2003 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW Seattle Moshers (88-74, #2 league wildcard) vs. Topeka MooseDogs (91-71, #1 league wildcard) Last year Seattle cruised their way to a pennant and advanced to the CFOD world series. This year the road to the playoffs was much harder, only qualifying for the playoffs on the last day of the season. Their offense was in top gear this year, posting the 4th best team OPS in the league. The double play combination of Edgar Renteria (134 runs scored, .384 OBA, 39 stolen bases) and Michael Young (.491 slugging, 97 runs scored, 101 RBI) was one of the best in the league. OF Magglio Ordonez finished with 29 homers and 120 RBI, while Tim Salmon scored triple digits in runs and RBI. In 474 at bats, David Ortiz his 26 homers with a .527 slugging average and 97 RBI. Closer Keith Foulke was effective again this year, saving 32 games with a 1.90 ERA. Other than Foulke, the pitching was pretty mediocre, posting a 4.69 ERA, the highest of any team with a winning record. Jarrod Washburn went 15-9 with a 4.33, while CC Sabathia was 13-7 with a 5.28 ERA. 2003 was a shining achievement for the Topeka MooseDogs. The MooseDogs were a perennial doormat in the league, changing owners frequently and perpetually drifting. Current management has provided stability and has injected quite a bit of talent into the team. Slugger Aubrey Huff had a monster year, slugging .563 with 35 homers, 114 runs scored and 112 RBI. Dmitri Young hit 29 homers with triple digits in runs and RBI. Catcher Jason Kendall rebounded with a good year, posting a .377 on base average with 101 runs scored. Richie Sexson was traded in the off-season, and provided Topeka with a lot of depth in Travis Hafner (.558 slugging, 17 homers in 326 AB), Mark Teixeira (.454 slugging, 19 homers, 72 RBI in 491 at bats) and Konerko (.425 sluggin, 17 runs & 17 RBI in 153 at bats). Closer Paul Quantrill saved 28 games with a 1.90 ERA. Derek Lowe and Joel Pineiro tied for team highs in wins with 17 wins each. Starters Mike Hampton and Kyle Lohse won 11 games each. In 9 regular season games, the MooseDogs won the series 6-3. Topeka has home field advantage. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Moshers (Washburn) at MooseDogs (Hampton). Opening game of the 2003 CFOD post-season.
