2007 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW Somerville Sluggers (99-63, #1 League Wildcard) vs. Arlington Arthropods (92-70), #2 League Wildcard) The Sluggers lived up to their namesake in 2007, featuring quite a few sluggers in their lineup. Magglio Ordonez hit .367, with a .599 slugging average, 59 doubles, 31 home runs, 129 runs scored and 142 RBI. Grady Sizemore hit .314 with a .403 on base average, 27 home runs, 137 runs scored and 35 stolen bases. Carlos Pena bashed 49 home runs with a .611 slugging average, 125 runs scored and 134 RBI. Adrian Beltre hit 28 homers with 113 RBI. Roy Halladay had an ace season, going 22-5 with a 3.80 ERA. Closer duties were split between Damasco Marte and Manny Delcarmen, who combined for 32 saves. The Arthropods were powered to the playoffs behind the big bat of Prince Fielder. Fielder hit .302, with a .636 slugging average, 54 home runs, 124 runs scored and 146 RBI. He even stole 11 bases! Curtis Granderson set a new league tripels record with 24, while also hitting .332, stealing 36 bases and scoring 107 runs. SS Carlos Reyes scored 95 runs with 52 stolen bases. And of course, one cannot forget Manny Ramirez, who hit .288 with a .476 slugging average, 22 home runs and 83 RBI. John Smoltz, and Rich Hill were innings eaters, winning 12-13 games each. Closer Rafael Betancourt was an elite closer in 2007, saving 34 games with a 1.82 ERA. The Sluggers narrowly won the season series with the Arthropods 5 games to 4. In the second inning, Ryna Zimmerman doubled in a run to give Arlington a 1-0 lead. In the 4th, with runners at first and third, Carlos Pena singled, tying the game up at 1. Smoltz would finish the game pitching 6 innings and allowing only 1 run. The game was still tied at 1 in the bottom of the 8th. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th, Carlos Pena singled again, driving in the go-ahead run. Somerville lead, 2 runs to 1. Damasco Marte closed out the 9th inning, retiring the Arthropods in order.
