1999 CFOD WORLD SERIES PREVIEW Rock (4-3 vs. Wet Sox, 4-2 vs. Dogs) vs. Coneheads (4-3 vs. Fish, 4-0 vs. Warriors) In the beginning, there were 24 teams, then there were 8, then there were 4, and now there are two. The best from the MK conference vs. the best in the RY conference. The Cinncinnati Rock are actually no strangers to the world series. They made an appearance (as the Cincinnati Kings) in the 1994 CFOD World Series where they lost in 7 games to ... the California Coneheads. The Kings team that year were headed up by Mike Mussina, who won 20 that year. Nowadays, Mussina is the ace pitcher for the Oregon Wet Sox .. who the Rock defeated in 7 games. Also on that 1994 Kings team was a young rookie named Jeromy Burnitz, who would go on later to be a star for the Reservoir Dogs .. who the Rock beat in 6 games. But alas, in 1994 the Kings were defeated in 7 games by the Coneheads. One of the outfielders for the 1994 champion Coneheads was an outfielder by the name of Paul O'Neill. Now O'Neill is the centerpiece of the 1999 Cincinnati Rock. O'Neill is currently the playoff leader in RBI's with 14, and is hitting .357 with a .571 slugging average. Rock OF Tony Gwynn is the playoff leader in runs scored with 12, and is hitting .447 to boot. Catcher John Flaherty is slugging .659 with 3 homers and 9 RBI's in 11 games. Ace Kevin Millwood has gone 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA in 4 starts. 3rd starter Andy Ashby is 3-0 in 3 starts. Two starters from the 1994 CFOD champions are in the lineup for the 1999 edition of the Coneheads: catcher Mike Piazza and 1B Frank Thomas. Piazza has been the driving force for the Coneheads in the playoffs, hitting 4 homers, scoring 6 runs and diving in 8. 2B Ray Durham has been a supreme leadoff hitter, hitting .385 with a .500 on base average with 8 runs scored in 11 games. Randy Johnson has posted a 1.93 ERA in 3 starts, but only a 1-2 record. That's because the Coneheads struggled mightily against the wildcard Fish (coming 1 at bat away from elimination in game 6 before winning the series in 7), but then only pitched 1 game in the series against the Warriors (due to the straight 4 game sweep). Pitcher Tim Hudson is 1-0 with a 0.43 ERA (only 1 earned run allowed in the post-season) and Omar Daal is 2-1 with a 1.93 ERA in 3 starts. The Rock and Coneheads split the regular season series, and the Coneheads have home field advantage. In the 1994 world series, Cincinnati pushed the Coneheads to a 3-1 deficit before California won 3 straight games to clinch it in 7. How will the rematch turn out? ****************************************************************** GAME ONE -- Rock (Millwood) at Coneheads (Johnson) This one started off as a pitcher's duel. Neither side got a hit until the bottom of the 3rd, when Randy Johnson (of all people) got the first hit of the game off Kevin Millwood. In the same inning, with runners on 1st & 3rd, Frank Thomas singled, scoring the first run of the game. Mike Piazza broke it open with a 3-run homer. California scores 4 runs in the 3rd for the 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the 4th, Preston Wilson hit a solo shot for the 5-0 lead. Meanwhile, the Conehead pitching just kept chugging along. In fact, the only one who could stop Randy Johnson was mother nature. A rain delay in the 5th caused Randy Johnson's arm to stiffen up, so he left after 4 1/3 innings of no-hit ball. Keith Foulke came on and pitched a solid 4 2/3 innings of 1 hit ball for the win. California throws a combined 1-hit shutout and go on to win game 1 by a score of 7-0. CONEHEADS LEAD 1-0. In the top of the 2nd, John Flaherty singled and was driven in by a Pokey Reese double for the first score of the game. In the 4th, the Rock scored again with their team effort. With runners on 1st & 2nd, John Flaherty sacrificed them over to 2nd & 3rd, and the runner at third was driven in by Reese's sacrifice fly. 2-0 Rock. In the 6th, with 2 outs and runners at 1st & 3rd, Reese drove in yet another runner with an RBI single, placing runners at 1st & 3rd again. Bartolo Colon had been pitching a shutout at this point, and helped out with the bat, hitting an RBI single for a 4-0 Cincinnati lead. But the Coneheads would not let the Rock win this one without a fight. In the 7th, Mike Piazza hit his playoff-leading 6th home run, a solo shot for the 4-1 Rock game. The Coneheads' next opportunity would come in the 9th inning. Armando Benitez was on the mound for the Rock, trying to preserve a 3 run lead. First batter up, Mike Piazza, grounded out. The next batter, Juan Gonzlaez, struck out. Then, Preston Wilson singled. The next batter, pinch hitter Pat Hansen, hit an RBI triple (Hansen is sporting a 3.667 slugging average in 3 playoff at-bats!). 4-2 Rock. Aaron Boone was at the plate and was the tying run. But Boone would not be delivering any playoff magic today. Boone strikes out, ending the game. Cincinnati's team effort pays off, as the Rock wins game 2 by a score of 4-2, and take home field advantage. SERIES TIED 1-1. In the 2nd, Preston Wilson hit a solo homer. Jim Leyritz tied it up at 1 in the bottom of the second with a homer. In the 3rd, Ray Durham singled, stole second, and scored on Koskie's single. 2-1 Caifornia. The Rock came back again in the 4th, when with 2 outs and the bases loaded, Rich Amaral bounces a ball towards Durham, who bounces it off his glove. A runner scores, and the game is tied up again at 2. In the 5th, eerily similar to the 3rd inning, Shannon Stewart walked, stole second, and scored on Aaron Boone's single. 3-2 California. In the bottom of the 5th, with runners at 1st & 2nd, Derek Bell grounded out, moving Cincinnati runners to 2nd & 3rd. The next battter, Tony Fernandez, flied out for a sacrifice fly attempt. Mike Stanley attempts to score from 3rd, Preston Wilson attempts to throw him out, and Mike Piazza attempts to catch Wilson's errant throw .. but it doesn't happen. Stanley scores from 3rd, and Carlos Beltran putters around 3rd base to score as well. 4-3 Cincinnati, and the Rock take the lead for the first time in the game. The Coneheads' next opportunity to score came in the 7th. With Scott Williamson on the mound and runners at 1st & 2nd, Scott Rolen singles. Preston Wilson moves around 3rd to go home, and Beltran tries to throw him out. Deja vu. The ball sails past Leyritz, Wilson and Stewart score, and Rolen winds up at third base. California takes back the lead in a 5-4 game. Ray Durham hits a sacrifice fly to score Rolen, and Frank Thomas capped off the inning with a 2-run homer. California scores 5 runs in the 7th to take an 8-4 lead. The Rock chipped away at the lead in the 8th with a Brady Anderson solo homer. The Rock would move into the bottom of the 9th with a 3 run deficit, and they'd be facing Todd Ritchie. The first batter, Juan Encarnacion, struck out. The second batter, Terry Shumpert, hit a solo shot. 8-6 California. Ritchie was done for the day, and Mariano Rivera was brought on board. Mike Stanley strikes out for out #2. The next batter was Carlos Beltran. With a 2 run deficit, would Beltran get a hit? No. Beltran strikes out, and California wins a back-and-forth game 8-6. California takes back home field advantage. Both aces kept the runs few and far between. Mike Piazza scored the first run of the game in the 2nd with a solo shot. The Rock tied it up in the 5th on a solo shot by Derek Bell. Juan Gonzalez broke the tie in the 7th with a solo shot. 2-1 California. In the bottom of the 8th, with Leyritz at 1st, Juan Encarnacion doubles, Leyritz tries to score from first, and the ball is thrown to home. Aaron Boone caught the relay ball and threw it to Mike Piazza, but Piazza couldn't control it. Leyritz scores, and the game is tied at 2. We move now to the top of the 9th. Armando Benitez on the mound for Cincinnati. Juan Gonzalez strikes out. Preston Wilson strikes out. Up next is pinch hitter Pat Hansen, who was 5-5 in the playoffs. But Hansen surprisingly can't deliver, striking out to end the inning. Now Cincinnati would have a shot at winning the game in the bottom of the 9th. With Mariano Rivera on the mound, Brady Anderson got the first out with a groundout. Terry Shumpert didn't do much better, grounding out as well. The last batter, with the score tied 2-2, was Mike Stanley. A homer would win it. What happened? Strikeout. Tie ballgame, and we'd go to extra innings. Both teams would run through their closer and setup men without any scores. In the 12th inning, with Jerry Dipoto on the mound and runners at 1st & 2nd, Darin Erstad sacrificed the runners over to 2nd & 3rd with 1 out. Then, Jerry Dipoto throws a wild pitch, and Sal Fasano tries to score from 3rd. But Flaherty recovers the ball, throws it to Dipoto who tags Fasano out. 2 outs, 2-all. Then, Scott Rolen broke open the game. 2 run homer, and the Coneheads break the deadock at 4-2. The Coneheads would go into the bottom of the 12th with a 2 run lead. Todd Ritchie on the mound, and would face the same batters as were in the bottom of the 9th. Up first was Brady Anderson, who popped out. Up next was Terry Shumpert, who hit a fly out. It was now all up to Mike Stanley to try and pull out a miracle, but it was not to be. Stanley blows chance #2 to be a hero by grounding out, ending the game. California wins game #5 in 12 innings in a 4-2 win. The Coneheads are now 1 win away from becoming the 1999 CFOD World Champions. CONEHEADS LEAD 3-2. A win was necessary to force a decisive game 7. In the top of the 2nd, JT Snow tripled and scored on Paul O'Neill's groundout. 1-0 Cincinnati. The Coneheads scored their first runs of the game in the 5th. With the bases loaded, Corey Koskie hit a 2-RBI single. Then, in the 6th, the Coneheads broke it open. With the bases loaded, Shannon Stewart hit the playoff's first grand slam. 6-1 Coneheads game. California never looked back. The Coneheads piled on *7* more runs to make this one never in doubt. California ends the Rock's season in the 9th on a Troy Glaus double play, wins game six by a score of 13-1, and win the 1999 CFOD World Series. The Coneheads clinch their 2nd championship in a row and 6th overall. CONEHEADS WIN 4-2, 1999 CFOD WORLD CHAMPS! PLAYOFF MVP: Lots of Conehead candidates. There's of course Mike Piazza, who hit 7 homers, scored 11 runs and drove in 14 RBI's. There's Omar Daal, who went 3-1 with a 2.19 ERA, and there's even Shannon Stewart, who got that oh-so-clutch hit in game six of the first round battle with the Fish, but this playoff MVP goes to reliever Keith Foulke. Foulke pitched in 11 games, giving up just 3 runs in 20 innings for a 1.35 ERA. Foulke also went 3-0 with a save.
