QUICK PREVIEW: Somerville Sluggers vs. Oregon Wet Sox The Sluggers are 1997 playoff vets, having beaten the Regulators in 6 games. They now face the Oregon Wet Sox, who won the Koufax division pennant. The Wet Sox have several franchise players, with Larry Walker, Jeff Bagwell, Nomar Garciaparra and Sandy Alomar being a "4-man one-man wrecking crew" (!). Wet Sox ace Mike Mussina won 20 games. The Slugger pitching staff has been great in the post-season, with Pat Hentgen and Curt Schilling having a combined 32 innings of 2.25 ERA ball. The Sluggers won the regular season series 7-5. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GAME ONE - Somerville Sluggers (Curt Schilling) at Oregon Wet Sox (Mike Mussina) Lots of errors in this one, and errors on both sides could have (and have) lost the game. With the score at 1-0 Sluggers in the bottom of the 3rd, a Tony Womack error let Mark Lemke score. 1-all. Later in the inning, a Garret Anderson single drove in Nomar Garciaparra. 2-1 Wet Sox, with both Wet Sox runs unearned. We move now to the 8th ining, Bobby Abreu on 2nd, Doug Glanville on 1st, and Eduaro Perez at the plate. Perez singles to left field, Abreu trucks around 3rd, and Glanville trucks around 2nd. Replacement outfielder Ryan McGuire throw to Joe Girardi at home is errant.. so errant, that it sails over his head, and both Abreu and Glanville score. 3-2 Sluggers lead. Perez would later score on a fielder's choice. In all, 6 runs were scored in the game, but only 1 of them was earned. Sluggers win game 1 by a score of 4-2, and take over home field advantage. SLUGGERS LEAD 1-0. Before the first out was recorded, 3 runs had scored, thanks to a 3-run dinger from Larry Walker. The Wet Sox runs kept on running, to a total of 10 for the game. It was way more than needed, as old man Darwin showed he still had some life in him, throwing a complete game 2-hit shutout. WET SOX LEAD 3-1. But they were not going to go down without a fight. In the bottom of the first, Somerville jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The Wet Sox closed the gap to 1 in the 4th off an RBI single from Sandy Alomar Jr. The Sluggers tried to hold the Wet Sox offense at bay, but twas not to be. Bagwell, Alomar and Fryman smacked 1 & 2 & 1 RBI singles in the 6th, a Andrew Jones homer in the 7th, and 2 more in the 8th. The Sluggers scored twice more in the 7th & 8th innings, but it was not enough. The mighty Wet Sox offense won game 5 by a score of 8-4, and clinch the series for the Wet Sox, who advance to the MK conference finals. WET SOX WIN SERIES 4-1.
