MK Conference Finals: Somerville Sluggers vs Charlottesville Squids. Ahhh, a traditional finals. Two teams that have been very successful in the history of the CFOD and two teams that won the pennant in their division. There's also a tradition of these two teams meeting in the playoffs: The Sluggers defeated the Squids 4 games to 1 in the semi-final of the MK playoffs in 1993 on their way to a CFOD championship series appearance. The '93 battle between the Sluggers and Squids was also last time the Squids made the playoffs. Shortly after their playoff loss, the Squids underwent a massive makeover, both with new office management and a new shift in player focus. It took 2 full seasons for the Squids to rebuild, but they've come back, winning their division and their first round playoff series against the Lightning. The Squids effectively gave up Chipper Jones + a whole lot more for firstbaseman John Jaha, but he's been worth it, with a superior regular season performance, and a 4 homer, 10 RBI, 0.917 slugging performance so far in the playoffs. He's joined by Juan Gonzalez (11 RBI), Gary Sheffield, Jose Offerman, Brady Anderson and a whole slew of other high potent hitters. Staff ace Juan Guzman has been unstoppable, throwing 17 innings of shutout ball. The Sluggers had trouble securing a playoff spot during the regular season, but they had no trouble knocking off the Reservoir Dogs. The post-season Slugger hitting attack has been a diverse one. Catcher John Flaherty has shown surprising power, with 3 homers and a 0.933 slugging average, while predictable slugger Geronimo Berroa has 2 homers in 5 games. Barry Larkin has a 0.391 OBA and 5 steals, while Rickey Henderson has a 0.524 OBA and 3 steals. The Slugger pitching had problems with the Dogs, posting a 4.80 ERA. A high point is Curt Schilling, who has a 2.51 ERA in 14 1/3 innings. The Squids had a slight edge in the regular season with a 4-3 record against the Sluggers, but both teams have showed up for the playoffs. Expect a long and hard fought series. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GAME ONE -- Sluggers (Schilling) at Squids (Guzman). What was first a pitcher's duel then turned into a display of clutch hitting. Both Schilling and Guzman were nearly unstoppable in the first half of the game. Through 6 innings the Sluggers managed 3 hits, while the Squids only had 4. Then the starters showed signs of getting tired. The Sluggers put the first run on the board in the 7th with a Gary Gaetti RBI single. The Squids took over the lead in the bottom of the 7th on consecutive RBI singles by Offerman and Girardi. The Sluggers retook the lead in the 8th on a solo shot by Rickey Henderson and Juan Guzman throwing 2 wild pitches in a row to allow Knoblauch to score from second (that was it for Guzman). In the bottom of the 8th, the Squids tied it up at 3 on a John Jaha solo shot. Neither teams could make anything happen in the ninth, so we would go to extra innings. In the top of the 11th, the Sluggers made a play for the win. Mark Grace hit a 0 out double to put him in scoring position. Chuck Knoblauch sacrifice bunted Grace over to third, and a Larkin sac fly gave the Sluggers the 4-3 lead. The Squids would have to do something in the bottom of the 11th. The Squids kept the game alive when Stan Javier singled in Gruzielanek to make it a 4-4 game with 0 outs. Joe Girardi sac bunted Javier over to third. All they would need is a sac fly and the game would end. But that wouldn't happen. Instead, Dan Plesac would help load the bases, but no one had scored. Huck Flender came on with 2 outs, to face Juan Gonzales. Think Juan is gonna pull it out of the bag? You betcha. Gonzalez wins the game in style, with a grand slam home run to give the Squids the opening victory over the Sluggers, 8-4. SQUIDS LEAD 1-0. Chuck Nagy put in a fine performance, giving up a single run in his last third of an inning (which happened to be 1 out away from a complete game shutout). Squids in a blowout, 7-1. SQUIDS LEAD 2-0. This was a tale of two games. The first half was one of offense. The Sluggers scored 5 runs in 6 innings on a Larkin RBI single, McGee bases loaded 2-rbi single, an RBI double by McGee and an RBI single by Wakefield. The Squids scored 5 runs in 5 innings on solo shots by Anderson, Girardi and a 3-run shot by Jaha. The second half was one of pitching and missed opportunities. In the bottom of the 8th, Brady Anderson singled with Sheffield on first. Sheffield tried to stretch it to third base, but was gunned down by Berroa. With 2 outs, Anderson tried to steal 2nd, but was thrown out to end the inning. Neither team did anything in the 9th, and with a 5-5 tie, it would go to extra innings .. many, many extra innings. Neither team could score a run until the *15th* inning. The Sluggers scored first on a Grace RBI single off Steve Avery. But the Squids answered in the bottom half, with a 2-out solo shot by Gary Sheffield off Huck "Goat" Flener. The next run would be scored by the Sluggers in the top of the 17th, on a RBI double by Mark Grace off Archie Corbin (the *8th* Squid pitcher of the day). Could the Sluggers keep the lead that they blew in the 15th? In a word, no. The 6th Slugger pitcher of the day, Bryce Florie, with 2 outs, intentionally walks John Jaha to load the bases to face Archie Corbin. Easy out, right? But Corbin didn't get a chance to swing, as Florie throws the ball away to let the winning run score from third as the Squids prevail over the Sluggers in a long 8-7 battle. SQUIDS LEAD 3-0. Just when you thought it was going one way, it went the other. The Squids demolished the Sluggers through most of the game. Juan Gonzalez was a human wrecking machine, with an RBI double in the first, 2-RBI tater in the 3rd and a 2-RBI homer in the 6th, at which time would make it an *8-1* Squid lead. Think the Squids are starting to celebrate their return to the world series? Me too. Too bad there was 3 more innings to play. The Squids had a *7* run lead. They let Berroa hit an RBI double in the bottom of the 6th to make it 8-2. Fine. Then in the 7th, the Sluggers put up three more runs to make it 8-5. OK, the win won't be as impressive, but it still will be a win. But the Slugger runs kept coming. With the score 8-6 in the 8th, John Wetteland is on to try and stop the bleeding .. but the gasher comes in the form of a 3-run Barry Larkin home run to give the Sluggers the 9-8 lead. The Squids couldn't put anything up after the 6th inning, and the Sluggers pull out the impressive come from behind 9-8 win to keep alive in the playoffs. SQUIDS LEAD 3-1. Down 3-0 at one point in the series, the Sluggers are trying to make a spectacular comeback, not unlike the old Hulk Hogan "let the opponent beat on me for awhile before I kick the snot out of him" trick. Will they make it 2 wins in a row? The Sluggers scored first, in the first, with an RBI single by Chuck Knoblauch. The Squids (who are still trying to clinch the series, by the way), took over the lead in the bottom of the first on a Brady Anderson 2-run shot. Barry Larkin ties it up in the 4th with a solo shot. Then, "it" happened. Al Martin doubles. The next batter puts the ball into play, and Al Martin runs to third. Gary Sheffield attempts to throw him out, and throws the ball over Seitzer's head. Martin scores, 3-2 Slugger lead. Then, "it" happened again in the 6th. Chuck Knoblauch tries to steal 2nd .. Girardi tries to prevent that from happening, but throws the ball into the outfield instead, and Knoblauch advances to third. He later scores on a Larkin double. 4-2 Sluggers. Normally such large lapses in defense would be overpowered by the big bats of the Squids, but not today. They scored only once more to throw away their 2nd game in a row in a 4-3 loss to the Sluggers. SQUIDS LEAD SERIES 3-2. For the Squids, playtime is over. Once up 3-0 in the series, the Sluggers have battled back with two hard fought victories. Still, the Sluggers are 1 game away from elimination, and are only halfway there for them to win the series. Will they get through in game six? The Squids got off to a quick start. Juan Gonzalez, who has *13* RBI in 5 games against the Sluggers, put some runs on the board in the first with a 2-RBI double. The Sluggers were playing sluggish. Their first score was in the bottom of the 4th with a Barry Larkin sac fly (that's the only contact he could make .. he was 0 for 0 with 3 walks). Both starters pitched similar performances, and neither would get the decision. It would go to the reliever corps. And, much like the past couple of games, the Squid bullpen failed to meet expectations. In the bottom of the 7th, Mel Rojas gggg'hs against Gary Gaetti, giving up the 2 run go ahead shot to make it 3-2 Sluggers. The Sluggers would make it an even bigger lead in the 8th off closer John Wetteland. Knoblauch hits an RBI double, but Al Martin does the big damage, smacking a 3-run bases loaded RBI double to make it a commanding 7-2 lead. All of the Squid energy was spent in the first inning, as they would not score for the rest of the game. What was once a comfortable 3-0 lead has now been squandered away into a sudden death, winner take all game 7 at the Squid home base. SERIES TIED 3-3. An entire season for two teams boils down to a single game. Both pennant winners, both trying to make it back to the CFOD world series. The Sluggers struck first in the first, on a Grace triple and a Larkin sacrifice fly. The Squids returned the favor in the bottom of the inning, with a Girardi RBI single and a 2-run shot by Brady Anderson. Fast forward to the top of the 5th, in a 5-2 Squid game. Henderson knocks the ball towards Grudzielanek, who has had a terrible fielding performance in the playoffs. And he boots it. 14 games, *9* errors. The Sluggers make Grudz pay. Flaherty scores on a fielder's choice in what would have been the final out of the inning without the error. Knoblauch adds insult to injury with an RBI single. 5-4 Squid lead. Grudz tries to make it up in the bottom of the 5th, doubling and scoring on a Offerman single to give the Squids a 2-run lead. In the top of the 7th, Rickey Henderson sac flys to shrink the lead to 1. With John Wetteland pitching, Barry Larkin ties it up at 6-all with an RBI double. 6 Slugger runs, but 2 of them solely as a result of Grudz' error. Bad fielding and shaky relief pitching have haunted the Squids. With the score tied at 6, for the 8th & 9th innings the Squids would have to depend on one man: regular season 5th starter and playoff dog-housed lefty hurler Steve Avery. Would Avery shine where Rojas and Wetteland failed? You betcha. Avery's line for the day: 2 innings, 9 batters faced, 3 hits, *0* runs allowed, earned or unearned. So with Avery pulling through for the Squids, they found themselves with an opportunity to win it in the bottom of the 9th. The Squids got off to a good start. Pinch hitter Stan Javier puts the Squids in a very good position with a 0-out double off Huck Flener. On comes Chris Peters to try to get the Sluggers into extra innings. Peters walks Seitzer to face Mark Grudzielanek. Grudz has nearly lost the series with his glove. Would he win it with a hit? YES. Grudz singles, and Stan Javier scores from second for the 7th game 7-6 Squid victory. The Squids advance to the CFOD world championship series for the first time since '92.
