1998 CFOD FIREMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD Value Formula = 2.6*(Wins/4.2+Saves/4.2+IP/100*(4.38/ERA+1.427/WHIP)) 2nd Runner Up: Mariano Rivera, California Coneheads NAME WHIP VALUE ERA W L S G IP H R ER BB K HR WP DP Rivera 1.2 28.0 2.21 5 5 31 61 69.1 54 20 17 29 43 6 0 10 After easily winning fireman of the year honors for the Reservoir Dogs in 1996, Rivera had a rough time in Coors field last year. 1998 saw Rivera in closing duties for California, and he returned to form. Rivera saved 31 games, won 5, and had a 2.21 ERA. 1st Runner Up: Bob Howry, Somerville Sluggers NAME WHIP VALUE ERA W L S G IP H R ER BB K HR WP DP Howry 0.9 30.5 1.58 6 5 32 55 62.2 44 12 11 14 52 5 1 10 Rookie Bob Howry terrorized his opponents in the late innings, with a tiny 1.58 ERA, fewer walks+hits than innings, won 6 games, and saved 32. Burning out a month before the season ended probably hurt Howry's shot at FOTY, but it was still a year most relievers can only dream about. 1998 CFOD Fireman of the Year: Rob Nen, Oregon Wet Sox NAME WHIP VALUE ERA W L S G IP H R ER BB K HR WP DP Nen 1.1 34.7 1.72 5 4 40 64 68 46 14 13 27 68 4 5 5 Oregon gets their second consecutive FOTY, this time with a reliever who has been with the team since 1995. He had an ace's season on a team which provided him a lot of run support, as evidenced by his 19 wins and just 2 losses on the season. The Termites would of likely made the playoffs with or without Wells, but with Wells on the mound San Diego captured their first ever pennant and go into the playoffs with the best record in the CFOD. 1st runner up: Greg Maddux, Seattle Moshers NAME WHIP VALUE ERA W L G IP H R ER BB K HR WP DP Maddux 1.1 28.3 3.09 18 6 36 244.2 232 91 84 39 193 20 3 14 Is there ever a season where Greg Maddux is *not* in contention for a Cy Young award? Maddux had yet another fine season, with an ERA in the top ten (3.09) and 18 wins to his credit. It's only too bad that Maddux's effort was unable to bring Seattle to the post-season. 1998 CFOD Cy Young: Kevin Brown, Springfield 'Topes NAME WHIP VALUE ERA W L G IP H R ER BB K HR WP DP Brown 1.1 32.6 2.23 19 8 33 246.2 219 73 61 54 219 8 6 19 Kevin Brown has put in several good years in a row, but failed to have that one season which really put things together. Until now. Brown tied for the league lead in wins with 19, was the league leader in ERA by over half a run, led the league in shutouts (4), opposing slugging average (0.301!), fewest homers allowed (8), fewest extra base hits allowed (41), quality starts (27), quality start percentage (0.818), and complete games (10). Plus he helped Springfield to their first ever pennant. If that doesn't say Cy Young, I don't know what does. ************************************** 1998 CFOD MOST VALUABLE PLAYER VALUE = (AB+BB)*(SBSLG+OBA-0.800)*.025+0.09*(RUNS+RBI) where SBSLG is slugging percentage with net steals factored in. 2nd runner up: Mark McGwire, Arizona Thunder NAME AVG OBP SBSLG VALUE G AB H 2B 3B HR R RBI BB K SB CS McGwire 0.276 0.427 0.593 28.0 162 572 158 22 2 52 132 135 147 154 0 1 McGwire has been gold for Arizona since coming on board in 1995.
