1998 CFOD MANTLE/KOUFAX CONFERENCE FINALS San Francisco Shriners vs. Oregon Wet Sox Oregon comes back for a return appearance in the MK conference finals, while this is San Francisco's first conference finals. This is the first time in the playoffs for San Francisco, and already they are seasoned professionals. San Francisco bowled over the Mantle division winner Reservoir Dogs 4-0 in "round 0" play, and defeated the Koufax division winner Somerville Sluggers 4-1 in 1st round play. Sammy Sosa continues to be on fire, scoring 10 runs and drove in 11 RBI in 9 games. Closer Yorkis Perez has saved 4 games in 7 appearances, with no runs allowed in 5 2/3 innings. Oregon almost won it all last year, pushing the Boston Whaleheads to 7 games before losing the final game. Well, Boston isn't around for the playoffs this year, so maybe it's the Wet Sox's year. Who has been hot? Garrett Anderson is hitting .400, and while Nomar Garciaparra is hitting below .200, he does have 5 runs scored and 4 runs driven in. Rolando Arrojo has been one of their better starters in the post-season, going 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in 14 2/3 innings. Fireman of the Year Rob Nen has pitched 7 innings of shutout ball, notching 2 saves in the process. San Francisco won the regular season series against the Wet Sox by a 5-4 margin. Oregon has home field advantage in this series. ************************************************************************** GAME ONE - Shriners (Neagle) at Wet Sox (Mussina) San Francisco had a lot of momentum coming into this series, but Oregon stopped them flat in their tracks, blowing them out of the water with 12 runs (while allowing just 4). Jeff Bagwell was on fire, going 3 for 5 with 2 homers and 6 RBI. The Shriners will have to regroup and try again tomorrow. WET SOX LEAD 1-0. In the bottom of the first, they loaded the bases with 0 outs. Bohanon did get 2 outs, but not before Walker got the base on balls, forcing in a run. 1-0 Wet Sox. Then, the old Shriner charm kicked in. With the Shriners loading the bases in the third, Eric Young hit a 2-RBI single. The Wet Sox evened things up in the 3rd when Bagwell scored on a groundout by Nomar Garciaparra. Brian Bohanon didn't last too long in this game, pitching just 2 1/3 innings. But things stabilized after that. Pete Schourek pitched 3 2/3 innings of long relief for San Francisco. No one would score until the 8th inning, when Sammy Sosa broke the tie with a solo home run. Jeff Reed added to the total with a 2-on, 2-out 2-RBI double. The Wet Sox still had a chance to come back .. until the 9th inning that is. Sammy Sosa put the game away with a 3 run shot. Bohanon got chased early, but it was the Wet Sox relievers who decided the game. San Francisco wins game 2 by a score of 8 to 2, and even up the series. SERIES TIED 1-1. Wet Sox reliever Roberto Hernandez closed out the 9th, getting Loretta to fly out and getting groundouts from Sosa and Thome. The Wet Sox are now a game away from a repeat appearance in the CFOD world series. WET SOX LEAD 3-1. But, so far they've hit a rough spot with the Wet Sox in the Mantle/Koufax conference final, and have lost a little momentum, now down 1 game to 3. The Shriners tagged Mussina for a run early, when with runners on 1st and 3rd, Sammy Sosa hit into a double play, yet Eric Young scores from 3rd (there seems to be a lot of these RBI-producing outs this post-season!). The Wet Sox got on the board in the 2nd, when Andruw Jones doubled, moved to 3rd on Garciaparra's groundout, and scored on a Larry Walker groundout. Oregon pulls ahead in the 3rd when Fox doubled in Carlos Hernandez, and added to their lead when Nomar hit a bases loaded grounder to Thome, who bobbles it. Error on the first baseman, and now a 3-1 Wet Sox lead. Jeff Bagwell causes the Wet Sox bench to start getting world series anxiety in the 5th, when he blasted a solo shot. By the 8th inning, Oregon was starting the celebration in the dugout. Garrett Anderson hit a 2-RBI double for a 5-run lead. In the bottom of the 9th, with the score 8-2 Wet Sox, Mike Mussina struck out Paul O'Neill for the final out. Oregon wins game 5 by a score of 8 to 2, and advance to the world series for the 2nd straight year. WET SOX WIN 4-1.
