1998 CFOD RUTH/YOUNG CONFERENCE FINALS California Coneheads vs. San Diego Termites Two of the best teams in the league meet for the right to represent the RY conference in the 1998 world series. San Diego has never made the playoffs before .. but this year everything came together. The Termites were led by the triumverate of Albert Belle, Moises Alou and Andres Gallaraga. The three of them averaged 49 homers, 119 runs scored and 133 runs driven in. Centerfielder Darryl Hamilton and infielder Tony Fernandez averaged 99 runs scored. Ace David Wells won 19 games in the season and had the honor of starting the all-star game. Closers Ricardo Rincon and Jerry Dipoto combined for 49 saved games as the Termites won a league-high 105 games. California has made the playoffs every year since 1991, although this is the first time they've ever entered the playoffs as a wild card, thanks to .. the Termites. They faced a tough opponent in the Brookfield Brouhaha, who pushed them to a 1 game to 3 brink before the Coneheads came back to win it in 7 games. Craig Biggio has been a key player in the series, hitting .273 with 6 runs scored. His infield partner, Jose Valentin, has been a big force in the playoffs, with a .400+ on base average, .600+ slugging average, and 8 runs driven in. Closer Trevor Hoffman has been excellent, throwing 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball and 3 games saved. California won the season series against San Diego by a 7-5. San Diego has home field advantage. ********************************************************************** GAME ONE - Coneheads (Smoltz) at Termites (Wells) First blood was drawn by California. In the 2nd, the bottom of the California batting order, Simms, Stewart, and Vizcaino, each singled, resulting in Simms scoring from 3rd. John Smoltz drove in another run to make it a 2-0 Coneheads lead. But that was short lived, when Moises Alou brought San Diego the lead in the 3rd on a 3-run homer. Andres Galarraga got his first hit of the post-season in the 6th .. which went over the fence. The Termites now have a 4-2 lead. The Termites were leading through 7 innings, but completely lost it in the 8th. With 2 on, Mike Piazza singles, scoring Juan Gonzales. Scott Rolen moves from first to second, and tries to make it to third .. Darryl Hamilton tries to gun him down, but the throw sails over Tony Fernandez's head. Rolen scores, and suddenly it's a tie ballgame. But not for long. Mike Simms blasts a 2-run homer, making it a 6-4 Conehead game. In the top of the 8th, Craig Biggio increased the lead with a 2-run shot. San Diego couldn't come back, and California wins game one by a score of 8 to 4, and takes away home field advantage. You know things are not going well for the Termites when a pitcher taters off of them, which is what Tom Glavine did in the 3rd. But, the Termites came back. In the 4th, Tony Fernandez, Sean Berry and Andres Galarraga hit consecutive singles, scoring a run. Still in the 4th with 1 out, the Termites have the bases loaded. Glavine facing Omar Vizquel, who shows his good eye. Vizquel walks, forcing in a run. Tie game. After Kreuter flied out, Glavine faced Termites pitcher John Thompson. Grand slam? Not quite. Thompson hits a clean ball towards Jose Valentin .. who boots it. Another run scores, and San Diego as the 3-2 lead. Not for long. In the 5th, with 2 on, 2 out, Cliff Floyd clears the bases with a double for a 4-3 Coneheads lead. Craig Biggio drives in Floyd with a single. The Coneheads put some distance between themselves and the Termites in the 8th when Pizza went deep again, this time a 2-run shot. A 3-run 9th for California sealed the game. San Diego loses again 10-3, and are now down 0-2. CONEHEADS LEAD 2-0. In the top of the first, with the bases loaded, 2 outs, Woodard faced Jeff Kent .. who hit a 2-RBI double. 2-0 Termites. The next set of runs would occur in the 5th, when Moises Alou blasted a 2-run dinger. 4-0 Termites. The Coneheads were not producing anything at this point. Kent Bottenfield pitched a no-hitter through five innings. In fact, the Coneheads wouldn't score until the 7th .. but all it takes is one inning. Juan Gonzalez started the Conehead run parade in the 7th with a sacrifice fly, scoring Mike Piazza. Stewart doubled in Gonzalez, and Jose Valentin doubled in Stewart, shaving the Termite lead to just one with a 4-3 game. San Diego still had 2 more innings to go ... 2 innings where California has scored an average of 6 runs a game. The Termites put up some padding in the 8th. Bases loaded, 0 outs situation with Omar Vizquel at the plate. Vizquel clears the bases with a 3-RBI triple. Jeff Conine came up to pinch hit for Bottenfield, and flies out to Floyd .. or so it should have been. Floyd misses the easy fly ball, and Vizquel scores from third. San Diego now enjoyed a 8-3 lead. But San Diego wouldn't need the extra padding. Jerry Dipoto got his first appearance of the post-season, and responded well with 2 innings of no-hit ball. San Diego wins game three by a score of 8-3. CONEHEADS LEAD 2-1. The Termites got to face the Coneheads' 4th starter, and they got to pump up their averages. The Termites batted through the order in the first, and six hitters hit singles, scoring 4 runs. The Coneheads made it a 4-2 game in the 2nd when Juan Gonzalez blasted a 2-run shot. The Termites added to their lead in the 5th when Jeff Kent hit a 2-run dinger. Latroy Hawkins was done for the day, pitching 4 1/3 innings and allowed 6 runs. The Coneheads started to chip away at the lead in the 5th, when Shannon Stewart hit a solo shot. Then things really turned ugly for San Diego. In the 6th, Willie Blair gave up back-to-back-to-back solo homers from Scott Rolen, Frank Thomas, and _Keith Foulke_, a guy who wouldn't be expected to know which way to hold the bat, much less send a ball over the fence. Suddenly it's a tie ball game at 6 runs each. Needless to say, Blair didn't get out of the 6th inning. The Termites would find themselves in trouble in the 7th, when with 2 on, Frank Thomas hit a ground ball to Omar Vizquel .. who boots it. A run scores, and the Coneheads take the lead for the first time in the game. The Coneheads eventually load the bases, where Shannon Stewart walked, scoring another run. Jose Valentin hit a sacrifice fly, making it a 9-6 game. The Termites went quietly in the 8th & 9th, giving California the win. The Coneheads are now just a win away from making 5th appearance (and first in 4 years) in the CFOD world series. CONEHEADS LEAD 3-1. The Termites got right down to business in the 1st, loading the bases. Jeff Kent drove in the first run when he grounded out, scoring Moises Alou from 3rd. Darryl Hamilton eeked out a 2-out infield single, scoring another run. But in the bottom of the 1st, the Coneheads rumbled back, tying up the game with a 2-run homer by Scott Rolen. The Coneheads pulled ahead in the 2nd with a Mike Simms home run and a Cliff Floyd RBI single. 4-2 Coneheads. San Diego and California exchanged runs between the 4th and 5th innings, making it a 5-3 California game. The Termites needed to win this one to make it to game six, and they wouldn't get another decent scoring opportunity until the 9th. They would have to do it against Trevor Hoffman, who has been unreal so far in the playoffs. First batter up, Melvin Nieves. Strikeout, 2 more outs until the Coneheads make the world series. Next batter up is Sean Berry .. who doubles. Berry makes it to 3rd on a Tony Fernandez groundout. 1 more out and the Coneheads go to the world series. But the tying run is now batting, Moises Alou, who has been a force in the series. Hoffman comes unraveled, throwing a wild pitch, allowing Berry to score from 3rd. Now it's a 5-4 game. Hoffman throws to Alou, who hits a deep fly ball to center field. But it hangs up, and Stewart catches it at the track. California wins game 5 by a score of 5 to 4, and goes to the world series for the first time in 4 years. San Diego had a heck of a season, but simply couldn't match the momentum of the Coneheads. CONEHEADS WIN 4-1.
