2024 CFOD Playoffs 2024 CFOD World Series Arlington Arthropods (98-64, Mantle Division Winner, 4-1 over Pirates in Round 1, 4-3 over Rock in MK Conf Finals) vs. San Mateo Thunder (107-55, Young Division Winner, 4-1 over Mangos in Round 1, 4-3 over Climbers in RY Conf Finals) The Arthropods won their 3rd Mantle division title in 4 years, bested the Pirates in 5 in their round 1 series then upset the Rock in 7 games to reach their first CFOD World Series since 2021. Taylor Ward hit .276 with 2 home runs, 4 runs scored and 4 RBI in the conference finals. CJ Abrhams had a .345 on base percentage and 5 runs scored, while Jordan Westburg hit .308 with 2 home runs and 4 runs scored. Despite hitting .167 Shohei Ohtani led the team in RBI with 6. Kevin Gausman went 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA in 2 starts, and Role Ragans had a 3.38 ERA in 2 starts with no decisions. Sean Burke, Jeremiah Estrada and David Robertson combined to throw 12 innings of shutout relief with a 2-0 record. The Thunder had the best record at the all-star break, the best record at the end of the season and won the Young division for the first time since 2021. They defeated the Mangos in 5 games in round 1, then battled the Climbers for 7 games in the RY Conference Finals before ultimately winning, advancing to the CFOD World Series for the first time since 2019 (in World Series contests they are 4-2). Aaron Judge hit .360 with 3 home runs, 7 runs scored and 8 RBI, while Bryce Harper hit .269 with a home run and 8 runs scored. Ketel Marte hit .320 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI. Jose Berrios went 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 2 starts, and Nick Lodolo went 2-0 in 2 starts with a 2.02 ERA. Lucas Ereg appeared in 5 games, throwing 5 2/3 innongs of relief with a 1.59 ERA, and Griffin Jax saved 2 games wtih a 3.00 ERA. In 4 regular season contests, the teams battled to a 2-2 tie. San Mateo has home field advantage due to their higher seeding status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Arthropods (Webb) at Thunder (Glasnow). In thet opening game of the last series of the season, the Thunder were the first team to score when in the 2nd, Ketel Marte singled, stole second and scored on a base hit from Josh Smith. Bryson Stott singled, moving Smith to third. Pete Crow-Armstrong doubled, scoring Smith for a 2-0 San Mateo lead. Elias Diaz followed up with a ground out, scoring Stott to make it 3-0 Thunder after 2 innings. The Thunder added an insurance run in the 4th with a solo home run from Crow-Armstrong and another run in the 5th on a Stott sacrifice fly. 5-0 Thunder after 5. Logan Webb allowed his first run of the game in the 6th inning when Shohei Ohtani doubled, moved to third on a balk and scored on a ground out from Alex Bregman. But that would be the closest Arlington would get. The Thunder wins the opening game of the 2024 CFOD World Series by a score of 5-1. Arlington got off to a quick start in the first when Willy Adames hit a leadoff home run. In the 2nd, Trent Grisham hit a leadoff home run to put Arlington up 2-0. In the bottom of the 5th with 2 outs, Bryan Reynolds singled. Bryston Stott singled, putting 2 runners on. Dansby Swanson singled, scoring Reynolds for a 1-run Arthropods lead. With 2 outs and runners at the corners, Aaron Judge smacked a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall. 3-run blast, and the Thunder jumped ahead to a 4-2 lead. The Thunder added 2 more runs in the 6th on a 2-run homer from Jacob Stallings. 6-2 Thunder after 6. Ben Brown started the 9th for the Thunder with a 4-run lead. After walking pinch hitter CJ Abrams, Brown was replaced by closer Griffin Jax. Jax proceeded to mow down the side, recording 3 straight strikeouts. San Mateo wins game 2 by a score of 6-2 to take a 2-0 lead back to Arlington. In the bottom of the 4th, Taylor Ward singled and moved to third on a base hit from Willi Castro. Tobias Myers balked, scoring Ward. Ivan Herrera singled, scoring Castro to tie the game up at 3 after 4 innings. In the top of the 5th, San Mateo pulled ahead with a solo home run from Aaron Judge. Arlington tied it right back up in the bottom of the inning with a matching solo home run from Jordan Westburg. 4-4 game after 5 innings. In the top of the 6th, Ketel Marte singled, and Josh Smith singled. The speedy Marte scored from first, chasing Luis Castillo from the game. Bryson Stott grounded out, advancing Smith 90 feet.
