CFOD PLAYOFFS - SOMERVILLE SLUGGERS VS BOSTON BREWINS

BACKGROUND INFO:  The Somerville Sluggers and Boston Brewins were neck and
neck throughout the regular season, and ended up tied for first in the
Koufax division with a record of 92-70.  The Brewins are led by the speed
of Delino Deshields and the big bat of Bobby Bonilla, as well as stud
pitchers Jack McDowell and Pedro Astacio.  The Sluggers boast a marquee
batting lineup, with Marquis Grissom, Barry Larkin, Rick Wilkins, Chuck
Knoblauch and Mark Grace all putting up heavy numbers.  The Sluggers  won
the season series against the Brewins 7 games to 5.  Home field advantage
for the playoffs was determined by random numbers, and the Brewins ended
up with home field advantage.

PLAYOFF RESULTS:

GAME ONE - Sluggers at Brewins, Hill vs McDowell

Game one of the battle went to the Brewins, who did their damage in the
3rd.  Jack McDowell was the first person to score in the playoffs, doing
so on a Gutierrez single.  Bonilla's double and Joyner's single also
drove in runs in the 3rd.  The Brewins put up some insurance runs in the
8th, but it wasn't necessary as McDowell pitched a 4-hit shutout.

GAME TWO - Brewins at Sluggers, Greene vs Schilling.

Archie Cianfrocco scored the first run for the brewins with his 5th
inning tater.  The Sluggers came back with 2 in the bottom of the 5th to
take a 2-1 lead.  The Brewins evened the score in the 7th with a Jeff
Conine tater.  The score was tied until the bottom of the 9th.  Mike Jackson
vs Barry Larkin, bases loaded.  Back-back-back-back-back-back-GONE!  A
9th inning grand slam to end the game!  Sluggers win it 6-2, and evens
the series 1-1.

GAME THREE - Sluggers at Brewins, Kamienecki vs Astacio

The Sluggers wasted no time in scoring with a 2 run first inning.  In the
2nd Devon White evened it up with a 2-run tater.  The Sluggers struck back
with a 3-run 4th, topped by a Mark Grace double.  A Bonilla homer in the
bottom of the 4th made it 5-3 Sluggers.  But this was as far as the Brewins
could go, as the Sluggers added 2 more to their lead to win it 7-3.  
Kamienecki pitched a complete game, and the Sluggers lead the series 2-1.

GAME FOUR - Brewins at Sluggers, Hickerson vs Wickman

The first two innings were an almost mirror image of game three.  The
Sluggers scored in the 1st by a 2-run tater by Shaeffer.  The Brewins
nickel and dimed their way back in the 2nd inning to tie it up.  In the
5th, Shaeffer was once again the hero, singling in a run.  In the 7th,
Shaeffer wasn't finished, driving in yet another run in a 2 run 7th
inning.  The Brewins were in range by scoring 1 in the 8th, but Greg
McMichael came on for the sluggers and shut them down.  The Sluggers
won 5-3 to take a commanding 3-1 series lead.

GAME FIVE - Sluggers at Brewins, Hill vs McDowell

Game five was a pitcher's duel between the two staff aces.  Through
9 innings, each team could only muster up one run.  Then, in the 11th,
it all broke loose for the Brewins.  Grace scored on a single by Wilkins
off of Brewin closer Trevor Hoffman, and this spurred on a 4 run 11th.  
The Brewins couldn't make a comeback in the bottom of the 11th, and the
Sluggers defeated the Brewins 5-1 to win the series, 4 games to 1.  

The Sluggers will now face the Squids, and as the representative of the
Koufax conference the Sluggers have home field advantage.
