What happens when you pit two of the best offenses in the CFOD? Why, a pitcher's duel, of course! It didn't seem that way in the 1st inning for Justin Thompson, who gave up an RBI double to Sandy Alomar Jr. The Wet Sox later scored in the 8th on a Bagwell RBI single. Mike Mussina and closer Roberto Hernandez combined for a 6-hit shutout as Oregon wins game 1 by a score of 2-0. WET SOX LEAD 1-0. In the top of the first, the Syndicate chased Andy Benes for 3 runs, capped off by a 2-run shot by Palmeiro. Benes would last only 2 innings. The Wet Sox put themselves on the board in the 2nd with RBI singles by Lemke and Garciaparra. The Syndicate struck again for 3 runs in the 3rd to make it 6-2 Syndicate. In the 6th, with the score 6-3 in favor of the Syndicate, Mechan had yet another big inning. Kirt Manwaring smacked a 2 RBI single, while Tony Gwynn hit a 2-RBI double. 10-3 Wet Sox. Stephenson ran into trouble in the 6th, when a couple of pinch hitters and Garciaparra touched him for 3 runs. Stephenson lasted 5 1/3 innings, giving up 6 runs. The Wet Sox added another run in the 7th, but it was all they could muster. While the Wet Sox have a potent offense, they simply couldn't overcome a 7 run deficit. The Syndicate win game 2 by a score of 10-7. SERIES TIED 1-1. In the top of the first, Garrett Anderson and Jeff Bagwell each hit solo shots for a 2-0 Oregon lead. With the score 2-1 in the top of the 3rd, Bagwell and Sandy Alomar each had RBI singles to make it a 4-1 game. The Syndicate had a big 4th inning, thanks in part to Nomar Garciaparra. A Garciaparra error allowed a runner on base, and failed to record an out. As it turns out, it was a costly error, as Greg Gagne smacked a 3-run, 2-out dinger to tie things up at 4. Larry Walker gave Oregon the lead again in the 5th on a solo shot, but in the 7th, Roberto Alomar smacked a 2-run dinger to give the Syndicate the 6-5 lead. Nomar Garciaparra tied things up at 6 in the 9th on a solo shot, with the hope that Oregon could win it in extra innings. But in the bottom of the 9th, Tim Bogar hit a 0 out double, which stretched to third base on a throwing error by Brent Brede. You can imagine what happens next. Eddie Perez hit an RBI single, and that was the ballgame. The Syndicate take game 4 by a score of 7 to 6. SERIES TIED 2-2. In the first four innings, every time the Syndicate would score a run, Oregon would score a run in the next inning. With the score tied at 2, in the bottom of the 7th Tony Gwynn hit an RBI double to give the Syndicate the 3-2 lead. The Wet Sox had a big inning in the 8th. Mike Stanton faced a bases loaded situation, and tied things up when he walked Rey Sanchez. A Stanton balk gave Oregon the 4-3 lead. Kevin Jordan broke things open with a 2 RBI single, and in yet another bases loaded situation, a Greg Gagne error caused another run to score to make it a 7-3 Oregon lead. It looks like game five would go Oregon's way. Or would it? The Syndicate were not done yet. In the bottom of the 8th, the Syndicate loaded the bases. Barry Bonds was walked, making it 7-4. With 2 outs and the bases still loaded, Mike Benjamin smacked a double, which cleared the bases and tied things up at 7. Then, with Benjamin and Mueller on base, Rafael Palmeiro banged a 3-run shot to give the Syndicate the 10-7 lead. Oregon couldn't score in the 9th, giving Mechan the win. The Syndicate are now just 1 game away from the CFOD world serise. SYNDICATE LEADS 3-2. In the first, Jeff Bagwell hit a 2 RBI double, and Sandy Alomar hit an RBI double of his own for the 3-0 Oregon lead. The Syndicate added a run in the 4th, but Oregon responded in the bottom of the 4th with 2 more runs for a 5-1 lead. In the 6th, Mechan made their run. Eddie Perez smacked a solo shot, Tony Gwynn hit a sacrifice fly and Palmeiro hit an RBI single to close the game to 5-4 Oregon. But it wasn't enough. Oregon padded their lead in the 8th with 3 more runs (highlighted by a Sandy Alomar bases loaded 2-RBI single), and went on to win game six by a score of 8 to 4. Garciaparra in the 2nd inning with yet another home run, this time a 3-run shot for a 4-0 Wet Sox lead. The Wet Sox added 2 more in the 6th on RBI's by Fryman and Sanchez for a 6-0 Wet Sox lead. The Syndicate would score a few runs in the 8th & 9th innings, but it wasn't enough, as Oregon wins game seven by score of 6-3, and have earned the right to face the Boston Whaleheads for the 1997 CFOD championship. WET SOX WIN SERIES 4-3.
