2016 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW Round 0 California Coneheads (89-73, #2 League Wildcard) vs. Brookfield Brouhaha (90-72, #1 League Wildcard) In a very competitive field this year, the Coneheads saw themselves as sellers at the trade deadline, trading starters Danny Duffy, Bartolo Colon, closer Kelvim Herrera and others in a look towards 2017. Then a funny thing happened. They kept winning -- and winning more. They couldn't stop winning even if they tried. Winning so much that they captured the #2 league wildcard on the last day of the season. Justin Turner hit .302 with 27 home runs, 84 runs scored and 105 RBI. DJ LeMahieu hit .330 with 91 runs scored. Paul Goldschmidt hit .272 with 22 home runs and 96 runs scored. Joc Pederson smacked 32 home runs with 86 RBI. Acquisition Ian Kennedy went 3-2 with a 3.91 ERA in 9 starts, and is the round 0 starter. Trevor Cahill finished with 15 saves and a 3.41 ERA. The Brouhaha led the Young division for much of the season, but a late season surge by the Park City Climbers saw Bookfield slip to the #1 league wildcard. Wilson Ramos was stellar at the catcher spot, hitting .339 with 20 home runs, 83 runs scored and 86 RBI. Kole Calhoun was a solid outfielder, hitting .275 with 23 home runs, 101 runs scored and 91 RBI. Eduardo Nunez stole 36 bases and drove in 74 runs, while Chris Davis smacked 35 home runs with 102 runs scored and 90 RBI. The starting pitching was solid this year. Round 0 starter Kyle Hendricks went 11-7 with a 3.20 ERA. Jim Johnson went 11-4 in relief with 8 saves and 2.91 ERA, while Matt Bush hoovered up most of the saves, nabbing 25 with a 3.43 ERA. Tony Watson was 7-0 in relief with a 1.97 ERA. In 9 regular season games, the Coneheads won the regular series 5 games to 4. Brookfield has home field advantage due to their higher seeding. Whoever wins this matchup will advance to round 1 of the playoffs. ******************************************************************* ROUND 0 PLAYOFF -- Coneheads (Kennedy) at Brouhaha (Hendricks). Things started off as a pitcher duel, with 1 hit between the two teams over 3 scoreless innings. In the top of the 4th, Justin Turner hit a leadoff triple, but was thrown out during the next at bat attempting to score on a passed ball. In the bottom of the 4th, the Brouhaha were the first to score when Kole Calhoun hit a 2 out double and scored on a base hit from Wilson Ramos. California tied it up at 1-each in the 5th with a Jarrett Parker solo home run. The Brouhaha put 2 runners on in the bottom of the 5th on singles from Eduardo Nunez and Travis Jankowski. After a double steal, Kyle Hendricks drove them both home with a single. 3-1 Brouhaha after 5. After trading single runs in the 6th innings, both starters were done, and it was now up to the relievers to decide the game. In the 7th inning, pinch hitter Scooter Gennett doubled and scored on a 2-out single from Turner. 4-3 Brouhaha. In the 8th inning, with Brouhaha setup man/closer Matt Bush on the mound, Robbie Grossman hit a leadoff single. With 1 out, Parker advanced Grossman to 3rd on a ground out. Mallex Smith was intentionally walked, and the Brouhaha brought on closer Jim Johnson to face pinch hitter Andrew Toles. Toles got a key hit, singling in Grossman to tie the game up. Paul Goldschmidt gave California the lead, singling in Smith to go ahead 5-4 after 7 1/2 innings of play. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Michael Lorenzen was pitching for the Coneheads with a 1-run lead. He plunked the first batter, Scott Schebler. With 1 out, pinch hitter Reymond Fuentes singled, moving Schebler to 3rd. Derek Law came on in relief to face Alcides Escobar. Escobar had the biggest at bat of his season, smacking a triple to score 2 runners and gave Brookfield the 6-5 lead. Yangervis Solarte singled, scoring Escobar from 3rd. 7-5 Brookfield heading into the top of the 9th. Brouhaha closer Jim Johnson was 3 outs away from advancing his team to the next round of the playoffs, holding a 2-run lead. First batter up, Justin Turner, doubled to put the tying run at the plate. Joc Pederson walked, putting 2 on with 0 outs. Grossman struck out. Aledmys Diaz singled, scoring Turner and moved Pederson to 3rd. 7-6 Brouhaha. Parker struck out to put 2 outs on the board. 2 outs, his team down by 1, Travis d'Arnaud was at the plate to face Johnson. A single would tie things up, anything more could move them ahead. But Johnson would win this matchup, getting d'Arnaud to ground out to 3rd to end the game. Brookfield wins a back and forth contest by the score of 7-6, and advance to the 1st round of the playoffs.
