NOTES: The 2014 CFOD regular season is complete. The Termites won their last 3 games and the Pitbulls lost their last 2 games, which enabled San Diego to capture the Ruth division pennant on the last day of the season. This is San Diego's first pennant since 1998. The Pig's Eye Pirates won their last 2 games to clinch the Koufax division title (their 3rd in 6 years) and the league's best record. The Angry Candy won the Mantle division, their 6th title in 13 years. The Moshers won the Young division pennant, their 3rd title in 8 years. The Cincinnati Rock enter the playoffs as the Mantle/Koufax wildcard (their 2nd straight playoff appearance), while the Paxtang Pitbulls are the Ruth/Young wildcard (their 3rd straight playoff appearance). The Lakeview Zeros and Mechan Syndicate finish in a tie for the #1 and #2 league wildcards, and in accordance with the new playoff rules, play a 1 game, winner takes all round 0 wildcard game to determine who advances to the 1st round of the playoffs. Mechan won the season series 5 games to 4, so they will host the round 0 playoff game. Here is the playoff bracket: Round 0: Mechan Syndicate (93-69, #1 league wildcard) (HFA) vs. Lakeview Zeros (93-69, #2 league wildcard). Round 1: Pig's Eye Pirates (98-64, Koufax division winner) (HFA) vs. Round 0 Winner Round 1: Angry Candy (96-66, Mantle division winner) (HFA) vs. Cincinnati Rock (96-66, MK Conf. Wildcard) Round 1: Seattle Moshers (84-78, Young division winner) (HFA) vs. Paxtang Pitbulls (93-69, RY Conf. Wildcard) Round 1: San Diego Termites (94-68, Ruth division winner) (HFA) vs. BYE The Mangos, who sported a fantastic 91 win season, fell 2 games short of the playoffs. As a consolation, they will end up drafting 6th overall behind the 95 loss club. In the 95 loss club this year are the Walruses, Climbers, Thunder, Sluggers, and Arthropods. This is how they will draft: #1 - Sluggers - 102 losses (Made playoffs in 2007) #2 - Climbers - 101 losses (Made playoffs in 2010) #3 - Arthropods - 109 losses (Made playoffs in 2012) #4 - Thunder - 102 losses (Made playoffs in 2012) #5 - Walruses - 95 losses (Made playoffs in 2012) A few new individual and team records were set this year. Dee Gordon of the Moshers set a new stolen bases record with 108, beating Kenny Lofton and Jose Reyes mark of 91. Jose Altuve of the Pirates set a new hitting streak record with 41 straight games with a high, breaking Lance Johnson's 18 year old record. Chris Davis set a new dubious record for most strikeouts, with 254 K's, "besting" Ryan Howard's old mark. In pitching, Jordan Zimmerman of the Angry Candy set a new record for ERA with 1.58, breaking Greg Maddux's 1992 record. His 7.6 runners per 9 innings was also the best ever, breaking Pedro Martinez's 2000 record. Phil Hughes was traded mid-season from the Thunder to the Pitbulls, but still set a record low for walks per 9 innings with a 0.4 rate, beating Carlos Silva's mark. On the team batting front, there was a sure sign that hitters have it tough these days, as the Arthropods set a new low-water mark in batting average with a paltry .224 rate, and the Park City Climbers set a new league worst in team on base average with a .286 rate. The Arthropods set a new league worst for hits with 1218, and the Brouhaha set a new futility mark for team strikeouts by whiffing 1561 times. In team pitching, there was a sure sign that pitching dominates these days, as the Angry Candy bested their own record for team ERA with a stellar 2.97 ERA. The Pirates pitching staff set a new K's mark, striking out an amazing 1467 batters. The Termites won the Ruth division pennant, and they did it without any starting pitching workhorses as they tied numerous other teams with 0 complete games. Thanks again for another great season! I will send out playoff information shortly.
