2002 CFOD PLAYOFFS PREVIEW Cincinnati Rock (96-66, Koufax division winners) vs. San Francisco Shriners (90-72, MK Conf wildcard) Cincinnati has been one of the elite teams of the MK conference the past 4 years, with 4 pennants, 2 world series appearances and 1 CFOD championship in that span. In 2002, the Rock featured not one, not two, but three ace starters. Curt Schilling finished the year 19-8 with a 2.40 ERA, while Roy Oswalt went 19-9 with a 3.17 ERA, and Bartolo Colon had a team high 21-12 record with a 3.79 ERA. All three starters were ironmen, starting at least 40 games with 260+ innings pitched. Felix Rodriguez and Trevor Hoffman combined for 37 saves. Offense was a team affair, uniform quality throughout the lineup. The double-play combination of SS David Eckstein and 2B Junior Spivey combined for 223 runs and 38 stolen bases. Catcher Jorge Posada hit .275 with 26 homers, 94 runs scored and 88 RBI, while Brad Wilkerson drove in 95 runs. The Shriners have been a changed team ever since they acquired Sammy Sosa back in 1997. They've never had a losing record since then, and their 90 win season of 2002 is a new team record. The Shriners had the best record in the league at the halfway mark, and hosted the all-star game this year. All this was a bit strange, because Sammy had a bit of an off-year, Sammy-wise. Sosa only hit .241, but had 40 home runs, 99 runs scored and 99 RBI (a team high). Center fielder Mike Cameron hit only .233, but with 43 stolen bases and 28 home runs, scored 110 runs. Jose Hernandez hit 26 homres with 75 RBI, while outfielder Cliff Floyd hit .294 with 19 homers, 73 runs scored and 89 RBI. Starter Brian Lawrence made the all-star team, and finished the season 13-10 with a 3.66 ERA. Cory Lidle put in a 17-7 season with a 3.55 ERA. All-star closer Chad Bradford had 28 saves with a 3.05 ERA. Cincinnati won the season series 5 games to 4, and has home field advantage. ******************************************************************* GAME ONE -- Shriners (Padilla) at Rock (Schilling). There were some darn fine performances in game one. Curt Schilling got into trouble in the 1st, when Mark McLemore hit a leadoff single and advanced to 3rd on a Bill Mueller single. But, the stud that he is, Schilling hunkered down and struck out Cliff Floyd, Sammy Sosa and Kevin Millar 1-2-3 to get out of the inning unscathed. The top of the third inning started off a lot like the top of the first. Mark McLemore had a 0 out single, and moved to 3rd on a Bill Mueller single. Only this time, Cliff Floyd hit a 2-strike pitch deep. Not deep enough to go over the wall, but deep enough for a sacrifice fly. 1-0 Shriners. The Rock tied it up in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot by Eli Marrero. 1-1 after 3. Vicente Padilla and Curt Schilling continued their stellar performances for the next several innings. It was only in the 8th inning, when Padilla was pulled in favor of reliever Mark Guthrie, that the Shriners ran into trouble. With Guthrie on the mound, Junior Spivey walked, and pinch hitter Ramon Martinez singled with 0 out. Randall Simon grounded out, moving runners to 2nd & 3rd. A single or deep flyout would score a run and give Cincinnati the lead. Up to the plate was Ken Griffey Jr. Well, maybe not. The one time all-CFOD outfielder was pulled in favor of pinch hitter Josh Bard, who promptly struck out to put 2 outs on the board. Shriner reliever Peter Munro was sent to the mound to face catcher Jorge Posada. Posada hit a dribbler in front of the plate, and Munro picked it up and fired it to first to get the final out. No runs scored, and it was still 1-1 after 8 innings. Trevor Hoffman started the 9th for the Rock, after Curt Schilling's 13 K performance. Kevin Millar greeted Hoffman with a 0 out double. Jose Hernandez struck out (his 3rd of the day) for the first out. Eric Owens grounded out, putting another out on the board but advanced Millar to 3rd. Up to bat was pinch hitter Brian Roberts. A single would give the Shriners the go ahead run, but Roberts ended the 9th with a strikeout. Peter Munro remained on the mound in the 9th. 1-1 tie ballgame. The Shriners would have to keep the inning scoreless to put the game into extra innings. David Eckstein and late inning substitute Geoff Jenkins each singled with 0 outs. The next batter, Eli Marrero, crushed a pitch deep, but not deep enough as it fell into Sosa's glove. David Eckstein moved to third on the flyout. 1-1 game, 1 out. Junior Spivey was issued the intentional walk to load the bases. The Shriners were planning on a big fielding play to end the inning. Ricardo Rincon came on to face Ramon Martinez. A single or deep flyout would win it for Cincinnati. Martinez grounded one past McLemore. Base hit. Eckstein scored from third to the delight of the home crowd. Cincinnati wins a great game one, 2 to 1. Brian Lawrence was an all-star pitcher this year, but that didn't confront the Rock. In the bottom of the 1st, Junior Spivey got a 1 out base hit. Geoff Jenkins was issued a 2 out walk. Randall Simon drove them both home with a 2 RBI double. Jorge Posada was issued an intentional walk to bring on Joe Randa. Didn't help. Randa singled, driving in a run. The next batter, David Eckstein, singled as well, making it 4-0 Cincinnati after 1. The Rock would maintain a comfortable lead for the rest of the game, including another 4 run rally in the 7th. Cincinnati wins game 2 by a score of 9-1. The Shriners jumped to an early lead in this game four contest, with a lead-off home run from Mike Cameron. But then things turned into a slugfest. The Rock traded 2 runs in the 3rd to give San Francisco a 3-2 lead. Then, in the 5th, the Rock piled on 3 runs to take a 5-3 lead. San Francisco cut it to 1 with a run in the 5th. Down 3-1, San Francisco would depend on their #1 starter to prolong the series, but they'd have to do it against Curt Schilling. Padillia held his ground, but so did Schilling. Through 5 innings, there was a combined 2 hits and no runs, both hits allowed by Schilling. By the 7th, only 4 total hits were given up in the game, with the score still tied at 0. In the top of the 8th, Jeremy Giambi was issued a 2-out walk. Randall Simon broke the scoring deadlock with a 2 run shot off Padilla. 2-0 Rock. Munro came on in relief. Ken Griffey Jr singled, and scored on a Jorge Posada double. Posada scored on a Joe Randa single. Cincinati pounded out 4 runs in the 8th to take a 4-0 lead. Schilling continued his ace ways, throwing 8 shutout innings, giving up 3 hits and struck out 10. In the bottom of the 9th, BJ Ryan came on to close out the game. 3 more outs and Cincinnati was going to the MK conference finals. Tony Graffanino grounded out. Bill Mueller grounded out to Eckstein. Just 1 out remained. Cliff Floyd was at bat, and Sammy Sosa was in the warm-up circle. But Sammy would be done for 2002. Floyd struck out, ending the game. Cincinnati wins game 4 by a score of 4-0, wins the series 4 games to 1, and advances to the MK conference finals.
