2014 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW ROUND 0 WILDCARD Mechan Syndiate (93-69, #1 League Wildcard) vs. Lakeview Zeros (93-69, #2 League Wildcard) In the new playoff format, league wildcards in the same conference face off in a winner takes all (or at least an appearance in round 1) matchup. The Syndicate won 93 games and finished 2nd in the Mantle division. Adam Eaton hit .333 with 17 triples, 81 runs, 81 RBI and 20 stolen bases. Justin Upton hit 36 home runs with 113 runs scored and 100 RBI, while Brett Gardner stole 27 bases and scored 104 runs. Buster Posey hit 23 home runs with 96 RBI and Troy Tulowitzki hit 25 home runs and drove in 63 runs in just 329 at bats. Adam LaRoche added 30 home runs and 82 RBI. Round 0 starter Zach Greinke won 18 games with a 2.99 ERA, and closer Fernando Abad had 13 saves and a 2.76 ERA. The Zeros won 93 games and finished 3rd in the Koufax division. Michael Brantley hit .329 with 27 home runs, 96 runs scored and 94 RBI. Matt Holliday hit 19 home runs with 95 runs scored and 83 RBI, while Freddie Freeman hit 18 home runs with 91 runs scored. Matt Carpenter added 89 runs scored, while Jason Heyward hit .299 with 77 runs scored, 74 RBI and 20 stolen bases. Round 0 starter Adam Wainwright had a masterful season, winning a league high 23 games and sported a 1.77 ERA. Closer Jeurys Familia racked up 25 saves as the team's primary closer. In 9 regular season games, the Syndicate won the season series 5 games to 4. Winning the tiebreaker allows the Syndicate to host the round 0 game on their own home turf. Whoever wins this game moves on to round 1. ******************************************************************* ROUND 0 MATCHUP -- Zeros (Wainwright) at Syndicate (Greinke). With the season on the line, each team trotted out their ace. Mechan's Zach Greinke ran into trouble early, putting himself into an 0-3 hole with a 3-run 1st inning blast from Freddie Freeman. The Syndicate scored their first run of the game in the 3rd when Greinke doubled in George Springer. The Zeros added to their lead in the 4th, when Freeman came through again, this time hitting a 2 out RBI single to extend Lakeview's lead to 4-1. Greinke was done for the day, only lasting 3 2/3 innings. The Syndicate scored another run in the 5th with a leadoff blast from Brett Lawrie, but Lakeview answered in the 6th with a solo shot of their own, this one from Carl Crawford. 5-2 Lakeview after 5 1/2 innings. With a 3 run lead, Lakeview ace Adam Wainwright found himself in trouble in the 6th. After Adam Eaton hit a leadoff double, Buster Posey went yard. 2-run blast, and the Zeros lead was cut to 1. Adam LaRoche made it back-to-back home runs, and suddenly the game was tied at 5, and Wainwright's day had ended. Neither ace was particularly effective today, and it would be up to the bullpens to decide which team advanced. The game was still tied at 5 in the top of the 9th. Drew Pomeranz was pitching for the Syndicate. Leadoff batter and mid-season acquisition Scott Van Slyke grounded out. Jimmy Rollins got the 1 out walk. Pinch hitter Kyle Blanks struck out to put 2 outs on the board with a runner on base. Up came mid-season acquisition Martin Prado. What would Prado do with the game tied, in the 9th inning with a season at stake? He would knock one over the fence. 2-run home run, and the Zeros were up 7-5 with 3 more outs to go. Ryan Cook started the bottom of the 9th for the Zeros with a 2-run lead and 3 outs to victory. The first batter he faced was Oswaldo Arcia, who lined a single to the outfield. Cook was pulled in favor of James Russell. The next batter, pinch hitter Mookie Betts, struck out. Brett Gardner popped out. 2 outs, runner on base, and Adam Eaton at the plate. Eaton could tie it up with one swing, but it was not to be. On home turf with the Syndicate's season on the line, Eaton struck out to end the game. Lakeview wins a closely fought slugfest 7-5.
