1997 CFOD WORLD SERIES PREVIEW: Boston Whaleheads vs. Oregon Wet Sox There used to be 24 teams, now there are 2. Best in the MK vs. 2nd best in the RY. Oregon stormed their way to the Koufax division pennant, and have defeated the Sluggers and the Syndicate on their way to the world series. Boston has played the role of underdog all post-season long, having defeated both pennant winners in the RY conference, California and Arizona, to reach the world series. Much of the Oregon offense has been on high gear throughout the playoffs. Sandy Alomar Jr. has 14 RBI, while Jeff Bagwell and Nomar Garciaparra have 14 scored runs. Mike Mussina and Carlos Perez are a combined 5-1 with a sub 2.5 ERA in 7 combined starts. For Boston, the trio of Griffey, Hundley & Rodriguez were responsible for most of the damage to the opponents in the regular season, but in the post-season, Carlos Delgado has been the man, hitting .372/.481/.721 in 12 games with 11 runs scored and 7 RBI. Alex Rodriguez has 9 runs scored. Ace Darryl Kile is 2-1 with a 2.12 ERA in 4 starts. The regular season series was tied 2-2. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GAME ONE - Boston Whaleheads (Darryl Kile) at Oregon Wet Sox (Mike Mussina) The opening game in the 1997 CFOD world series is in the bag. Boston slammed out 5 quick runs in the first, topped by a 2-run shot by Todd Hundley. Travis Fryman drove in a run in both the 4th & 6th innings, but Oregon was still down 5-2 at the end of 6. Griffey & Walker traded home runs in the later innings, but when the final out was recorded, Boston was the victor. Boston takes game 2, and is threatening to make this a very short world series. The Wet Sox are down, but not out. Sandy Alomar made sure of that in the 2nd inning with a 2-run shot. Later in the same inning, Travis Fryman scored from 3rd on a fielder's choice for the 3-0 Oregon lead. The pitching staff settled down for awhile until the bottom of the 7th, when Billy Ashley hit a sacrifice fly for a 3-1 Wet Sox game. Oregon padded their lead in the 8th on RBI's by Walker and Bagwell. Boston crept back in the bottom of the 8th thanks to a 2-run dinger by Ken Griffey Jr., but it wasn't enough as Oregon takes game 3 by a score of 5-3. BOSTON LEADS 2-1. But the crowd hushed in the 1st when Larry Walker smacked a solo shot. Yet, quicker than you can say "Mean Gene Okerlund", the Whaleheads struck back. In the 2nd, Jose Rosado tied things up with an RBI single, and Carlos Delgado put the Whaleheads up 3-1 with a 2-run blast. Both pitching staffs settled down after the 1st 2 innings, which gave game 4 to Boston by a 3-1 score. Boston is now 1 game away from clinching the 1997 CFOD championship. WHALEHEADS LEAD 3-1. The Wet Sox opened up a couple of six packs on the Whaleheads, exploding for 10 runs (compared to Boston's paltry 2). Larry Walker went 4-5 with a dinger, and Jeff Bagwell went 2 for 3 with 2 homers, 3 runs and 4 RBI. And believe it or not, by winning game five, Oregon has taken back home field advantage from Boston. WHALEHEADS LEAD 3-2. In game five Oregon prevailed based on its offense, while in game six Oregon prevailed due to the stellar pitching of Andy Benes. Benes went the distance, throwing a 3-hit 11 K shutout against Boston, while Sandy Alomar helped power the Wet Sox offense with a 2-4, 2 doubles, 2 RBI day as the Wet Sox tie up the series with the 6-0 victory. The title will now be decided with tomorrow's game seven to be played on Oregon's home turf. SERIES TIED 3-3. Boston rumbled out ahead in the 1st inning when Lance Johnson scored on a fielder's choice. Oregon tied it up at the bottom of the 1st when Andruw Jones advanced to third base on a Jeff Bagwell single and scored on an errant throw to home from the outfield. Oregon took the 2-1 lead in the 3rd inning when Andruw Jones scored yet again at Boston's expense when he scored from 3rd base on a Jeff Fassero wild pitch. Boston tied the game up in the 7th at 2-all when Ken Griffey Jr. smacked a solo shot off Carlos Perez. Carlos has been extremely effective during the playoffs, but only lasted through the sixth inning. Boston took the lead in the 8th inning on another solo home run by Todd Hundley. Carlos Delgado made it 4-2 Boston in the 9th on an RBI single. Oregon simply ran out of steam. In the 9th, with 2 outs, closer Darren Dreifort got Travis Fryman to ground out, clinching game seven for Boston 4-2. The Whaleheads win game seven, and are the 1997 CFOD world champs! PLAYOFF MVP: He was Mr. Consistent throughout the playoffs. He isn't the Whalehead leader in runs or RBI's, but he was a central reason why Boston got to the world series in the first place. I'm talking of course of Carlos Delgado, who hit .309/.420/.588 with 14 runs and 10 RBI's in 19 games.
