QUICK PREVIEW: Springfield 'Topes vs. Mechan Syndicate 1997 is the first time the 'Topes have qualified for the postseason. The Syndicate are veterans in post-season play, having won the 1995 CFOD champsionship. The 'Topes boasted one of the best pitching staffs in the league (led by Kevin Brown). The Syndicate were close behind in the pitching department. The 'Topes offense was powered by the big three of Bobby Higginson, Bernie Williams and Tino Martinez (with Mickey Moriandini providing plenty of runs). The Syndicate were a run-generating machine, with Gwynn, Bonds, and Greg Gagne (!) leading the pack. Syndicate have home field advantage, and won the regular season series 7-5. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GAME ONE - Springfield 'Topes (Kevin Brown) at Mechan Syndicate (Justin Thompson) Each staff ace shut the other side down for most of the game. The only scoring noise came in the 8th, when a Kevin Stocker error let Bill Mueller on. Stocker paid for his mistake, as Rafael Palmeiro promptly smacked a 2-run shot to give the Syndicate the lead. Justin Thompson held the 'Topes at bay all game, throwing a 3 hit shutout. SYNDICATE LEADS 1-0. For the first 4 innings, neither team could score a run. The Syndicate took the lead in the 5th when Tony Gwynn tripled and was driven in by Tim Bogar. The 'Topes evened it up at 1 each in the top of the 6th on a Tino Martinez sacrifice fly. The Syndicate retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Manwaring. The Syndicate made it a 3-1 game in the 8th on an Alomar RBI single. Bobby Higginson closed the gap to a 3-2 game in the 9th, but it was all the 'Topes could muster. Mike Stanton held on to get the save, and the Syndicate won game 2 by a score of 3 to 2. SYNDICATE LEADS 2-0. In the bottom of the first, a Bobby Higginson RBI single, Gonzalez RBI single and Zaun sac fly made it a quick 3-0 'Topes lead. In the 4th, with the score 3-1 'Topes, the Syndicate broke things open. Roger Cedeno tripled, and scored on a Manwaring single. 3-2 'Topes. Then, with 2 outs, who does the Syndicate count on to drive in runs? Kevin Foster! Foster comes up big, and smacks a 2 run shot of Hermanson. 4-3 Syndicate lead. Then, after Alomar singles and still 2 outs, who else does the Syndicate count on to drive in runs? Todd Worrell? No! Bonds. Barry Bonds. Bonds bangs a 2-run tater. 6-3 Syndicate. Dustin Hermanson was done for the day, lasting just 3 2/3 innings. But each starter was getting banged up. Despite his 2-run monsterous shot, Kevin Foster lasted only 3 1/3 innings after giving up a run in the 4th. The Syndicate made it a 7-3 game in the 7th on a Cedeno RBI single. Then, in the 8th, the Syndicate went crazy on Springfield, scoring 6 runs in the 8th for a 13-4 lead. The 'Topes tried to make a comeback, and actually made quite a bit of a dent in the lead, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th, and another 2 in the 9th, but it wasn't enough, as the Syndicate won game 3 by a score of 13 to 10. The Syndicate are now 1 game away from the MK conference finals. SYNDICATE LEADS 3-0. In the first, Tino Martinez put the 'Topes up 1-0 on an RBI single. In the third, a Garcia bases loaded wild pitch scored Bernie Williams from 3rd, and Tino Martinez advanced to 3rd from 2nd. Later in the inning, Martinez would score on a fielder's choice. The score was made 4-0 'Topes in the 3rd on a Scott Servais RBI single. But of course, you can't count out the Syndicate just yet. In the 5th, Tony Gwynn got an RBI the hard way .. by getting plunked on the arm with the bases loaded. The next batter, Bill Mueller, helped clear some of the congestion on the base paths by smacking a 2-RBI bases loaded single. The 'Topes lead was now down to just 1, and Francisco Cordova only lasted 4 2/3 innings. But 'Topes relievers Pedro Astacio and Doug Jones combined for 4 1/3 innings of shutout ball, saving the game and the series for the 'Topes by the 4-3 win. SYNDICATE LEADS 3-1. But they won game four, so they went into game five with a little momentum. And Ed Sprague was determined to keep it that way. In the 2nd, Sprague put the 'Topes 2 up on the Syndicate with a 2-run blast. Kevin Stocker made it a 4-0 'Topes game in the 5th on a 2-RBI triple. While the 'Topes were scoring the runs, staff ace Kevin Brown was shutting the Syndicate down. Brown went the distance, allowing only 3 hits and 2 runs, as the 'Topes keep their series hopes alive 5-2 win. SYNDICATE LEADS 3-2. Would there be a game seven? The Syndicate scored first in the first on a Roger Cedeno RBI single. Kevin Stocker put the 'Topes in the lead in the 2nd on a 2-RBI single, followed by Andy Pettitte's fearsome bat which produced an RBI double. 3-1 'Topes. Kevin Stocker drove in another run for the 'Topes in the 4th on an RBI double. Roger Cedeno added an RBI single in the 8th, but the Syndicate simply lost steam for the game (and for the series!)
