RY Conference Finals: Rivendell Thunder vs Brookfield Brouhaha. OK, show of hands. Of the 4 teams in the RY conference division playoffs, how many thought that it would end up being these two teams in the finals? Both the Brouhaha and Thunder have managed to defeat teams who posted the two best regular season records in history. The Thunder pulled off the biggest upset in CFOD playoff history (yes, bigger than the '95 Piazza/Conehead clash) in defeating the Coneheads. So far, the Thunder have gotten key performances from several players. MVP Mark McGwire's been hot in the playoffs, with 3 homers, 5 runs, 6 RBI and an amazing 1.319 OPS in 7 games. Otis Nixon has a 0.370 OBA with 6 stolen bases. The Thunder pitching held their ground against the mighty Conehead offense, with a 3.19 team ERA. Starter Kevin Tapani has been hot, with a 1.93 ERA in 14 innings. The Brouhaha are fresh off an impressive 7 game series victory against the Whaleheads. So far the Brouhaha have been the "clutch" team, coming from behind in 2 separate games and winning in extra innings on a last at bat home run. Mike Hampton has been the key so far, winning 2 games with a 1.32 ERA. Dave Martinez has been the batting leader, hitting 0.423 with 6 RBI in 7 games. So who is going to make an appearance in the CFOD world championship series? Your guess is as good as mine. On paper, the Brouhaha are superior to the Thunder in hitting and pitching, but where have we heard that before? The Brouhaha pitching staff is gonna have to shut down McGwire & company, while the Thunder pitching staff is gonna have to keep performing the way they have. Brookfield has HFA. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GAME ONE -- Thunder (Key) at Brouhaha (Hershiser). Can the Thunder magic last against the Brouhaha? Jimmy Key got off to a dubious start, letting Orel Hershiser hit a 2-RBI single in the bottom of the 2nd. The Brouhaha made it 3-0 on a 5th inning Gilkey RBI single. The big inning for the Thunder was in the 7th .. Mark McGwire led things off with a solo shot. But the Thunder's rally was cut short, as Otis Nixon flied out with 2 outs and the bases loaded. Rick Honeycutt pitched 2 2/3 innings to get the save in the 3-1 Brouhaha win. BROUHAHA LEADS 1-0. Just when you think the game is going to go one way, it goes the other. The Brouhaha built up an early lead, thanks to a 1st inning Edgar Martinez solo shot, a 4th inning Jeff Cirillo RBI double and a 6th inning BJ Surhoff single. But the Thunder closed the gap in the bottom of the 6th on a sac fly by Randy Velarde. Then, in the 8th, the bottom fell out for the Brouhaha. With one out and the bases loaded, Billy Wagner walks Randy Velarde to make it a 3-2 game. With one out and the bases loaded, Billy Wagner walks Mark McGwire to tie it up. Would Marquis Grissom walk? No, Marquis would hit .. a 2-RBI single to give the Thunder the 5-3 lead. Wagner's last batter faced? He boinks Keith Lockhart in a bases loaded situation to make it a seemingly insurmountable 6-3 Thunder lead in the bottom of the 8th. The Thunder had to of been feeling pretty good right about now. However, the problems that plagued the Brouhaha in the 8th would plague the Thunder in the top of the 9th. Dave Martinez, RBI triple, 6-4 Thunder lead. Then, Edgar, with an RBI single. 6-5 Thunder lead. Bernard Gilkey, RBI single, score tied at 6. That's all the Brouhaha could do, but it might be good enough to force extra innings. But they had to get through the bottom of the ninth first. And could they do that? NO! Marquis Grissom hits a sac fly, which allows Casey Candaele score from third base to give the Thunder the 7-6 victory and ties up the series. SERIES TIED 1-1. An excellent game by both teams. The Thunder were the first to score in the 2nd, on a Terry Steinbach 2-run tater. Kevin Tapani found himself in a jam quickly in the bottom of the 2nd, letting a runner score with the bases loaded with 0 outs on a wild pitch. But Tapani kept his composure and got out of the inning without any further damage. Top of the third, Otis Nixon on third, 2 outs, McDonald facing McGwire .. but no confrontation would take place, as McGwire is intentionally walked. Apparantly Marquis Grissom is a less fearsome hitter. Grissom's response? An RBI single to give the Thunder the 3-1 lead. A Carreon 2-out, 2-RBI single in the 5th gave the Thunder a formidable 5-1 lead. The Brouhaha would have to do something quick if they were to stay in the game. Enter Lee "1.00 AVG/1.00 OBA/4.00 SLG" Stevens in the bottom of the 6th. Think a second AB would reduce his stats? Nope. Lee Stevens *AGAIN* smacks a 3-run homer, and pulls the Brouhaha back into the game with 5-4 Thunder lead. In the top of the 8th, Otis Nixon does his thing. He singles, steals 2nd, and scores from 2nd on a Wade Boggs single. All too easy, 6-4 Thunder lead. Each team would trade an additional run, but the Brouhaha couldn't pull it through. Dennis Cook pitched the perfect ninth for the save as the Thunder took away home field advantage from the Brouhaha in the 7-5 victory. THUNDER LEADS 2-1. Neither pitcher got off to a good start, as both sides put up some runs. A Dave Martinez RBI double in the first and a Randy Velarde error letting Gilkey score from 2nd in the 2nd inning accounted for the first two Brouhaha runs, while RBI singles by Velarde and Grissom in the first inning accounted for the Thunder runs. In the top of the 6th, Jim Edmonds scored on a fielder's choice to give the Brouhaha the lead. The Brouhaha would score two more times, but they were just for insurance, as the Thunder would not score again. A bases loaded, 2-out groundout by Terry Steinbach facing Turk Wendell was the final out. The Brouhaha have re-taken home field advantage in the 5-2 win. SERIES TIED 2-2. The Brouhaha were looking to advance to their first CFOD world series appearance. The Thunder were looking to advance to a seventh game. Who would get their wish? The Brouhaha got things rolling in a big way. Linton's pitch to Jim Edmonds with a runner on. Good-bye! See Ya! Edmonds smacks a 2-run tater. In the top of the 2nd, Mark Portugal helped out his cause with an RBI single. In the bottom of the 2nd, the Thunder jam up the Brouhaha in a situation. Let's go to the tape: Bases loaded, 0 outs, Portugal facing Linton .. strikes out. 1 out. Portugal facing Nixon, bases loaded...and Nixon uses his speed to get an infield single! A runner scores, 3-1 Brouhaha lead with 1 out. Portugal facing Wade Boggs .. who hits into a DP. Inning over, 1 Thunder run scores. Bottom of the 4th. Portugal facing Keith Lockhart .. you can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him. Lockhart with a solo shot, 3-2 Brouhaha. Santiago adds some insurance in the 6th inning with a 2-run shot to make it a 5-2 lead. The Brouhaha get in another bases loaded jam in the 7th, but escape with only a bases loaded RBI single from Marquis Grissom. The Brouhaha must like playing with fire, as they found themselves in yet *ANOTHER* bases loaded situation in the 8th. Luckily, they get to face Wade Boggs. With 1 out, Boggs hits into another double play to allow the Brouhaha to get out of the inning unharmed. Both teams trade a run in the 9th, and the Brouhaha go on to the 6-4 victory. The Thunder left *11* baserunners on board (at least 6 with Wade Boggs alone), but still had a fine playoff run. The Brouhaha become the first '93 expansion team to make it to the CFOD world championship series. BROUHAHA WINS 4-2.
