1998 CFOD PLAYOFFS - SOMERVILLE SLUGGERS VS SAN FRANCISCO SHRINERS - ROUND 1 Randy Johnson must be kicking himself right now. After toiling on many a dismal Shriner team, the first full season he is away they make the playoffs. Sorry Randy, it's Sammy's team now. Sammymania is in full swing in the bay area, with the Shriner's 4-game sweep of the Reservoir Dogs in round "0" play. In 4 playoff games, Sosa has 3 homers, 6 runs scored and 6 RBI. Jim Thome has 7 RBI thanks to a few 3-run homers. Yorkis Perez has gained superhuman powers, saving 3 of the Shriner's 4 wins with no runs allowed. Tom Candiotti is the 4th pitcher in the rotation, but he tossed a 2-hit shutout to win the round 0 series. The Shriners are no strangers to success, with several pennants and a 1993 world series appearance to their credit. An off-season trade shook things up, and it looks like it was for the better. Outfielders Manny Ramirez and Henry Rodriguez were the bash brothers, combining for 95 home runs between them and an average of 126 runs driven in. Middle infielders Tony Womack and Barry Larkin combined for 100+ stolen bases and 200+ runs scored. Ace Curt Schilling struggled a bit this year, going 12-13, but 2nd starter Tim Wakefield won 17 games. Bob Howry was the closer for much of the season, saving 32 games with a 1.58 ERA. After Howry went down, closer supreme John Wetteland was brought on board. In regular season action, the Sluggers defeated the Shriners 6 games to 3. Somerville has home field advantage in the series. ************************************************************************** GAME ONE - Shriners (Neagle) at Sluggers (Schilling) San Francisco has been hot in the post-season so far, and that carried over to game one of this series. In the top of the 2nd, Jim Thome, Paul O'Neill and Glenallen Hill had consecutive walks to load the bases with 0 outs. FP Santangelo hit into a DP, but it was enough to score Thome. The Shriners lead 1-0. The next runs to score would occur in the 6th. Believe it or not, the Sluggers' Curt Schilling actually had a no-hitter throught 5 2/3 innings. But Jeff Reed broke it up with a single, and Sammy Sosa did what Sammy does best, hitting a 2-run dinger. 3-0 Shriners. San Francisco scores again in the 7th with an RBI triple. The Sluggers finally got on the board in the 8th when Tony Batista hit an 2-run shot, but by then it was 6-2. San Francisco goes on to win game 1 by a score of 6-2, and take home field advantage. San Francisco had their way with the Sluggers for most of the game. Eric Young smacked a 3-run dinger in the 2nd. Jeff Reed hit a 2-run dinger in the 4th. Glenallen Hill went 2-3 with a homer and 3 runs scored. By the 7th inning, the Shriners were up 7-0. The Shriners got a little too comfy with their lead, as they had a pretty bad bottom of the 7th. Tony Batista hit a 2-RBI double, breaking Bohannon's shutout (and ending his game). Then, off Jeff Shaw, Manny Ramirez had his first homer of the post-season, hitting a 2-run dinger. 7-4. In the bottom of the 9th, with 2 runners on, Shriners reliever Dan Miceli faced Joe Carter. Home run? No, but Carter hit the ball to Santangelo, who bobbles it. Error. Run scores from third, making it a 7-5 game. But, with 2 outs and 2 runners on board, Miceli strikes Damian Miller out, ending the game. San Francisco wins game 2 by a score of 7-5, and takes a 2-0 series lead SHRINERS LEAD 2-0. They got off to a good start in the 1st, when Paul O'Neill hit an RBI double. The Sluggers tied the game up in the 4th when Barry Larkin reached on error, stole second, and scored on Mark Grace's double. Somerville starter Chris Carpenter was doing pretty good after 5 innings (just 1 earned run), but the 6th inning was a doozy. Sammy Sosa hit a 2-RBI double. 3-1 San Francisco. Paul O'Neill hits an RBI double. 4-1. Jim Thome scores on a wild pitch. 5-1. Carl Everett with an RBI double. 6-1. Jeff Reed's RBI single capped off a 6-run 6th for the Shriners, giving them a 7-1 lead. If the Sluggers were to make a comeback, they'd have to start pretty soon. Their attempt at a comeback started in the 8th, when Tony "Nuclear Power" Womack cranked a 2-run dinger. Just 4 more runs to tie. In the 9th, Rich Amaral hit an RBI single, making the run deficit just 3. Moment of truth time. The Sluggers would load the bases with 2 outs. Shriner reliever CJ Nitkowski was brought on to try and get the final out, but he would have to do it against Mark Grace. Grace is a "Terror" in the clutch, but Nitkowski is " Tough" in a jam. Something would have to give. Unfortunately for Somerville, it was Grace. Grace grounds out to Eric Young, ending the game with the Shriners getting away with a 7-4 win. San Francisco is just 1 game from the MK conference finals. SHRINERS LEAD 3-0. They were down 0-3, and the guy they were facing on the mound is coming off a 2-hit shutout. The Sluggers got off to a good start in the 1st when Manny Ramirez hit an RBI double. They made it 2-0 in the 4th when Ramirez went deep. No answer from the Shriners. In the 7th, Doug Glanville had his first homer and RBI's of the post-season, hitting a 2-run shot. Other than Jim Thome's solo shot in the 7th, the Shriners took this game off. San Francisco post-season streak ends at 7 games, but they still lead the series 3-1. SHRINERS LEAD 3-1. Neither team could score until the 6th, when Paul O'Neill hit a solo shot, giving San Francisco the 1-0 lead. Mike Macfarlane evened things up in the 7th on a solo homer of his own. The Shriners retook the lead in with a 3-run 7th, led by RBI's from Carl Everett and Eric Young. The Sluggers made it a 4-2 game in the 8th when Womack scored from third on Manny Ramirez's groundout. We move now to the bottom of the 9th. Shriner closer Yorkis Perez on the mound. Just 3 outs away from the Mantle/Koufax conference finals and a match with the Wet Sox. First up, Harold Baines. Groundout. 1 out. Next up is Henry Rodriguez, who was limited this series due to the high number of lefties in the Shriners rotation. Perhaps he should have sat out this at bat, because he struck out. 2 outs. The final (?) batter for the Sluggers is Doug Glanville. A homer could help spark a rally to extend the series, but it just wasn't to be. Glanville flies out to the outfield, and San Francisco wins game 5 by a score of 4-2. The 2nd league wildcard clinches the series in 5 games and now moves to the Mantle/Koufax conference finals where they will face the Oregon Wet Sox to see who gets the call to the 1998 CFOD world series. SHRINERS WIN 4-1.
