1998 CFOD PLAYOFFS PREVIEW - OREGON WET SOX vs. SPRINGFIELD 'TOPES Oregon makes a return trip to the playoffs in '98 as a conference wildcard, after winning their division last year. The 'Topes make a return trip to the playoffs in '98 as a pennant winner, after making it last year as a conference wildcard. The Wet Sox offense downshifted just a tad this year, thanks to meddling injuries to '97 MVP Larry Walker and a mysterious first half slump to 1B Jeff Bagwell. But the emphasis is on slight. Walker set the new OBA record with a .490 clip, and Bagwell finished the year with 100+ runs and RBI. SS Nomar Garciaparra was solid again, with 37 taters, 105 runs and 132 RBI's. Young Andruw Jones turned his game up a notch, hitting 30 homers and drove in 125 runs. Pitching for Oregon was among the best in the league. Mike Mussina pitched 237 2/3 innings and won 18. 10-10 Andy Benes was traded for Rolando Arrojo, who went 4-2 in 11 starts (with a 2.47 ERA, almost a full point below Benes). Closer Rob Nen was unstoppable, saving 40 games with a 1.72 ERA and almost assured of fireman of the year. The 'Topes game starts and ends with pitching, which was well ahead of the pack with a 3.47 team ERA. Ace Kevin Brown will vie for Cy Young honors, with a 19-8 record and a miniscule 2.23 ERA. All of their starts won at least 10 games (Pettitte with 16 down to Jesus Sanchez with 10). Mike Williams and Rudy Seanez shared closer duties, combining for 32 saves. Springfield didn't have to score a lot of runs to get the wins, but they still had a few offense standouts. Centerfielder Bernie Williams hit .321 with 11 triples, 28 homers, 118 runs and 75 RBI. Journeyman Eric Davis hit 35 homers and drove in 91 runs. 1B Tino Martinez drove in 92. Springfield has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. The 'Topes won the season series 5-4. **************************************************************************** GAME ONE - Wet Sox (Mussina) at 'Topes (Brown) No blowout in this one. This was a close one all the way. In the bottom of the 1st, Bobby Higginson hit an RBI double and scored on 2 wild pitches for a quick 2-0 'Topes lead. Wet Sox catcher Charlie "you can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him" O'Brien drove in Garciaparra on a near- double play ball to make it a 2-1 Springfield lead. In the top of the 5th Bret Boone tied things up at 2-all when he doubled and scored on a Larry Walker single. Kevin Brown broke the tie himself in the bottom of the inning, doubling, moving to 3rd on a Mussina wild pitch (3rd of the day, perhaps Brown doing his Craig Biggio impersonation caused Mussina to slip?) and is driven in by Bernie Williams. The score would stay at 3-2 Springfield until the top of the 9th, when 'Topes closer Mike Williams climbed aboard to clinch game #1. Nu-uh. Williams folds like a cheap picnic table, giving up 3 quick singles, including a Bret Boone RBI single to tie things up at 3-all. But Williams hunkered down, getting 3 outs and keeping things tied. The 'Topes couldn't score in the bottom of the 9th, so we would go to extra innings. In the 10th, Oregon almost gets the lead when Andruw Jones hit a triple, but Jermaine Allensworth couldn't drive him in. The teams traded narrow moments for several more innings, until the top of the 15th. In the 15th, Garrett Anderson doubled, was sacrificed to 3rd, and pinch hitter David Howard drove him in. Oregon leads 4-3. In the bottom of the 15th, with 1 out, Wet Sox reliever gets Freddy Garcia to hit into a double play, ending the game. Oregon wins game 1 by a score of 4-3, and takes home field advantage from Sprinfield. WET SOX LEAD 1-0. Eric Davis doubled, moved to 3rd on a balk, and scored on Martinez's RBI single. Shane Andrews drove in another run with a double. Oregon made it a 2-1 game in the 2nd on a sac fly by Jones. Eric Davis padded the 'Topes lead in the 3rd on a solo dinger. But the Wet Sox can turn it up when necessary, and that's what they did in the 5th when Bret Boone blasted a 2-run homer. Tie ballgame, 3-all. In the 6th, the 'Topes loaded the bases with 2 outs, and Dustin Hermanson at the plate. But Hermanson didn't have to swing, since Hitchcock threw a wild pitch which scored Tino Martinez from 3rd. 4-3 'Topes ballgame. And that's how it would end. Springfield notches a win on the board. WET SOX LEAD 2-1. Wet Sox OF Garrett Anderson would help clear some of the congestion, hitting a bases clearing 3-RBI double. Carlos Hernandez would drive in Anderson, making a 1-0 game suddenly 5-0. Oregon closer Rob Nen got Martinez to fly out, and struck out the last 2 batters, giving Oregon the 5-0 win, and clinch the series 4 games to 2.
