1999 CFOD PLAYOFFS PREVIEW Mantle/Koufax Conference Finals Cincinnati Rock (4-3 over Wet Sox) vs. Reservoir Dogs (4-2 over Sluggers) A meeting between the division pennant winners to determine who will represent the Mantle/Koufax conference in the 1999 CFOD world series. The Reservoir Dogs battled the Somerville Sluggers in round 1, and won the last 3 playoff games to win it in 6 games. Their top performer so far has been 3B Chipper Jones, who is hitting .333 with a .722 slugging percentage, 4 runs scored and 7 RBI. 1B Todd Helton has a .455 on base average with 7 runs scored, while shortstop Alex Gonzalez is hitting .600 with 5 runs scored in 10 at-bats. Troy Percival has been solid, throwing 5 innings of shutout ball with 4 saves in 4 games. Ace Orlando Hernandez has been solid as well, throwing 13 2/3 innings with a win. The Rock fought a tough battle with the Oregon Wet Sox before winning it in 7 games. The Rock got through round 1 with pitching. Andy Ashby and Bartolo Colon have been stellar, throwing 30 innings with an average ERA in the 2's, and going 3-1. Reliever Scott Williamson has thrown 7 2/3 innings of 1.17 ERA ball. The hitting has been a real team effort. Their playoff RBI leaders are catcher John Flaherty (hitting .368) and Tony Fernandez, each with 6 RBI. Paul O'Neill (hitting .350) and Pokey Reese (.500 on base average) have 5 RBI. The Dogs won the regular season series 5-4, but the Rock have home field advantage due to their better regular season record (97 wins vs. 93 for the Rock). ****************************************************************** GAME ONE -- Dogs (Hernandez) at Rock (Millwood) A stellar pitcher's duel. The hitters couldn't get anything going, as Orlando Hernandez and Kevin Millwood were throwing 2-hitters through 5 innings. The first run of the game came in the 7th, when pinch hitter Mike Stanley hit a solo home run to give the Rock a 1-0 lead. In the top of the 9th, Armando Benitez came on board to close out the Dogs. But the Dogs had other plans. Marvin Bernard walked and Todd Helton singled to give the Dogs runners on base with 0 outs. Bobby Abreu then drove them both in on a 2-RBI triple. Abreu would score from 3rd on a groundout by Chipper Jones. 3-1 Dogs. The Rock would have to make up the 2 run deficit in the bottom of the 9th, and they would have to do it against closer Troy Percival. Percival got 2 quick outs from flyouts by Flaherty and Shumpert. Percival then plunked Febles and walked Tony Fernandez to put 2 runners on with 2 outs with a 2 run lead. Percival would face pinch hitter Mark Quinn. Quinn was coming into the playoffs with a reputation as a formidable pinch hitter, but there would be no formidability from Quinn's bat. Quinn grounds out, ending the game. The Reservoir Dogs win game 1 by a score of 3-1 and take away home field advantage. DOGS LEAD 1-0. The Dogs got to the Rock early. Really early. On the 2nd pitch of the game, Marvin Benard hit a solo homer against Bartolo Colon. With 2 on and 2 outs in the first inning, Ed Taubensee hit a 2 RBI single for the 3-0 Dogs lead. The Rock made it a 3-1 game in the 4th when Troy Glaus grounded out, letting Tony Gwynn score from 3rd base. The Rock had their big inning in the 5th, and it all happened with 2 outs. Gwynn started off the scoring in the inning when he hit an RBI single to make it a 3-2 Dogs game. The bases were then loaded with Rock batters, and JT Snow drove a couple more home with a 2 RBI single to give the Rock the 4-3 lead. As if this wasn't enough, the bases were reloaded yet again and Paul O'Neill hit a 2-RBI single, giving the Rock 5 runs in the 5th inning for a 6-3 Rock game. The Dogs were not ready to give up on game two, though. In the 7th Bobby Abreu hit an RBI single, scoring Bubba Trammell. Scott Williamson came on board for the Rock, and found himself in a bases loaded situation. Williamson ended up walking Jeromy Burnitz, and walking in a run. 6-5 Rock. Williamson then threw a wild pitch, scoring Abreu from 3rd. 6-6 game. In the 8th inning, Marvin Benard went deep again, breaking the tie and giving the Dogs the lead once again. In the top of the 9th, the Dogs scored a couple more runs on singles by Durazo and Alex Gonzalez. 9-6 game. In the bottom of the 9th, closer Troy Percival ended the game on a double play by Mike Stanley. The Reservoir Dogs take game two by a score of 9-6. DOGS LEAD 2-0. The Rock finally put a run up on the board in the 7th when John Flaherty hit a solo shot. 5-1 Dogs. Then, "the inning" happened in the top of the 8th. With Troy Percival on the mound with the bases loaded and 1 out, JT Snow hit an RBI single. 5-2. Troy Glaus struck out for out #2. Bases still loaded. Up next was Paul O'Neill. Would O'Neill hit a homer for the 1st grand slam of the post-season? No, but he did the next best thing. O'Neill hit a key double, clearing the bases and instantly tying up the game at 5-all. The bases were reloaded, and partially cleared with a 2-RBI double by Mike Stanley. Armando Benitez came on board in the 9th and got 3 quick outs for the save. Cincinnati scores 6 runs in the 8th to take game three by a score of 7-5. DOGS LEAD 2-1. Game five would determine who has the inside track for the ultimate showdown: The 1999 CFOD World Series. In the 1st, Brady Anderson drove in the first run of the game by a sacrifice fly, scoring Tony Fernandez from 3rd. In the top of the 4th, with 2 outs and runners at first and third, Kevin Millwood helped out his own cause with an RBI double. 2-0 Rock. In the 6th, Randy Velarde doubled and scored on Belliard's single. 2-1 Rock. In the top of the 9th, the score was still 2-1 in the Rock's favor, and it got a lot more favorable. With runners at first and second, JT Snow singled to center field. Gwynn moves around 3rd and Anderson trucks around 2nd. Benard throws home. The ball sails over Taubensee's head, letting Gwynn and Anderson score. JT Snow moves over to 3rd base on his own single, and the Rock are up 4-1. We move now to the bottom of the 9th, with the Rock still enjoying a 4-1 lead. Jerry Dipoto on the mound for Cincinnati. Bubba Trammel is first up at bat, and first to sit down with a strikeout. Second batter, Marvin Benard, doubles. Armando Benitez comes to the mound and faces Todd Helton. Helton flies out, but the ball is hit deep enough for Benard to advance to 3rd. Bobby Abreu is next up to bat, and walks. 2 on, 2 out, 3 run lead for Cincinnati. The next batter up is Chipper Jones. A homer would tie it up. But Jones fails to deliver, grounding out. Cincinnati wins their 3rd straight game with a 4-1 victory. The Rock are 1 game away from the CFOD World Series. ROCK LEADS 3-2. The Dogs loaded the basesin the 1st, and Jeromy Burnitz drove everyone home with the playoff's first grand slam. 4-0 Dogs. If that wasn't enough, Burnitz and Ed Taubensee were responsible for back-to-back homers, giving the Reservoir Dogs 5 runs in the 1st inning. The Rock scored as well in the 1st, with a Paul O'Neill RBI single. 5-1 Dogs. Cincinnati loaded the bases in the bottom of the 3rd with 0 outs. Troy Glaus could have tied it up with a homer, but instead grounded into a double play. Still, it was enough for Tony Gwynn to score from 3rd base. 5-2 Dogs. The Dogs added to their lead in the 5th on RBI's by Burnitz & Taubensee. 7-2 Dogs. The Rock could have easily rolled over and died for the rest of this game, but it didn't happen. In the bottom of the 5th, Troy Glaus once again saw the bases loaded with Rock hitters. But this time, instead of hitting into a double play, Glaus hit a 2-RBI single. 7-4. The next batter, Paul O'Neill, finished up the job, smacking a 3-run homer. Just like that, the Rock score 5 runs in the 5th and tie the game up at 7 all. In the 6th, with Mike Stanley at second, Tony Gwynn doubled, breaking the deadlock and putting the Rock ahead 8-7, their first lead of the game. In the 7th, the Rock added to their lead on a John Flaherty solo shot. 9-7 Cincinnati. In the top of the 9th, Scott Williamson was charged with the duty of delivering the Rock to the CFOD World Series. First batter up, Durrazo, strikes out. Out #1. Second batter, Bubba Trammell, strikes out. Out #2. The 3rd batter was Marvin Benard. One more out and the Dogs' season would be over. A hit and the tying runner would come to the plate. But it was not to be. Benard flies out, ending the game. Cincinnati comes back from a drubbing to win game six by a score of 9-7, and win the series in 6 games. The Rock will now face the California Coneheads in the 1999 CFOD World Series. ROCK WINS 4-2.
