Below are the selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd all-CFOD teams. Each player was evaluated at the position at which he played most (with LF/RF being consolidated into an OF position, and CF being elligible for OF as well). Here are the formulas used to evaluate each player: Hitting value: (OBP+SBSLG)*(AB+BB)*.025+(RBI+R)*.09 Pitching value: 2.6*(wins/4.2+saves/4.2+innings/100*(4.297/ERA+1.409/WHIP)) FIRST TEAM ALL-CFOD P Team NAME AVG OBP SBSLG VAL G AB R RBI BB 1B Coneheads Thomas,F 0.367 0.457 0.653 42.57 148 577 128 138 94 2B Syndicate Alomar 0.327 0.395 0.544 36.59 160 669 125 88 73 SS Whaleheads Rodriguez 0.349 0.401 0.615 41.03 162 670 142 109 56 3B Coneheads Thome 0.333 0.461 0.691 41.27 151 514 110 146 119 C Whaleheads Hundley 0.321 0.391 0.695 34.25 127 476 93 127 56 CF Syndicate Bonds 0.289 0.446 0.570 40.74 162 567 128 119 162 OF Rock Burks 0.342 0.399 0.661 41.27 162 638 115 138 60 OF Moshers Belle 0.295 0.406 0.628 40.30 162 596 117 129 107 PO Team NAME ERA WHIP VAL W L S IP H BB K SP Coneheads Glavine 2.87 1.15 34.57 24 5 0 278.2 233 86 229 SP Coneheads Fernandez 3.15 1.12 31.14 22 7 0 257.0 215 73 190 SP Coneheads Smoltz 2.93 1.09 30.03 19 8 0 254.2 218 58 293 SP Whaleheads Fassero 2.84 1.16 29.70 20 6 0 244.1 232 51 244 SP Moshers Maddux 3.22 1.03 28.30 16 11 0 262.2 240 31 191 RP Dogs Rivera,M 0.80 0.87 48.38 7 2 35 123.1 76 31 146 RP Rock Brantley 3.28 1.17 30.65 6 10 36 71.1 67 16 72 RP Squids/SFS Wetteland 3.27 1.35 29.75 4 4 37 71.2 68 28 86 RP Whaleheads Hernandez 2.15 1.50 29.25 7 5 31 75.1 69 44 80 RP Topes Wohlers 3.08 1.11 28.18 7 6 30 76.0 67 17 96 NOTES: Mariano Rivera was golden in '96, putting in one of the finest seasons ever recorded by a reliever. His 0.80 ERA and 0.87 WHIP ratio almost guaranteed that if he was pitching with a lead, the Dogs would go on to win. The Coneheads had a virtual monopoly on ace starters this year, with their top three starters, Glavine, Alex Fernandez and John Smoltz taking the top three spots. Division rival Boston Whaleheads had their ace starter, Jeff Fassero, in the all-CFOD first team as well. Greg Maddux had a mediocre season by his standards, but even that was good enough to place him on the first team. On the batting side, it was the Coneheads, Whaleheads and Syndicate show, with 2 starters each. Frank Thomas was stellar as usual, Barry Bonds broke records, and Alex Rodriguez put in possibly the best season ever by a shorstop. Despite having Darren Lewis and Delino Deshields as leadoff men for half the season Albert Belle took it up a notch to secure a 1st team selection. 2ND TEAM ALL-CFOD P Team NAME AVG OBP SBSLG VAL G AB R RBI BB 1B Thunder McGwire 0.278 0.443 0.674 40.40 138 475 116 143 137 2B Sluggers Knoblauch 0.294 0.393 0.469 36.08 162 639 126 100 91 SS Sluggers Larkin 0.276 0.385 0.561 34.39 146 533 104 112 99 3B Climbers Caminiti 0.280 0.382 0.538 36.18 143 560 110 126 90 C Coneheads Piazza 0.302 0.373 0.490 28.92 139 533 80 99 61 CF Squids Anderson 0.281 0.388 0.591 38.47 162 601 118 124 81 OF Squids Sheffield 0.274 0.427 0.521 38.50 162 583 127 110 141 OF Squids Gonzalez 0.303 0.334 0.612 38.33 148 631 103 150 27 PO Team NAME ERA WHIP VAL W L S IP H BB K SP Regulators Clemens 3.26 1.30 26.65 18 10 0 248.1 225 97 263 SP Dogs Reynolds 3.19 1.09 25.41 17 13 0 217.1 208 29 201 SP Brouhaha Hershiser 4.00 1.30 23.90 18 8 0 227.0 242 52 132 SP Whaleheads Rodriguez 3.83 1.34 23.82 19 7 0 213.2 217 68 105 SP Sluggers Schilling 3.33 1.05 23.53 15 5 0 208.0 182 36 235 RP Regulators Myers,Ra 2.03 1.13 27.71 8 4 28 62.0 53 17 83 RP Wet Sox Nen 1.84 1.10 27.14 7 3 28 58.2 40 24 57 RP Brewins Hoffman 1.64 0.90 26.84 5 4 22 93.1 59 25 119 RP Lightning Trombley 4.01 1.39 25.17 6 5 28 76.1 86 20 64 RP Coneheads Orosco 2.03 1.24 24.43 3 5 28 62.0 54 23 69 NOTES: Several teams had combos on the 2nd team all-CFOD. Bobby Bonilla was on the lame duck Moshers in the 2nd half, but still was able to have enough momentum to make the team. Despite a crummy 4.80 ERA, Mark Leiter was able to make the last spot thanks in large part to his 18 wins.
