Boston Whaleheads at California Coneheads: We get in 1997 what we expected in 1996. Boston & California were the two dominant teams the year before, but both were knocked out early and never met. Well, it's a year later, and we now get to see the matchup. The Whalehead franchise hitters, Todd Hundley, Ken Griffey Jr, and Alex Rodriguez are still around, as is staff ace Darryl Kile. First baseman Carlos Delgado has been on fire in the playoffs, hitting .500, with 3 homers, 8 runs scored and 7 RBI in seven games. California is trying to get to the world series for the first time since their 4-peat WS victory in 1994. Boston has it's work cut out for it with a bruising hitting staff. Mike Piazza, Frank Thomas, Paul O'Neill, Craig Biggio and a host of others will make the Whalehead pitching staff sweat. And California has one of the best starting rotations ever assembled, with Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Shawn Estes and Alex Fernandez. Boston won the season series with California 8-4. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GAME ONE - Boston Whaleheads (Kile) at California Coneheads (Glavine) The first one to draw blood in this contest between giants was the Whaleheads, when Alex Rodriguez smacked a solo shot in the 2nd. Glavine & Kile were great throughout the game, as the next time anyone scored was in the 8th, when Todd Hundley tripled and later scored on a Ken Griffey Jr. single. But the Coneheads were not going to go away quietly. In the bottom of the 8th, with 2 outs, pinch hitter David Ortiz came through big time, hitting a 2-RBI double to tie up the ballgame. But the tie was shortlived. Jesse Orosco's first appearance as a 1997 Conehead was a rough one, as he gave up a costly RBI single from Greg Colbrunn. And that was the ballgame. This was one of the best playoff games of the season, with the game going in either direction until the very end. The game started out as if the Whaleheads were going to run away in this one. California scored once in the 1st, but the Whaleheads put up 6 runs in 6 innings make it a 6-1 game after 6. Then, the Coneheads made their run. In the 7th, Blowers hit a 2-out bases loaded RBI single. In the same inning, Craig Biggio hit a bases loaded 2-RBI single to make the game 6-4. In the 8th, Noberto Martin hit a 2-out, 2-RBI single to tie the game up at 6-6. It was a new ballgame. Or was it? Boston broke the tie in the 8th when John Mabry was issued a bases loaded walk to make it 7-6 Whaleheads. The Coneheads had to score in the 9th to keep things alive. And score they did. With 1 out, Scott Rolen hit a sacrifice fly to keep the game alive at 7-all. Boston failed to score in the bottom of the 9th, so we would go to extra innings. California had scored 6 runs in the last 3 innings, so would the 10th be any different? Nope. Frank Thomas hit an RBI single to give the Coneheads the 8-7 lead. Now in the bottom of the 10th, Boston had to score or lose the game, with closer Jesse Orosco on the mound. Orosco walked the first batter he faced, Tim Naehring. Lefty releiver Orosco then had to face pinch hitter Billy Ashley. Ashley had hit only 3 homers all season, but all 3 happened against lefty relievers. So guess what happens? Ashley smacks a 2-run tater. Instant win for Boston, 9-8 in 10 innings. The Whaleheads are now just 1 game away from the CFOD world series. WHALEHEADS LEAD 3-1. The Coneheads nearly threw the game away in the first, when Tom Glavine found himself in a bases loaded situation with no outs. But, a Ken Griffey K and Rodriguez and Delgado fly outs got Glavine out of the inning without any damage. The Whaleheads were the first team to score in the 4th on a 2 RBI double by Brent Gates. The Coneheads scored in the 5th when Jose Offerman biffed a bases loaded, 2 out ground ball, cutting Boston's lead to 1. The Coneheads tied things up in the 7th on an RBI single by Mike Piazza. Then the bottom fell out for California in the 7th. Hundley and Griffey smacked RBI's. 4-2 Whaleheads. Alex Rodriguez with an RBI single. John Mabry with a bases loaded 2 RBI double. Billy Ashley with an RBI single. After the 7th was done, Boston had scored 6 runs in the inning, and took an 8-2 lead. This was too much for California, and in the 9th, Darren Dreifort struck out Frank Thomas to win the game and end the series. Boston wins game 5 by a score of 8-2, and win the series 4 games to 1.
