2021 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 1 Port Huron Hubris (100-62, MK Conference Wildcard) vs. Cincinnati Rock (104-58, Koufax Division Winner) The Hubris had a very successful regular season, winning 100 games and clinching the Mantle/Koufax Conference Wildcard. Marcus Semien hit 37 home runs with 102 runs scored and 107 RBI, while Joey Gallo hit 48 home runs with 94 runs scored and 105 RBI. Adam Duvall smacked 42 home runs with 73 runs scored and 102 RBI. Jonathan Schoop contributed 27 home runs, 76 runs scored and 78 RBI. Charlie Morton went 16-6 with a 2.88 ERA, and Tyler Alexander went 10-1 with a 2.86 ERA. John Means won 13 games with a 2.93 ERA. Closer Andrew Kittredge saved 29 games and won another 8 in relief. The Rock cruised comfortably to 104 wins and the Koufax Division Pennant. Kyle Tucker hit .275 wtih 44 home runs, 106 runs scored and 106 RBI, and Rafael Devers hit .300 with 44 home runs, 91 runs scored and 103 RBI in just 437 at bats. Jared Walsh hit .312 with 24 home runs and 75 RBI in 404 at bats. Starling Marte hit .292 with 58 stolen bases and 84 runs scored. Pitching was Cincinnati's strong suit, posting a league best 3.31 team ERA. Gerrit Cole won a league leading 20 games with a league leading 297 strikeouts, while teammate Freddy Peralta went 15-4 with a league leading 2.11 ERA. Brandon Woodruff went 14-7 with a 2.87 ERA. Closer Blake Treinen saved 29 games with a 1.64 ERA. In 9 regular season games, the Rock held the season advantage 7 games to 2. The Rock have home field advantage due to their pennant winning status. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Hubris (Morton) at Rock (Woodruff). With both starters throwing smoke the first 3 innings, it wasn't until the bottom of the 4th where the first run of the game was scored. In the 4th, Kyle Tucker singled, stole second and scored on a base hit from Rafael Devers. In the bottom of the 6th, Tucker and Startling Marte hit back to back solo home runs to put Cincinnati up 3-0. Brandon Woodruff was pitching a shutout heading into the top of the 7th inning. First batter up, Adam Duvall, struck out. Joey Gallo got a walk. Jonathan Schoop struck out for the 2nd out of the inning. Omar Narvaeoz singled. Pinch hitter Thairo Estrada walked, loading the bases. With 2 outs, pinch hitter Luis Roberts walked, forcing in a run. 3-1 Rock, and Woodruff was done for the day. On came reliever Brooks Raley. Joey Wendle greeted the new pitcher with a single, scoring 2 runners. Pinch hitter Ryan Zimmerman then went yard. 3-run blast, and the Hubris were up 6-3, with all runs happening with 2 outs in the 7th. The Rock closed the lead to 2 with a Jared Walsh solo home run in the 7th. The Hubris extended their lead back to 3 in the top of the 9th with an RBI double from Wendle. The Hubris pitched a scoreless bottom of the inning for the win. A big 7th inning proves to be the key as the Hubris take game 1 by a score of 7-4. In the bottom of the 9th, Means was working on a 1-hit shutout. Rafael Devers flied out and Jean Segura grounded out to put 2 outs on the board. Yandy Diaz smoked a grounder to Max Schrock, who bobbled it. Error to the first baseman, and the game would continue. Kyle Tucker walked, putting 2 on with 2 outs. Means was done for the day, and Drew Steckenrider came on relief with the tying run to the plate in the form of Starling Marte. Marte hit an 0-1 pitch to center field, where Luis Robert was waiting to catch it for the final out. The Hubris were certainly feeling some Hubris, up 2-0 in the series and starting the games at home. Cincinnati star Gerrit Cole had an uncharacteristically poor showing, giving up 5 runs over the first 4 innings. In the top of the 6th with the Rock down 5-0, Kyle Farmer started the inning with a walk. Zack Collins doubled, moving Farmer to 3rd. With 1 out, Kyle Tucker hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Farmer to cut the lead to 4. After Starling Marte walked, Rafael Devers doubled, scoring 2 runners. Jesse Winker homered. Just like that, the game was tied up at 5. In the bottom of the 7th, Omar Narvaez hit a solo home run off of Cole, putting Port Huron ahead 6-5. In the top of the 8th, Phil Bickford was pitching for the Hubris with a 1 run lead. Bickford and the defense struggled, loading the bases with a base hit, error and a plunked batter with 0 outs with Devers next at the plate. Bickford struck out Devers with the bases loaded, recording the first out of the inning. In the bottom of the 1st, Jonathan Schoop singled, and Yadier Molina hit a home run to put Port Huron up 2-0 after 2 batters. In the 3rd inning, Schoop singled, Molina walked and Marcus Semien walked to load the bases with 0 outs. Anthony Rizzo singled, scoring Schoop.
