1996 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW: Boston Whaleheads (110-52) vs. Brookfield Brouhaha (99-63) (HFA): Likely the marquee series of the first round of the playoffs. The Whaleheads went from triple digit losses to triple digit wins, posting the 2nd best record in CFOD history. The Whaleheads boast the finest 1-8 batting lineup in the league, led by shortstop Alex Rodriguez, centerfielder Ken Griffey Jr. and catcher Todd Hundley. The Whaleheads are also blessed with lots of depth in players like Mike Macfarlane and Jeff King. Jeff Fassero was a true staff ace, and his fine performance was rewarded with a 20-win season. Darryl Kile and Jose Rosado are also decent starters. Roberto Hernandez was a true stopper, finishing with a 2.15 ERA and 31 saves. The Brouhaha became the 2nd expansion team in CFOD history to make the playoffs, clinching their first ever division title. First baseman Edgar Martinez is the marquee player of the bunch, slugging .600+, scoring 128 runs and driving in 112. Name a position and they have an all-CFOD caliber player there. Catcher? All-CFOD Benito Santiago. Shortstop? Acquisition Omar Vizquel. The pitching staff boasts a capable starting staff and a killer bullpen. Orel Hershiser won 18 games on a 4.00 ERA, and McDonald and Lira each won 14. The Brouhaha had 9 relievers with ERA's of 3.12 or lower during the regular season. The hitting for each team is almost dead even, while the Whaleheads enjoyed a slightly lower team ERA. The Whaleheads won the season series 5-2, but each team has changed so much with trades that the series could go either way. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Whaleheads vs. Brouhaha -- 1996 CFOD Playoffs Round 1 GAME ONE -- Whaleheads (Fassero) at Brouhaha (Hershiser). What was advertised as the marquee matchup was just that. Each team struck once in the first inning, with an Alex Rodriguez RBI double and an Edgar Martinez solo shot providing the score. Then, ace starters Jeff Fassero and Orel Hershiser settled down, and neither offense could do anything. We go to the bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, Roberto Hernandez on the mound against pinch hitter Jim Edmonds .. and the pitch is hit hard! It's going back .. back .. Griffey goes to the wall .. leaps .. and catches it! Griffey robs Edmonds of the homer and saves the game for the Whaleheads. We go to extra innings. Each team continues to shut each other down, until the top of the 12th inning. Off Doug Botchler, Alex Rodriguez smacks a 2-RBI double to give the Whaleheads the 3-1 lead. Jay Powell pitched a flawless bottom inning to get the win, as the Whaleheads take home field advantage in the 3-1 win. WHALEHEADS LEAD SERIES 1-0. What a time to have a good game. Mike Hampton, troubled all season with the 'Cudas and the Brouhaha, was given a chance in the playoffs and he came through. Hampton pitched 8 dominant innings, allowing only 5 hits an no earned runs. The Brouhaha broke it open with a 6 run 7th inning, and added a couple more 2-run innings to make it a 10-0 blowout and allowed the Brouhaha to steal back home field advantage. SERIES TIED 1-1. Quite possibly the most exciting playoff game ever to occur in the CFOD. The first few innings were rather calm. In the bottom of the 2nd, Bernard Gilkey singles, is advanced to second base on a fielders choice, and is driven in by a BJ Surhoff single to make it 1-0 Brouhaha. To the 4th, we go. Griffey knocks a ball right at Edgar Martinez, who bobbles it and allows Griffey to reach base on error, which would prove costly. Two batters later, Sammy Sosa knocks the ball out of the park, scoring Griffey to give the Whaleheads the 2-1 lead. Bottom of the 6th, the Brouhaha strike back. The 2-on, 1-out pitch from Jose Rosado to Benito Santiago .. GONE! The Brouhaha take a 4-2 lead. To the second act we go. Top of the 7th, pinch hitter Robby Thompson with the RBI single off Rick Honeycutt to close the lead to 4-3. Honeycutt blows it again, with a Brian McRae RBI single to tie up the game 4-4. Bottom of the 7th, the Brouhaha retake the lead on a 2-RBI double by Dave Martinez off Jay Powell to make it 6-4 Brouhaha. Jeff Cirillo pads the lead in the 8th to make it 7-4. To the top of the 9th we go. Moment of truth time. Season closer Billy Wagner on the mound, in trouble. Bases loaded, 0 outs, facing Brian McRae. WHIFF! McRae strikes out. 1 out, with Alex Rodriguez up .. the pitch .. the hit .. it's going .. going .. GONE! Alex Rodriguez hits a grand slam to give the Whaleheads the 8-7 lead. To the third act. Bottom of the 9th. Game on the line. 2 outs, Craig Grebeck on first, closer Roberto Hernandez facing Edgar Martinez. Martinez was the goat earlier on in the game, and needed to get a hit. And get a hit he did. Martinez tripled, scoring Craig Grebeck and tying up the game 8-8. We would go to extra innings. To the top of the 10th. Heathcliff Slocumb throws two consecutive wild pitches to allow Jeff King to score from second base, almost single-handedly losing the game for the Brouhaha. The Brouhaha offense would have to pull another miracle out of their hats. Bottom of the 10th, Hernandez on the mound, Jeff Cirillo on second, Jim Edmonds on first, 1 out, facing pinch hitter Lee Stevens. Lee Stevens, the guy who was almost drafted by the Coneheads, but had to settle for being a free agent signee. The pitch .. past Stevens .. and past Hundley to rest against the backdrop. Cirillo and Edmonds each advance a base. Would the wild pitch matter? No. Because Lee Stevens, pinch hitter, promptly hits a 3-run, game winning homer, to give the Brouhaha the 11-9 victory in extra innings. BROUHAHA LEAD SERIES 2-1. Oh, nasty, nasty, nasty. That's how the Brouhaha played in game four. The Whaleheads had to be patting themselves on the back on this one. Al Leiter was the pitcher he wasn't during the regular season, throwing a 4-hit, 1-ER, 10 K complete game. The Whalehead batters came alive with a vengence. McRae's leadoff homer would be a sign of things to come. Sosa had a 3-run shot in the 1st. Hundley had a 2-run shot in the 3rd (Lira would last 2 1/3 innings with 6 ER to his discredit). Naehring had a solo shot in the 6th, and Hundley struck *again* in the 7th with another 2-run shot. The Whaleheads tacked on a few more runs, but it was just a case of overkill on this one in the 12-1 drubbing of the Brouaha. SERIES TIED 2-2. A real see-saw battle. Benito Santiago's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first allowed the Brouhaha to put the first run on the board. The Whaleheads scored once in the next two innings to take a quick 2-1 lead, but a Surhoff sac fly in the 4th would tie it up again in the 4th. In the top of the 7th, Alex Rodriguez gave the Whaleheads the lead with an RBI single. Reliever Billy Wagner let another Whalehead run score with a bases loaded walk. The Whaleheads scored again in the 9th, but it was just for insurance, as the Brouhaha couldn't muster any offense. The Whaleheads defeat the Brouhaha 5-2. WHALEHEADS LEAD 3-2. The Brouhaha came out strong right off the bat in game six. Dave Martinez had an RBI double and Gilkey had a 2-run shot in the first to give the Brouhaha the early 3-0 lead. In the top of the 3rd Gilkey struck again, getting an RBI double, and then scoring from 2nd on 2 wild pitches by Kile. This wasn't Kile's day. 3 innings pitched, 8 hits, 5 earned runs. The Brouhaha then matched the Whaleheads run for run for the rest of the game, the outcome never in doubt. One of the more exciting series has an exciting end. Both teams played to the fullest extent of their abilities, although one of them had to come out in front. We start off in the top of the 4th, with Ben McDonald pitching. Todd Hundley singles, with Alex Rodriguez on 2nd. Rodriguez is thinking "to heck with conservatism, this is the playoffs!" and guns it to home.. as does the outfield with the ball .. the play at the plate .. safe! The Whaleheads are first on the board. Two batters later, Carlos Delgado singles Hundley in to make it a 2-0 Whalehead ballgame. In the bottom of the 4th, Jeff Cirillo puts the Brouhaha on the board with a sacrifice fly. After that, both pitching staffs would hunker down. The Brouhaha had to come up with something fast or else their season would end. Through 8 1/2 innings the score remained at 2-1. Closer Roberto Hernandez on the mound for the Whaleheads to clinch the series. First batter in the ninth is Bernard Gilkey .. who walks. No outs, Hernandez facing Jeff Cirillo .. and Hernandez throws to first! Gilkey is caught in a rundown and is tagged out. A blown chance. With 1 out, Jeff Cirillo has a double, in what would probably have scored Bernard Gilkey. Up comes BJ Surhoff .. who flies out. 2 outs, but Surhoff advanced Jeff Cirillo to third base. For the Brouhaha, the season comes down to the last batter: Pinch hitter Dale Sveum. Will getting picked off now be known as pulling a "Gilkey"? Will Sveum pull a Lee Stevens and save the day for the Brouhaha? YES. Sveum comes through when he was needed most with an RBI single, and ties it up. We would go to extra innings. The Whaleheads failed to score in the top of the inning. Would the Brouhaha make the most of their second chance? 0 outs with a runner on base, Hernandez facing Jim Edmonds, who has not had a good series .. until now. Edmonds smashes Hernandez's pitch .. it's going .. going .. GONE! Edmonds wins the game and the series with one swing with a 2-run dinger. The Brouhaha triumph in extra innings in the 7th game of one of the best series ever to be played in the CFOD. BROUHAHA WINS 4-3.
