservoir Dogs usually make it to the playoffs with a mega-platoon, but this year they're loaded with full-timers, starting with super-stud 3B Chipper Jones. Jones hit 52 homers, scored 139 runs and drove in 148. OF Jeromy Burnitz was close behind, hitting 40 homers and drove in 128 runs. OF's Bobby Abreu, C Ed Taubensee, OF Marvin Benard and IF's Todd Helton and Randy Velarde also put in solid seasons. Orlando Hernandez was an ace pitcher in the true sense, going 17-7 with a 3.52 ERA. Scott Elarton and Bret Saberhagen also put in solid seasons in the rotation. Jose Lima went 12-11 with a mid 4 ERA. The bullpen wasn't much to write home about this year, with closer Troy Percival saving only 15 games (but going 8-3). Chipper Jones and Orlando Hernandez made the all-star team. The Somerville Sluggers can be summed up in three names: Ramirez, Ventura, Batista. Manny Ramirez smacked 45 dingers with 135 runs scored and 119 RBI's, while Robin Ventura hit 38 homers with 130 runs and 146 RBI. Tony Batista was one of the top shortstops this season, hitting 42 homers and drove in 142 runs. 1B Mark Grace had a .382 on base average, which let him score 130 runs. Doug Glanville had a .393 OBA with 115 runs scored and 34 stolen bases. Curt Schilling was the defacto ace in '99, and had a 12-5 record in 25 starts. Wins were distributed evenly among the staff, which had a 4.95 team ERA. A highlight of the Sluggers' pitching staff is closer Derek Lowe, who made the all-star team and finished 2nd in the league in saves with 37. The Dogs won the season series 5 games to 4. The Dogs have home field advantage. ****************************************************************** GAME ONE -- Sluggers (Schilling) at Dogs (Hernandez) Doug Glanville made his 1st at bat of the post-season count, hitting a base-hit single, then stealing 2nd and moving to 3rd on a throwing error by Taubensee. Glanville scores on a deep sacrifice fly by Manny Ramirez. Mark Grace didn't help his team in the bottom of the 1st, committing 2 errors, but luckily for Somerville the Dogs didn't capitalize on his mistakes. In the bottom of the 4th, with Chipper Jones at first, Jeromy Burnitz puts the Dogs on the board in a big way, with a 2-run homer. 2-1 Dogs. The Dogs added to their lead in the 5th on RBI singles by Benard and Helton. The Dogs got into trouble in the top of the 8th when Orlando Hernandez loaded the bases with 1 outs. Mike Mohler would come on to face Henry Rodriguez. But Rodriguez wouldn't deliver, lining out to Helton. The Sluggers go quietly in the 9th inning as the Dogs take game 1 by a 4-1 score. DOGS LEAD 1-0. The Dogs' Scott Elarton got into trouble early. In the 1st, with runners at 2nd & 3rd, Robin Ventura hit an RBI single for the early lead. A batter later, Henry Rodriguez came up to the plate and emptied the bases with a 3-run shot. Somerville scores 4 runs in the 1st inning for the 4-0 lead. Elarton got into trouble again in the 5th, when he loaded the bases with 0 outs. Elarton got Batista and Rodriguez to strike out, giving him just 1 more out to get out of the inning unscathed. Alas, Somerville wasn't going to end the inning scoreless, as Tony Womack hit an RBI single for the 5-0 Sluggers lead. The Dogs started nibbling away at the lead in the 6th inning, when Bobby Abreu hit one over the fence with Todd Helton on board for a 5-2 Somerville game. But that's all the Dogs would get. Sluggers closer Derek Lowe gets 3 outs in the 9th for the save as Somerville takes away home field advantage with the 5-2 game 2 victory. SERIES TIED 1-1. Somerville drew first blood in game three, when Alberto Castillo hit an RBI single. The Dogs tied things up in the 4th on a Chris Widger single. In the 4th, with Ventura at third, Henry Rodriguez grounds out, scoring Ventura, and moved Tony Batista to 3rd. The next batter, Castillo, hits a ground ball to Chipper Jones, who tries to throw Batista out at home. Batista avoids the tag and scores, making it a 3-1 Sluggers game. In the 6th, Chipper Jones doubled, making his 1st hit of the post-season. Burnitz would bring him home with a 2-run homer, tying the game up at 3. In the bottom of the 6th, the Sluggers would load the bases with 2 outs. Scott Sullivan was on the mound and pinch hitter Craig Grebeck was at bat. Would Grebeck smack a grand slam? No, but he did get himself hit by the pitch, which was good enough. A run scores, making it a 4-3 game. In the bottom of the 8th, with Dave Eiland on the mound and runners at 1st & 3rd, Tony Womack hit a double, scoring both runners for a 6-4 game. Womack would move to 3rd on a Tapani bunt and score on an Eiland wild pitch. We move now to the top of the 9th. Jose Santiago takes the mound to close it out for the Sluggers. 1st batter up is Randy Velarde, who takes Santiago deep. After Santiago's Rheal Cormier imitation, he's replaced by Bob Howry, who gets the 3 outs. Somerville wins game 3 by a 7-4 margin, and take the lead in the series. SLUGGERS LEAD 2-1. The Sluggers' Steve Trachsel didn't last too long, going only 3 2/3 innings. Somerville nickel and dimed the lead away, scoring a run in the 4th & 5th for a 4-2 Dogs game. The Dogs score twice more in the 7th after loading the bases with 0 outs. The Sluggers made their big comeback in the 8th. Angel Echevarria got an infield hit which scored Manny Ramirez from 3rd. Mike Mohler came on board to face Henry Rodriguez, who hit an RBI double. Closer Troy Percival became the new reliever got Jeff Frye to ground out, but yet another Slugger crossed home plate to make it a 6-5 game. But that's all the Sluggers would muster. Percival padded the Dogs' lead himself in the 9th, cranking out a 2-run homer, and Randy Velarde added a solo shot himself for a 9-5 Dogs game. The Dogs scored 3 runs in the first three innings, and the Sluggers matched them. 3-3 in the 3rd. The Sluggers took the lead in the 5th on a Manny Ramirez 2-run shot. the Dogs came back in the 7th when a Nitkowski wild pitch scored Todd Helton from 3rd. 5-4 Sluggers. The Sluggers padded their lead in the bottom of the 7th on an Angel Echevarria 2-run homer. 7-4. The Dogs made it interesting in the late innings. In the 8th, Marvin Benard hit an RBI triple, and scored on a Todd Helton fielder's choice for a 7-6 Sluggers game. The Dogs would go into the 9th inning with just 3 outs to erase a 1 run deficit, and they had to do it facing Sluggers closer Derek Lowe. The first batter, Jeromy Burnitz, walked, and was replaced by pinch runner Kevin Sefcik. Taubensee flies out for the 1st out of the inning. With Randy Velarde at bat, Sefcik makes the steal attempt and succeeds. It actually wasn't needed, as Randy Velarde wound up with a walk. Runners on 2nd & 1st with 1 out. Pinch hitter Erubiel Durazo couldn't get things done, striking out for out #2. Just 1 more out and the Sluggers would win game five. Up to bat was infielder Ron "don't call me Rafael" Belliard. Belliard manages a walk to load the bases with 2 outs. Marvin Benard up to bat. Benard could be the hero or the goat. Benard chose to be the hero. Benard gets a clutch single, scoring Sefcik and Velarde for the 8-7 Dogs lead. In the bottom of the 9th, Troy Pervical got Manny Ramirez to hit into a game ending double play. The Dogs come back in the 9th to win game 5 by an 8-7 score. The Reservoir Dogs are now just 1 game away from the MK conference finals. DOGS LEAD 3-2. The Sluggers got the early lead in the 1st, when Manny Ramirez singled in Doug Glanville. But the Dogs put on the power in the 4th. Chipper Jones, starting to perform like the very stud he is, smacks a 3-run homer for a 3-1 Dogs game. The Sluggers close the gap at 3-2 in the 6th when Elarton's wild pitch scored Ramirez from 3rd (despite the errant pitch, Elarton actually wasn't half bad his 2nd time around). In the late innings, the Dogs pulled away. Bobby Abreu hit a 2-RBI bases loaded single in the 7th and 3 singles in the 8th scored 3 more runs. With an 8-2 lead, the 9th inning wasn't an issue. The Dogs win game six by an 8-2 score, and win their first round battle. They advance to the MK conference finals to face the winner of the Wet Sox/Rock battle. DOGS WIN SERIES 4-2.
