2002 CFOD PLAYOFF PREVIEW Paxtang Pitbulls (85-77, RY Conf Wildcard) vs. Seattle Moshers (97-65, Young division winners) Ever since the drafts that brought on Alex Rodriguez, Carlos Delgado and Brian Giles, the Pitbulls have always been contenders. Not always playoff-bound, but still competitive. The Pitbulls finished in a 3-way tie for the last 2 wildcard spots, and by virtue of a tie-breaker they entered the 2002 playoffs as the Ruth-Young conference wildcard. Their 256 homers easily led the league. Alex Rodriguez hit 49 homers with 123 RBI's. Brian Giles hit 42 homers with 100+ runs and RBI's. Carlos Delgado hit 35 homers with 104 runs scored. Ellis Burks had a fairly full season for once, and responded with 42 homers and 103 runs driven in. Veteran Benito Santiago excelled at the catcher position, hitting 24 homers with 80 runs driven in. Mark Mulder had an ace season, going 17-10 with a 3.14 ERA. Javier Vazquez won 14 games. Closer Armando Benitez saved 29 games. The Seattle Moshers had not been playoff bound in quite some time. But in 2002, it all came together with a Young division pennant. Their pitching was very consistent this year. Ace Greg Maddux finished 16-7 with a 2.91 ERA, while Jarrod Washburn was 14-8 with a 3.47 ERA. Closer Keith Foulke blew away the competition, saving a league high 44 games with a 2.61 ERA. The team was consistent at the plate. Their .280 batting average was tops in the league. Magglio Ordonez was the center of the lineup, hitting 34 homers with 117 runs scored and 112 RBI's. Tim Salmon added 26 homers, 106 runs scored and 106 RBI's scored. Mark Kotsay finally had his breakout year, hitting .310 with 21 homers, 22 steals and 114 runs scored. Shortstop Edgar Renteria had 30 steals and 94 runs scored. The first base platoon of David Ortiz and Travis Lee combined for 93 RBI's and 105 runs scored. Seattle has home field advantage due to their pennant winning status, and won the season series 5 games to 4. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Pitbulls (Mulder) at Moshers (Maddux). The Pitbulls got Maddux in trouble early and often in game one. In the top of the first, Marlon Anderson singled and Alex Rodriguez walked. Brian Giles singled, and Anderson went for home. The ball was thrown home for the out, but catcher Damian Miller dropped the ball, leaving Anderson safe and the game 1-0 in Paxtang's favor. In the 3rd inning, Ellis Burks, Rodriguez and Giles singled to load the bases with 1 out. But Delgado struck out and Robert Fick grounded out to Koskie to leave the game 1-0. In the top of the 4th inning, Benito Santiago, Matt Williams and Marlon Anderson singled to load the bases with 1 out. Ellis Burks hit a sacrifice fly, making it 2-0 Pitbulls. Maddux would last just 4 2/3 innings. In the 5th, the Moshers made their comeback. Koskie singled, and John Valentine walked. Mark Kotsay hit a key double, driving both runners home and tying the game at 2. Magglio Ordonez gave Seattle the lead in the same inning with an RBI double. 3-2 Moshers. Alex Rodriguez tied the game in the 7th with a solo home run. 3-3. Mulder started the 7th by plunking Kotsay, awarding him first base. Travis Lee singled to put runners at first and second. Ordonez slapped a base hit, and Kotsay and Lee tried to go for extra bases. Kotsay motored around 3rd and Lee around 2nd. Kotsay would score, but Lee was thrown out at 3rd. 4-3 Moshers. Keith Foulke pitched the top of the 9th, having already thrown 2/3 of an inning in the 8th. Alex Rodriguez struck out. So did Brian Giles. Carlos Delgado hit a 2 out single. The tying run was at first, and the winning run, Robert Fick was at the plate. Fick singled, putting two runners on. At bat was Benito Santiago. But the Pitbull bats would sing no more today. Santiago lined out to Michael Young at 2nd. Seattle edges Paxtang by a score of 4-3. The Pitbulls scored first in this game four contest, when Benito Santiago walked, moved to 3rd on a Matt Williams single, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rodrigo Lopez. The Moshers took the lead in the 4th inning on a 2 RBI single by Koskie. In the bottom of the 6th inning, Alex Rodiguez hit a solo shot off Byrd to tie things up at 2. In the same inning, Brian Giles singled, moved to 2nd on a balk, and scored when Carlos Delgado single. 3-2, Paxtang takes the league. The Moshers would have a shot at winning the game in the 9th. Jayson Durocher was on the mound for Paxtang. Tim Salmon walked with 0 outs, and was replaced by pinch runner Rob Mackowiak. Mackowiak proceeded to steal 2nd. David Ortiz struck out for out #1. Ray Durham, representing the go-ahead run, walked. Corey Koskie walked to load the bases with 1 out. Durocher remained in the game to face pinch hitter Brent Butler. A single would tie the game, at least. A sacrifice fly, even. So what happens? Butler hit into a game ending double play. Paxtang wins game 4 by a score of 3 to 2, and tie up the series. If the Moshers won today, they would advance to the RY conference finals. But they'd be sending Jarrod Washburn to the mound, who didn't even make it out of the 1st inning in game one. The Moshers were the first team to put runs on the board in the 4th inning. Tim Salmon hit a grounder to Coomer, who bobbled it, allowing Salmon to reach 1st on an error. Magglio Ordonez rubbed salt in the wounds, hitting a 2-run home run. 2-0 Moshers after 4. Washburn was on the roll, throwing 5 shutout innings, before a fateful 6th inning. In the 6th, Ellis Burks walked and moved to 3rd on a Fick double. Carlos Delgado singled to drive in a run. 2-1 Seattle. Benito Santiago singled to drive in a run. 2-2 ballgame. Marlon Anderson grounded out, advancing the runners to 2nd & 3rd. And that was the 1st out of the inning. Ron Coomer singled, driving in Delgado. Santiago tried to score from 2nd, but was thrown out. 2 outs, and the Pitbulls have the 3-2 lead. Javier Vazquez hit an RBI double to make it 4-2. Washburn lasted 6 innings this time, but had 4 earned runs tagged to him. The Pitbulls made it 6-2 in the 7th when Delgado hit a 2-run home run off of Scott Stewart. For added effect, they scored 5 more times in the 9th inning to make it an unbeatable 11-2 contest. And that's how the game would end. Paxtang blows out Seattle, and forces a decisive game 7. This was it. After today's game, one team's season ends, and the other moves to the RY conference finals. Both pitchers had their stuff going on, throwing shutouts through 5 innings. In the bottom of the 6th, Tim Salmon hit a double to bring Ray Durham to the plate. Durham hit a ball past Giles, scoring Salmon, and sending Durham past 2nd .. past 3rd .. and scoring for an inside the park home run. 2-0 Seattle. With 2 outs, Toby Hall and Sabathia singled, and Hall scored on a Mark Kotsay single to make it 3-0 Moshers. With 2 outs in the top of the 7th inning, Shane Halter hit a double. A single by Brian Giles cut the lead to 2. In the bottom of the inning, Magglio Ordonez hit a ground rule double with 0 outs. Ordonez moved to 3rd on a flyout by Tim Salmon, and scored on a sacrifice fly by David Ortiz. 4-1 Seattle. Ray Durham walked and scored on a Corey Koskie double. 5-1 Seattle. In the bottom of the 9th inning, Danny Graves was on the mound for Seattle with a 4 run lead. Just 3 more outs and Seattle was on their way to the conference finals. First batter up, Benito Santiago, hit a groundout. Pinch hitter Frank Catalanotto struck out. Just 1 out remained in Paxtang's season if they didn't start a rally. At the plate was Damian Jackson. Jackson set the stage for a comeback, hitting a 2 out single. The burden of responsibility now shifted to pinch hitter Marvin Benard.
