NOTES: ..and the '96 season is done! '96 saw the highs (Coneheads' 114 wins), and the lows (Mangos' 119 losses, 5.78 team ERA). The Brouhaha captured their first ever pennent, while the Squids won their first pennent in four years. The Sluggers won their second consecutive pennent, while the Coneheads won their *6th* consecutive pennent. The Whaleheads rose like a phoenix, going from triple losses to triple wins (recording the second highest win mark in history). The Lightning and Thunder each overcame pre-season panning to put in 90+ win seasons and spots in the playoffs. Lance Johnson was the big achiever this year, setting the league record for triples (20), and for the longest known hitting streak in the CFOD (38 games--ending on the very last game). Barry Bonds passed Rickey Henderson in the final week to break the old record (set by Bonds) of walks with an amazing 162. Mark McGwire's thunderous season resulted in a record 48 intentional walks. On the flip side, Melvin Nieves whiffed his way into the record books with a mind-wobbling 190 strikeouts. Tom Glavine was the only individual pitcher of note, tying the league record for shutouts with 8. Several team records fell as well. The Climbers' took advantage of Coors field to break or tie records in OBA, SLG, runs, and RBI. The Brouhaha broke the old doubles record with 363. On the other side, the slugger heavy Lightning broke the record for fewest team triples with 14, and the Whaleheads generated a lot of breeze in '96, coming up with a record 1,326 strikeouts. The good teams got better in '96, and the bad teams got even worse. The Coneheads broke their own record for most wins by a team with 114, while the Mangos rode a league record high 5.78 team ERA (no Coors, either!) on their way to a horrid 119 losses. The Slugger staff put in lots of overtime, setting a new record for innings with 1492 2/3. Finally, the reliever-heavy Syndicate and the woeful Barracudas tied the league low water mark for fewest complete games with 1.
