1999 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW Road Warriors (90-72) vs. Arizona Thunder (98-64) This one is guaranteed to be a treat for the fans. Both teams feature punishing offenses. The Road Warriors set a new league record for team homers, while Arizona's Mark McGwire set a new record for individual homers. The Warriors got production out of almost every spot, with 6 players with 100+ runs, 5 with 100+ RBI, and 4 with at least 40 homers. One of the "weakest" links was shortstop Alex Rodriguez, who had a slightly sub-par year at shortstop but still hit 29 homers and was one of the best shortstops in the league. Carlos Delgado is an MVP candidate at 1B, with 58 dingers, 123 runs scored and 156 RBI's, and OF Brian Giles, 3B Fernando Tatis and CF Ken Griffey Jr. were all members of the 40 homer club. The pitching was "merely OK", and definitely benefitted from the strong hitting staff. SP Bobby Witt was the team leader in wins with a 16-7 record (and a 5.20 ERA), while 3 other pitchers had double-digit wins. Closer Billy Koch had 25 saves. Delgado, Tatis, Alex Rodriguez, Brian Giles, Ken Griffey Jr and Billy Koch were all-stars. Arizona has enjoyed a long period of dominance in the late 90's, and a good deal of that has been due to 1B Mark McGwire, the most dominating hitter the past 3-4 years. McGwire had his best season ever, hitting a league record 76 homers, scored 150 times, and drove in a league record 177 RBI. OF Matt Stairs and 3B Matt Williams put in "respectable" seasons as well, hitting 40+ homers with triple digit runs scored and runs driven in. OF Johnny Damon, 2B Chuck Knoblauch and CF Mike Cameron were all high-OBA hitters who stole bushels of bases and scored triple digit runs. On pitching, SP Mike Thurman made the all-star team, but slumped in the 2nd half to finish with a 11-5 record. Kenny Rogers and Alex Fernandez finished strong, combining for a 27-13 record. Closer Matt Mantei had a sub 3 ERA. McGwire, Knoblauch, Stairs, Williams and Thurmond were all-stars. Both teams are very similar. Arizona had a slightly better team ERA, but both won their games with offense. Expect plenty of high-scoring games. Arizona won the season series 6-3, and have home field advantage. ****************************************************************** GAME ONE -- Road Warriors (Finley) at Arizona Thunder (Thurman) For two teams that beat the other team up all season, they sure pitched well. In the bottom of the 2nd, Matt Stairs hit a 2-run homer to give Arizona the 2-0 lead, but that's all the runs that scored in this game. Chuck Finley was actually quite effective, giving up only 2 runs and struck out 11, but the mighty Warrior batters couldn't drum anything up to support him. Arizona takes the first game 2-0. THUNDER LEAD 1-0. This was a game that put the pitchers on notice: Prepare for rough times ahead. In the top of the 1st, Brian Giles hit a single to score Jose Offerman from 2nd. In the bottom of the 1st the Thunder countered, with a Matt Williams single scoring Chuck Knoblauch from 2nd. In the 3rd, Mark McGwire gave the hometown fans what they came to see when he hit a solo home run for a 2-1 Thunder lead. The Warriors tied things right back up at 2-all in the top of the 4th when Mike Difelice singled, scoring Alex Rodriguez from 2nd. In the bottom of the 5th, Jose Rosado got into trouble when he loaded the bases with Arizona batters with 2 outs, but escaped without a scratch when Knoblauch flied out. In the bottom of the 6th, Royce Clayton doubled, moved to 3rd on a Rosado wild pitch, and scored on Matt Mantei's single. 3-2 Thunder. In the bottom of the 7th, with Warriors closer Billy Koch on the mound, Mark McGwire gave the fans another treat, this time blasting a 2-run shot for the 5-2 Thunder lead. We move now to the top of the 9th, and Thunder reliever Buddy Groom is on the mound. Unfortunately for Arizona, Groom is shaky, putting runners at 1st & 3rd with 1 out. Troy O'Leary starts the Warriors comeback, hitting an RBI single for a 5-3 game. Fernando Tatis is the next batter, and strikes out, giving the Road Warriors just 1 more out to win the game. Carlos Delgado comes up to bat. Delgado is a terror in the clutch, and this was a clutch situation. Would Delgado be a hero? Yes. Delgado hits an RBI double, making it a 5-4 game with runners on 2nd & 3rd. Groom was done for the day, and up came JD Smart, who had a 4.92 regular season ERA. Up to bat was lefty Brian Giles, when lefties hit .398 against Smart in the regular season. A single would win the game. Would Giles make a case for playoff MVP? No. Giles flied out, ending the inning and giving Arizona the 5-4 squeaker. Arizona successfully defends their home turf and now go to Busch Stadium with a 2-0 series lead. THUNDER LEADS 2-0. In the top of the 1st with the bases loaded, Arizona's Matt Williams eeks out an infield single, scoring Johnny Damon from 3rd for the 1-0 lead Thunder. The Warriors punished Fernandez in the bottom of the 1st. Jose Offerman started things off by reaching 1st on an error by Knoblauch, and when Tatis singled, Offerman moved to 3rd and scored when Matt Stairs' throw flew over Williams' head. Griffey singled, scoring Tatis from 2nd, and Brian Giles capped the inning by hitting a 2-run homer. 4-1 Warriors. The Thunder came back in the top of the 2nd, on an RBI by Matt Stairs and an RBI triple by Johnny Damon for a 4-3 score. The Warriors added to their lead in the 3rd on a Troy O'Leary RBI single. Then things got quiet for a little bit. Fernandez didn't last long for Arizona, only going 3 1/3 innings. In the 7th, Johnny Damon doubled, moved to 3rd on a Kile wild pitch, and scored on a Chuck Knoblauch FC. 5-4 Warriors. After Stairs walked, Kile was done for the day, and reliever Rob Nen came to the mound to face Mark McGwire. Bad idea. McGwire takes Nen deep, giving Arizona the 6-5 lead. Did the Warriors roll over and die after losing their lead? Nope, they just opened up a six-pack on the Thunder. In the bottom of the 7th, Rheal Cormier came onto the mound for Arizona, loaded the bases with 0 outs, and promptly left. After Cormier's well done job, Buddy Groom came on. Alex Rodriguez hit an RBI single, but Carlos Delgado also tried to score from 2nd and was throw out at home. 6-6 ballgame. Delgado could have waited, too, because the next batter Troy O'Leary let all the Warrior runners go home at a leisurely pace with a 3-run dinger. 9-6 Warriors. Groom would let another run score before letting Mike Timlin on board. But Timlin couldn't stop the bleeding either, as the Warriors wind up scoring *8* runs in the 7th inning to make it a 13-6 game. The Thunder made a comeback in the 8th with Johnny Damon hitting a 2-RBI triple, but that's all they'd score. Scott Sauerbeck finishes up the 9th for the Warriors who win a wild one, 13-8. Both teams came out swinging. The Warriors scored twice in the top of the first, but the Thunder got the lead in the bottom of the innings on a 3-run shot by Mark McGwire. The Thunder added to their lead in the 2nd when Damon scored from 2nd on a singles by Matt Stairs and Matt Williams. 5-2 Thunder. In the mid-innings, the teams would trade runs until it was 6-5 in the Thunder's favor in the 9th inning. Now the Warriors had just 3 outs to make up the 1 run deficit. Mike Timlin was on the mound for the Thunder. First batter up was Jose Offerman, who singled. Fernando Tatis hit into a potential double play ball, but managed to make it to first in time (Offerman was out on the play). 1 out. Turns out Tatis' foot speed was critical, because the next batter, Ken Griffey Jr., knocks it out of the park. 7-6 Warriors lead. The Thunder would now be the ones in the hot seat in the bottom of the 9th, trying to overcome a 1 run deficit. Rob Nen was on the mound for the Warriors. 1st batter up was Mark McGwire, who struck out. 2nd batter was Chris Stynes who grounded out. 2 outs. It was all up to Mike Cameron to save the day .. and he at least gave the hometown fans hope by hitting a single. Sauerbeck replaced Nen on the mound. Royce Clayton came to bat, and singled, moving Cameron to 3rd. With 2 outs, suddenly the momentum is shifting in Arizona's favor. Up next was Brent Mayne. A single would tie it up, and anything more could win it. Would Mayne be the hero of the day? No. He struck out to end the game. The Road Warriors come back from a 3-2 game deficit to win game 7 by a single run, 7-6. The Road Warriors advance to the RY conference finals to take on the winner of the Coneheads/Fish series. WARRIORS WIN 4-3.
