1998 CFOD WORLD SERIES PREVIEW Oregon Wet Sox vs. California Coneheads Meet the new teams, same as the old teams. A couple of world series vets make return appearances in 1998. Oregon makes their second straight appearance in the world series, defeating the Springfield 'Topes in 6 games and the San Francisco Shriners in 5. Oregon has been led in the post-season by Jeff Bagwell, who in 11 games has a .400 OBA, .513 slugging average, 7 runs scored and 9 RBI's. Nomar Garciaparra has only 6 hits so far in the post-season (giving him a crummy .136 batting average), yet he has 8 runs scored and 6 RBI. Two of Oregon's strongest performers in the playoffs have been relievers. Roberto Hernandez (1997 fireman of the year) and Rob Nen (1998 fireman of the year) have combined for a 1.03 ERA in 17 1/3 innings with 4 saves between them. Mike Mussina is aiming for playoff MVP honors, going 32 innings with a 3.09 ERA and 3 wins in 4 starts. California makes their first world series appearance in 4 years. The Coneheads overcame a 3-1 deficit to the Brouhaha to win their first round series in 7 games, and defeated the San Diego Termites (best regular season record in 1998) in 5. California has enjoyed excellent performances from several hitters, including Shannon Stewart (.325 average, .600 slugging, 7 runs, 9 RBI), and Jose Valentin (.364 OBA, .519 slugging, 10 RBI). The most notable performance is reliever Trevor Hoffman, acquired during the season but due to burnout issues never appeared in a regular season game for the Coneheads. Hoffman has appeared in 9 games, pitching 13 1/3 innings, enjoying a 1.35 ERA and 7 saves. Co-reliever Mariano Rivera has pitched in 10 innings with a 1.80 ERA and 3 wins to his name. The regular season series was tied 2-2. Both teams are conference wildcards, so California gets home field advantage due to their better record (just 1 more win!). ********************************************************** GAME ONE - Wet Sox (Mussina) at Coneheads (Smoltz) Baseball fans had their mitts ready, as the balls were flying out of the park in this one. Mike Piazza in the 1st, runner on base. Gone. 2-0 Coneheads. Cliff Floyd in the 2nd, runner on base. Gone. 4-0 Coneheads. Not wanting to be left out of the act, Jeff Bagwell in the 3rd, runner on first. Gone. 4-2 Coneheads. Frank Thomas in the 3rd, 2 runners on base. Gone..er, sorry, force of habit. Thomas actually hits a double, which scores 2 runs. 6-2 Coneheads, and Mussina exits early after finishing only 2 complete innings. Scott Rolen makes it a 7-2 California game in the 6th with an RBI single. In the 8th, with 2 outs, Rolen is walked, in favor of Frank Thomas. Who hits a 2-RBI double. 9-2 Coneheads. Oregon gets thumped in game one of the world series. CONEHEADS LEAD 1-0. Neither side could get any offense going for much of the game. Through seven each starter was pitching a shutout, Glavine giving up 4 hits and Arrojo just 1. The first run scored in the game was in the top of the 8th, when with 2 on and 2 out, Garrett Anderson hit a single, scoring a run. Glavine lasted 7 2/3 innings, giving up 6 hits and 1 run. The Wet Sox's next opportunity would come in the 9th, facing the mighty Trevor Hoffman. Fox singled, then David Howard singled. Fox tried to stretch it to 3rd base, and Juan Gonzalez threw to get him out .. but it sails over Scott Rolen's head. Fox scored, and it's now a 2-0 Wet Sox lead. The next batter, Jeff Bagwell, sends one over the fence, giving Hoffman an unheard of 3 runs in the 9th and a 4-0 Wet Sox lead. In the bottom of the 9th, Rob Nen gets 3 outs by strikeouts, giving Oregon the win, and home field advantage. SERIES TIED 1-1. Steve Woodard let another run score in the 3rd when a wild pitch scored Andy Fox from 3rd. The Coneheads and Wet Sox traded runs in the 5th & 6th inning to make it a 3-1 game. The top of the 7th turned out to be an inning Andy Fox would like to have done over. Mike Simms hit a ground ball to Fox, who fielded it and threw to first...and the ball gets away from Bagwell. Simms at second on an error. The very next batter, Shannon Stewart, hits a ground ball to Fox. Fox again fields it, again throws it to first, and *again* the ball gets away from Bagwell. Simms scores, and Shannon Stewart ends up at second base on error. 3-2 Wet Sox. Jose Vizcaino singles, scoring Stewart from second. Tie ballgame. 2 Conehead runs in the 7th, and 2 errors to Andy Fox's stat sheet. The 8th inning went without a hitch, as did the 9th. We would go to extra innings with the score tied 3-3. The Wet Sox were the first to be on the hot seat in the 10th. Roberto Hernandez was the reliever on the mound. Frank Thomas fouled a pitch off, which was caught for out #1. Cliff Floyd was next, and singled. Craig Biggio struck out for out #2. Juan Gonzales had struggled all game, going 0-4 with 3 K's, but he made his last at bat of the game count, hitting an RBI double. Scott Rolen drove in Gonzalez with a single, making it a 5-3 California game. Oregon would have to score at least 2 runs in the next inning if they wanted to win this one. Mariano Rivera had already appeared in the game, and Trevor Hoffman was resting from some big work in games 1 and 2. So who is up? Jay "2 losses" Powell, who has not had a very good post-season. He did manage to get Larry Walker to groundout for out #1, but then walked Jeff Bagwell and gave up a single to Nomar Garciaparra. A Jay Powell wild pitch put Bagwell and Garciaparra at 3rd & 2nd base. Powell was looking real shaky, but managed to strike out Garrett Anderson. 2 outs. Andruw Jones walks to load the bases. Oregon's hopes now rested on one 28-year old backup catcher Alberto Castillo. A homer (or even a single) would forever enshrine him in Oregon Wet Sox folklore...but it was not to be. Castillo grounds out, giving Jay Powell the save and California the win. The Coneheads win game three by a score of 5-3. CONEHEADS LEAD 2-1. The Coneheads was the first to put themselves in a comfortable situation in the 3rd, when they loaded the bases. Scott Rolen drove in the first run on a single, and Pizza made it a 2-0 game with a single of his own. Juan Gonzalez tried scoring from second on Piazza's single, but Charlie O'Brien got the ball early, and held onto it despite Gonzalez' best attempt at mowing him over at home plate. Oregon made it a 2-1 game in the bottom of the 3rd on a RBI double by Anderson .. Brian Anderson. They tied it up in the 4th when Nomar Garciaparra singled, stole 2nd, and scored on an Anderson double .. Garrett Anderson, that is. Scott Rolen broke the tie in the 5th on a sacrifice fly. The next big test would come in the bottom of 7th. Wet Sox at the plate, 0 outs, runners on 1st & 3rd, Mariano Rivera on the mound. Pinch hitter Kevin Jordan hits a grounder to Jose Valentin, who goes for the out at home to prevent the run. Pinch hitter Lou Merloni grounds out, putting runners at 3rd & 2nd with 2 outs. But California gets out of the inning without a run scoring, thanks to a Bret Boone strikeout. Oregon didn't get anything out of the 7th inning, but they came right back in the 8th. After getting the save in yesterday's game, Jay Powell got the late inning honors again. Powell didn't do quite so good, allowing Jeff Bagwell to hit a sacrifice fly. Tie ballgame. Garciaparra hits a grounder to Jose Valentin, but Jose mishandles it, letting Nomar on base via an error. 2 on, 1 out. Garrett Anderson grounds out, making it 2 outs, but with runners on 3rd & 2nd. Up next is Andruw Jones. Jones had been on this game, going 3 for 3. Would he make it 4 for 4? YES. And in dramatic fashion. Jones hits a triple, driving in 2 runs and a 5-3 Oregon lead, their first this game. With Oregon in the driver's seat, it was up to California to come through in the top of the 9th. Oregon put little used Antonio Alfonseca on the mound to face the Conehead offense. Jose Vizcaino grounds out for out #1. Then Cliff Floyd blasts a solo homer. 5-4 Oregon, and Alphonseca comes out of the game with a third of an inning to his credit. Chuck McElroy comes on to seal the victory. Craig Biggio struck out for out #2. Juan Gonzalez was all the Coneheads had between a tie ballgame and a loss.. but today was not Gonzalez' day. Gonzalez grounds out, ending the game and giving Oregon the 5-4 victory. Tied series. SERIES TIED 2-2. Unfortunately, Mussina did himself in with start #2. In the top of the 2nd, Mussina plunked Gonzalez on the shoulder. Gonzalez moved to 2nd on a wild pitch, and scored on a Shannon Stewart single. Stewart steals 2nd, moves to 3rd on another wild pitch, and scores on a John Smoltz single. In the 3rd, California made it a 3-0 game when Craig Biggio scored from 2nd on a Frank Thomas single and a Garrett Anderson throwing error. It was made 5-0 in the 3rd when Juan Gonzalez drove himself and Thomas in with a 2-run blast. It only got worse for the Wet SOx, as Oregon couldn't recover in this one. California pounded out 17 hits en route to a 11-1 pasting. California is now just 1 win away from their first CFOD championship since 1994. CONEHEADS LEAD 3-2. Rolando Arrojo would have to prove he was worth all that the Wet Sox gave up for him in the middle of the season. From #2 overall pick this year on a different team to pitching in game six of the world series. More on Arrojo later. The Wet Sox scored first in the 3rd with a 2-out Bret Boone single. California tied it right up at 1 all in the bottom of the inning when a Cliff Floyd groundout allowed Stewart to score from 3rd. With the game still tied in the 6th, runners on 1st and 3rd, California prevents Oregon from scoring when Glavine throws the ball home, getting Fox out. The Wet Sox put themselves in another opportunity to score in the 7th when Larry Walker hit a 0 out double. Walker moved to 3rd on a Garrett Anderson flyout. Carlos Hernandez was next at bat. A flyout would let Walker score, but Hernandez hits a grounder. Walker tries to score anyways. Biggio throws home to get him out, but Walker avoids Piazza's tag, scoring the goahead run. Back to Arrojo. Glavine was good in this game, but Arrojo was better, holding the Coneheads to 1 run on 4 hits over 8 innings. He was allowed to pitch the 9th. First up, Craig Biggio. First down, too. Biggio with a K. Next up, Mike Piazza. Mike, you too, sit down. K. Then, with 2 outs, Arrojo gets Rolen to groundout to end the game. Oregon wins game 6 by a 2-1 margin, and force a deciding game seven. SERIES TIED 3-3. Oregon took the early lead in the 2nd when Carlos Hernandez' RBI double scored Andruw Jones from 2nd. But California wasted little time in taking back the lead. In the 3rd, Mike Simms puts California over with a 3-run shot. Then, in the 4th, pitcher Sterling Hitchcock gets singled to death. Cliff Floyd with an RBI single. 4-1. Juan Gonzalez with an RBI single. 5-1. Mike Piazza with an RBI single. 6-1. Hitchcock would last just 3 2/3 innings. Meanwhile, the Wet Sox would have numerous opportunities to score, but fail to capitalize on them. They did get a run in the 6th on a 2-out Hernandez single. In the 7th, the Wet Sox loaded the bases with 2 outs, but Garrett Anderson couldn't capitalize, flying out to end the inning. (Oregon would wind up with 12 men left on base in the game, compared to California's 5). In the top of the 9th, with 2 outs, runners on 1st and 3rd and the score 8-2 California, Mariano Rivera gets Nomar Garciaparra to ground out to Scott Rolen, ending the game, ending the series, and ending the season. Oregon put up a great effort, but came up short. California wins their 5th overall CFOD title and 1st since 1994. **CONEHEADS WIN 4-2, 1998 CFOD CHAMPIONS!** Playoff MVP: Any number of Conehead batters could take this one, as Juan Gonzalez, Cliff Floyd, Mike Piazza, Scott Rolen and Shannon Stewart all put up MVP-worthy stats.
