Yeah, yeah, I know I said that I'd play it tomorrow on Netmeeting, but Dave Kuehn indicated he couldn't make it, so I decided to play it earlier. So, without further ado... SERIES FINALE/SEASON FINALE BETWEEN ARIZONA THUNDER AND SEATTLE MOSHERS The Arizona Thunder has led the Young division throughout the season, fighting off all contenders .. until the last few weeks of the season, when a Seattle Mosher hot streak put them dead even with the Thunder with 1 game left in the season. The last game of the season had the Thunder facing the Moshers on their own home court, with Thunder staff ace Jimmy Key facing Mosher staff ace Greg Maddux. The winner received the Young divison pennant and a ticket to the post-season .. the loser went home. Let's go to the tape, shall we? Both Key and Maddux were in top form. Neither pitcher gave up a run. Through his 7 innings of pitching, Key allowed just 3 hits, and struck out 8. Through his 8 innings of work, Greg Maddux gave up just 4 hits and struck out 12. Both offenses were shut down through 9 innings. The Thunder had only 4 hits, and the Moshers just 3. With a 0-0 tie at the end of 9, we would go to extra innings. In the top of the 10th, with Graffanino on base, closer Mike Timlin was on the mound for the Moshers. Mike Timlin, who had a history of blowing games, was on the mound and was only in there because Rod Beck was done for the season. In a pinch hitting role was Phil Nevin, who had only 1 homer all season in limited action. Guess what happens? Gone. Nevin hits his 2nd homer of the season, making it a 2-0 Thunder game in extra innings. This would mean the Moshers would have to tie or win it in the bottom half of the inning. Could they do it? Nope. The Thunder manager's strategy of using all lefties in this game worked, as Lance Painter got pinch hitter Jed Hansen to ground out, closing out the 10th inning, the game, and the season. The Thunder defeat the Moshers by the score of 2-0 in extra innings, and in doing so clinch the 1997 Young division pennant.
