CFOD WORLD SERIES - SOMERVILLE SLUGGERS VS CALIFORNIA CONEHEADS

BACKGROUND INFO:  It has been a long road for the Somerville Sluggers.  A
season-ending tie with the Boston Brewins required them to play a playoff
series just to determine who would be the representative for the Koufax
division.  Despite losing home field advantage, the Sluggers came back,
and defeated the Brewins.  Next up was the Monterey Squids, who were
quicky dispatched.  The MK conference final was a close one with the
Mechan Syndicate, but the Sluggers prevailed in a thrilling seven game
series.
    For the California Coneheads, success is nothing new.  The Coneheads
have won every single CFOD world series since the league's inception in the
1991 season.  This year, they once again had the best regular season record
and were the favorites to three-peat.  Their first playoff game was against
the Seattle Moshers.  The Conehead's first game crunching of the Moshers,  
with Greg Maddux at the helm, set the tone for the series as the Coneheads
rolled them over in five games.  
     And so the 1993 CFOD world series begins, with the Somerville Sluggers 
facing the California Coneheads.  The Coneheads had a 3-1 regular season
edge, but the Sluggers are not new to beating the odds.

GAME ONE - Sluggers at Coneheads, Hill vs Smoltz

The Coneheads scored first in the world series, with Piazza driving in 
a run with his first inning double.  A Plantier SF would make it 2-0 in
the first.  The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the 5th, when
O'Neill had an RBI double, Piazza a sacrifice fly, and Plantier having
a 2 run tater to make it 6-0.  Hill would only last 5 1/3 innings.  The
Coneheads added another run for insurance in the 8th, but it really wasn't
necessary, as John Smoltz pitched a gem of a game with a 6-hit shutout as
the Coneheads took game 1, 7-0.

GAME TWO - Coneheads vs Sluggers, Langston vs Schilling

The playoffs have not been good to Mark Langston, who was the regular season
leader in victories.  In the first inning Chuck Knoblauch scored the first
Slugger run of the series.  In the 4th the Sluggers struck again, with 
Grissom tripling and being singled in by Frazier.  The Coneheads evened
it up the next inning with a 2-run double.  With the score tied 2-2 in
the 7th, Mark Grace hit a 2-run single with 2 outs.  Greg McMichael came
on in the 9th and struck out the side to give the Sluggers a 4-2 victory
and tied up the series at 1 game each.

GAME THREE - Sluggers at Coneheads, Kamienecki vs Moyer

This game, one between each team's 3rd starter, would turn out to be
a pitcher's duel.  The Sluggers scored first on a Mark Grace RBI double.
But Moyer settled in and shut the Sluggers down the rest of the way.  
A HoJo single and a Dykstra doubler in the 3rd would give the Coneheads
a 2-1 lead, and Moyer helped his cause in the 7th by scoring on a throwing
error by Diaz.  Howell came on in the 9th for the Coneheads to get his
2nd playoff save as the Coneheads edged the Sluggers 3-1 to take a 2-1
game lead.

GAME FOUR - Coneheads at Sluggers, Quantrill vs Wickman

Chuck Knoblauch, the playoff leader in runs, did it again in the first
inning for the Sluggers, scoring on a Larkin single.  The Sluggers scored
twice again in the 3rd on a 3-run tater by Rick Wilkins.  The Coneheads
put up their first run of the game in the 4th on a Trammell RBI single.
The Sluggers made it 4-1 in the 4th on a Wicman RBI double.  The Coneheads
scored in the next two innings to cut the lead to 4-3.  In the, facing
a loss, the Coneheads pulled though, with pinch runner Jim Thome scoring
on an O'Neill groundout.  With the score tied through nine, the game would
go to extra innings.  In the 11th, the Coneheads scored again, with a
score by Thomas after Dykstra narrowly beat out the throw to first.  The
Sluggers couldn't match in the bottom of the 11th, and the Coneheads won
to take a commanding 3-1 series lead.

GAME FIVE - Sluggers at Coneheads, Hill vs Smoltz

Game five was quite possibly the most exciting game of the entire
playoffs.  The Sluggers scored in the first, with Knoblauch scoring
when Smoltz hit Javier with the ball in a bases loaded situation.  In
the 2nd, the Sluggers scored twice more on a Wilkins RBI single and a
wild pitch by Smoltz.  The Coneheads cut the score to 2-1 in the 2nd on
a Piazza homer.  In the fourth, the Sluggers pulled ahead even further
with a rare homer by Knoblauch.  In the bottom of the 4th, the Coneheads
made the game interesting with a grand slam by Whitaker, which propelled
the Coneheads from 3 down to 1 up.  In the 7th, Grissom tied it up 5-5
with an RBI single and Larkin singled in Grissom to take the lead.  In
the bottom of the 7th Plantier had an RBI single to tie it up at 6-6.
In the 8th, Shawn Boskie had a wild pitch for the Coneheads to allow
a slugger runner to score, making it 7-6 Sluggers.  In the bottom of the
8th, Whitaker singled in a run to make it 7-7, and Paul O'Neill singled
in another run to make it 8-7 Coneheads.  In the 9th inning, faced with
a series loss, the Sluggers pulled through in the clutch, with Bo Jackson
hitting a 2-run single off of Boskie to take a 9-8 lead.  Greg McMichael
came on in the 9th for the Sluggers and shut the Coneheads down, giving
the win to the Sluggers.  The Coneheads still had a 3-2 series lead.

GAME SIX - Coneheads vs Sluggers, Langston vs Schilling

This has not been a good playoff run for Mark Langston.  How ironic it
was for him to be pitching this game.  The Coneheads exploded in the first
on a 2-RBI single by O'Neill, O'Neill scoring on a fielder's choice, and
Schilling's  wild pitch made it a 4-run inning for the Coneheads.  The
Coneheads struck again in the 3rd on a 3-run blast by Trammell.  This
was not Curt Schillings day, who only lasted 2 1/3 innings.  The Coneheads
struck again in the 5th on a homer by Piazza, making it 8-0.  The
Sluggers tried to make it interesting in the bottom of the fifth, with
a Frazier homer and a Larkin RBI-single making the score 8-2.  The Conehead's
attack wasn't finished yet.  Plantier sac fly'd a run in the 6th, and
Dykstra scored in the 8th on a Thomas single.  The Sluggers scored in
the 8th on a Shaeffer single to make the score 10-3.  With 2-outs in the
bottom of the ninth, the Sluggers down by 7, Chuck Knoblauch faced David
West.  Knoblauch fly'd out to Dykstra, and the game, the series, the playoffs,
and the 1993 season was officially over.  Mark Langston's only victory in
the playoffs would prove to be the one that made the California Coneheads
the 1993 CFOD champions, winning the world series 4 games to 2.
